Clemson baseball wins 40th game by sweeping Boston College in regular-season finale

Clemson baseball sweeps Boston College to close out regular season with 40th victory.

Aidan Knaak struck out a career-high 11 batters in his final tune-up before postseason play, and No. 4 Clemson scored 10 runs in the final four innings Saturday to win its regular-season finale, 10-0, over Boston College in eight innings at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

The Tigers earned their 40th win in their regular-season finale to finish the season 40-13 overall and 20-10 in the ACC.

It took a while for the Tigers’ bats to get going. After being shut out through four innings, Clemson finally broke through in the fifth by plating two runs courtesy of small ball.

Nolan Nawrocki was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, then stole second and advanced to third on an error. Nawrocki scored the game’s first run on a wild pitch from Boston College starter Michael Farinelli.

Later that inning, Blake Wright drove in a run with an RBI sacrifice fly to center for a 2-0 lead. Wright was one of 12 Clemson seniors honored in an on-field ceremony before the game as part of the team’s Senior Day festivities.

Jacob Jarrell sent an RBI single up the middle to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead in the sixth off Eagles reliever Kyle Kipp. Nawrocki followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to score Tristan Bissetta to make it 4-0.

On Travis Lane’s first pitch of the seventh, Wright hit his team-best 21st home run and 70th RBI for a 5-0 lead. The Tigers tacked on two more runs that inning. Bissetta added an RBI single and Jimmy Obertop scored on a double play for a 7-0 lead.

In the eighth, Clemson loaded the bases on three consecutive walks from reliever Aidan Crowley to start the inning. Cam Cannarella then lined a two-run single to right off Beck Milner that made it 9-0.

Clemson coach Erik Bakich came out of the dugout to announce a pinch-runner for Wright, who received a standing ovation from the home crowd and a warm greeting from everyone on the Tigers’ bench. Teammates met Wright before he reached the dugout steps for a round of handshakes and high-fives.

After an intentional walk to Bissetta loaded the bases, Jarrell then drew a walk on four pitches to score the winning run for his 22nd RBI of the season. It was the Tigers’ sixth run-rule victory of the year.

Clemson totaled eight hits in the victory with Wright (2-for-2), Cannarella (2-5) and Bissetta (2-4) picking up two hits apiece. Wright reached base four times, finishing with two hits and two walks. Bissetta reached base three times.

On the mound, Knaak (5-1) bounced back to earn his fifth victory in one of his most dominant outings of the year.

Despite scattering eight hits over six innings, the freshman right-hander overwhelmed Eagles hitters early by striking out seven of the first 10 batters he faced.

Knaak ended his day by striking out Vince Cimini to end the sixth inning. He threw 81 pitches (62 strikes) over six scoreless frames. Knaak did not allow a walk. His 11 strikeouts broke his previous high of 10 (on March 30 at Miami and April 14 vs. NC State).

Lucas Mahlstedt worked two scoreless innings in relief of Knaak.

Farinelli (0-6) suffered the loss for Boston College, which ended its season 22-31 overall and 8-22 in conference play.

The Tigers, ranked seventh in the USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll and fourth in D1Baseball’s Top 25, will be the No. 2 seed in next week’s ACC Tournament at Truist Field in Charlotte. North Carolina earned the No. 1 seed as the regular-season conference champion.

How to Watch/Stream/Listen: Clemson vs. Boston College

How Clemson fans can watch, stream, and listen to Saturday’s basketball game against Boston College.

No. 21 Clemson has dropped three straight games since ACC play resumed on January 3. The Tigers are in desperate need of a win and hope to stop the bleeding Saturday against Boston College at Littlejohn Coliseum.

Clemson (11-4 overall, 1-3 conference) entered the new year on a roll with the best overall record of any ACC school after winning 11 of its first 12 games.

It’s been all downhill since then, especially on defense.

A second-half blowout in Miami, where the Tigers surrendered 60 points over the final 20 minutes, followed by a loss to No. 7 North Carolina and a double-digit blowout at Virginia Tech on Wednesday night have left Clemson reeling — and coach Brad Brownell searching for answers.

After the Tigers’ anemic performance against Virginia Tech, Brownell admitted that he was losing patience with his team’s performances of late.

“We have to play better,” Brownell said. “We have to play better basketball on both ends. We’re not thinking about what we want to get done and executing it. We’re making way, way too many mistakes.”

For their part, Boston College (10-5 overall, 1-3 conference) is led by senior forward Quinten Post’s 16.9 points per game average and 7.7 rebounds per game. Guard Claudell Harris is second, averaging 15.6 points per game.

The Eagles are coming off a 69-59 loss at Syracuse earlier this week.

“We’ve had a hard stretch here. This is another quick turnaround with Boston College. They’re playing very well and playing really hard. It’s going to be a great test for us,” Brownell said.

Saturday’s game will be the 30th meeting all-time between Clemson and Boston College. The Tigers lead the all-time series 20-9.

Here’s a look at how and where Clemson fans can watch, listen, and stream Saturday’s game.

‘Heart’ of Clemson’s offense shines through at Boston College

One of the biggest differences in Clemson’s offense this season compared to the last is the unit’s ability to respond to adversity.

After an interception and four consecutive punts following a successful opening drive, Clemson’s offense finally got the momentum it needed right before halftime in the team’s 31-3 win over Boston College in Chestnut Hill on Saturday.

An Antonio Williams 20-yard punt return helped set up a Will Shipley one-yard score, which enabled Clemson to take a 10-3 lead over the Eagles headed into the break. Boston College’s defense clearly frustrated Clemson’s offense in the game’s first 30 minutes, but Brandon Streeter acknowledged that his unit has been able to respond time and time again this season.

“We felt like they did a good job of stopping the run early on,” Clemson’s offensive coordinator said postgame. “We felt like if we had a little bit of tempo, which we showed in that drive, it helped get our guys going a little bit more too. We got a little momentum going with that drive, especially in the run game, which we really needed to get done.”

On that final drive in question, Clemson drove the ball down the field in seven plays (six rushes) to find paydirt for the first time Saturday.

“That one drive was big for us,” Streeter continued. “We talk about the middle-eight, the last four minutes in the second quarter and the first four minutes in the third quarter. We’re doing a really good job in those scenarios.

Last week, in Clemson’s 30-20 win over NC State, the Tigers surged to a victory thanks to a 14-7 advantage in the “Middle Eight.” On Saturday, Clemson outscored Boston College, 14-0, in the Middle Eight and is now 60-2 since 2015 when outscoring opponents in that window.

The Tigers would never relinquish that lead, as they scored 21 unanswered points in the second half behind three D.J. Uiagalelei passing touchdowns.

“I think it just shows the heart,” Uiagalelei said postgame regarding the offense’s resolve. “I think it shows the heart of the coaches, the staff we have here, Coach Streeter and all the other position coaches. I think that it shows toughness in our players on offense…I think it shows the resilience we have…All the guys on offense, we all trust each other. No one’s pointing fingers on the sideline. No one’s complaining. Everyone’s just out there wanting to compete.”

No. 5 Clemson vs. Boston College: Offensive and Defensive Players of the Game

Check out Clemson WIre’s Players of the Game following the Tigers 31-3 win over Boston College.

Each week Clemson Wire will choose an offensive and defensive Player of the Game following each of the Tigers matchups this season.

In their latest win over a fellow ACC opponent in Boston College, the Tigers offense seemed to come alive in the second half following a less than stellar first half of play that led to Clemson only leading by one score through two quarters.

Despite a slow start, the Tigers pulled away for the eventual 28-point victory over the Eagles.

On the defensive side, Wes Goodwin’s defense showed incredible grit in what could arguably have been their best performance thus far at Boston College.

Here are Clemson Wire’s picks for this week’s offensive and defensive Players of the Game.

Box Score Breakdown: Clemson’s stat leaders from road win over Boston College

Check out the stat leaders from Clemson’s latest win over Boston College.

No. 5 Clemson remains undefeated after another ACC matchup and win on the road at Boston College on Saturday.

In the Tigers 31-3 win over the Eagles, quarterback DJ Uiagalelei put together another impressive performance at the helm, completing 18-for-32 passes (roughly 56%) for 220 yards and three touchdowns.

Uiagalelei led Clemson on the ground for the second straight week, garnering 12 carries for 36 yards.

En route to the win, Uiagalelei connected with five different receivers for at least two receptions and 20 yards.

Clemson handles Boston College for a win on the road

Clemson handles business against Boston College on the road.

Dabo Swinney and the Tigers hit the road to take on Boston College at Alumni Stadium Saturday night, taking home a 31 to 3 win behind a stellar defensive performance.

Clemson came out of the gates scoring three points on the first drive of the game, but the first half ended up being a slow one for the offense. The only other points they scored in the first half were on a Will Shipley one-yard touchdown on the last drive of the half.

DJ Uiagalelei and the offense picked things up in the second half, scoring 21 points while looking like a far better team. Uiagalelei ended the game, completing 18 of 32 passes for 220 yards and three touchdowns while having a great night on the ground as well. The junior quarterback took 12 carries for 69 yards.

The Tigers’ defense once again made their opponent one-dimensional, allowing just 34 yards on 30 carries, with Boston College averaging just 1.1 yards per carry. It was a dominant performance from Wes Goodwin’s defense, as they also added four sacks and an impressive 11 tackles for loss.

Clemson’s next game will be Saturday, October 15th, at 7:30, when the Tigers head to Tallahassee to take on Florida State.

Spector extends Clemson’s lead to 31-3 over Eagles

Clemson extended its lead for good thanks to a Brannon Spector touchdown reception for 13 yards.

Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei connected with his third receiver of the night in Brannon Spector for the fourth touchdown drive of the night.

It all came down to six plays in the fourth quarter where Uiagalelei targeted Spector three separate times, the third being for a 13-yard trip to the end zone.

Clemson came away with its third passing touchdown of the night in six plays for 88 yards in 2:12.

Clemson moves past Boston College with dominant second half

It was another tale of two halves for a Clemson team that shut out Boston College in the second half of Saturday’s 31-3 at Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill.

Clinging onto a touchdown lead at the half, Clemson came out of the gate needing to put the game out of reach. Boston College played with a lot of pride in its annual Red Bandana Game, but a one-score game was too close for comfort for Dabo Swinney’s team.

Clemson looked like it had turned back the clock to 2021 in the first half.

It took less than four minutes into the second half for Clemson to find that offensive mojo that’s carried the Tigers to five straight wins heading into Saturday’s contest. Two explosive plays, including a D.J. Uiagalelei 38-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Ngata, helped Clemson extend its lead early in the second half.

In the game’s first 30 minutes, Uiaglelei went 10-of-18 with 80 passing yards, including going 0-for-4 with an interception on passes of 10-plus yards down the field. That, obviously, changed in a hurry

Uiagalelei later connected with Beaux Collins for a 10-yard touchdown to put Clemson up three scores. He would later find Brannon Spector for a 13-yard touchdown to put the game out of reach for good.

After a slow start, Clemson’s starting quarterback finished 18-of-32 for 223 passing yards with three touchdowns and an interception. He also added 69 rushing yards on 12 carries, while Phil Mafah and Will Shipley combined for 69 yards of their own with a touchdown

As for the Clemson defense, it certainly bent at times but never broke.

The Eagles were unable to take advantage of some crucial opportunities. Connor Lytton missed a 35-yard chip shot in the first quarter and then later had his third field goal attempt of the evening blocked by Etinosa Reuben.

Phil Jurkovec and the Eagles also turned the ball over on downs during a critical second-quarter scoring drive. Jurkovec completed 12-of-24 passes for 135 yards in the first half but completed just 7 passes for 53 yards the rest of the way.

He finished the game 19-of-40 passing for 188 yards.

After eight first-half quarterback hits, Clemson was finally able to bring Jurkovec to the ground in the third quarter. Tré Williams wrapped up the Eagles’ senior quarterback for the team’s first sack of the night.

He was later chased down by Xavier Thomas, who recorded a sack in his first game of the season. Thomas had previously been out eight weeks and missed Clemson’s first five games with a broken right foot.

On the night, Boston College had 354 yards of total offense, but the Eagles rushing attack was snuffed out by the nation’s No. 2 rushing defense. Boston College was held to just 34 rushing yards on 30 attempts.

Clemson was outgained 168-131 yards in the first half. The Tigers answered the bell and outgained Boston College 233-86.

Uiagalelei finds Collins to extend Clemson’s lead

DJ Uiagalelei finds Beaux Collins to extend Clemson’s lead

Clemson extended their lead on the road Saturday night against Boston College as starting quarterback DJ Uiagalelei found wide receiver Beaux Collins in the back of the end zone for six.

It has been a much smoother second half for Swinney, and the Tigers, as the offense has moved much more efficiently. It was an eight-play, 72-yard drive for the Tigers’ offense.

Uiagalelei’s touchdown pass to Collins was a ten-yard throw and his second passing touchdown of the game. The Tigers now lead the Golden Eagles 24-3 in the fourth quarter.

This Clemson defense will look to continue to keep Boston College out of the red zone.

Uiagalelei-Ngata connection puts Clemson up 17-3

Clemson now leads Boston College 17-3 in the third quarter thanks to Ngata’s 38 yard touchdown reception.

After a sluggish start in the first half of play versus Boston College, Clemson came in hot to start the second half, putting together a quick trip to the end zone for the 17-3 lead.

In the first drive of the third quarter, the Tigers got it done with a 38-yard connection between quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei and wide receiver Joseph Ngata to extend Clemson’s lead to 14.

Clemson made its second trip of the night to end zone in five plays for 73 yards in just under two minutes of play.
