How far did Clemson fall in new USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll after OT loss to Memphis?

Clemson fell several spots in this week’s coaches poll.

The Clemson Tigers’ overtime loss to the Memphis Tigers was enough to drop Brad Brownell’s team out of the Week 7 USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll, released Monday.

Clemson (9-2) fell 10 spots from No. 16 to land one spot outside of the poll. The Tigers garnered the most votes (87) for Top 25 consideration.  Memphis (8-2) moved into the rankings at No. 22 following their 87-82 win at Littlejohn Coliseum on Saturday.

Clemson faces the South Carolina Gamecocks (7-3) in Columbia Tuesday. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. ET. The game can be seen on SEC Network. After that, the Tigers return to ACC play on Saturday when they host Wake Forest at 2 p.m. ET at Littlejohn (ESPN).

Tennessee (10-0 overall) remained No. 1 after a thrilling buzzer-beater win at Illinois over the weekend. Auburn (9-1) stayed at No. 2 for the third straight week, followed by Iowa State (9-1) at No. 3. The Kentucky Wildcats (10-1) moved up to No. 4 with Cooper Flagg and the Duke Blue Devils (8-2) at No. 5.

Duke was the only ACC team ranked in this week’s Top 25.

Clemson QB is Austin native, but spurned his hometime Longhorns in 2021

Clemson QB Cade Klubnik is a former 5-star from Austin Westlake. Why didn’t he stay home to play for the Texas Longhorns?

Cade Klubnik has been the Clemson Starting QB for two full years. He’s passed for almost 7,000 yards with the Tigers. But why did the 5-star Westlake graduate head east to South Carolina and not stay home to play for Texas?

Back when Klubnik was going through his recruiting cycle, the UT staff was recruiting him hard. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian was surprised when the Texas State Champion picked Clemson.

“Big fan of Cade,” Sarkisian said. “We recruited him hard. Obviously, local kid. Really possesses a great deal of competitive spirit, and you could see that when he was in high school at Westlake.”

But the son of two former Aggies had his eyes on Dabo Swinney. Klubnik’s family says he wanted to play for Dabo since his sophomore year in High School. Sark adds, “Thought we were the hometown team, and he had always had a dream of going to Clemson.”
But while Klubnik wanted Clemson, Clemson didn’t necessarily want him. Dabo Swinney had his eyes on another 5-star QB, Ty Simpson out of Tennessee. Dabo made it clear to Klubnik there would only be a scholarship for him if Simpson chose to go elsewhere.
In the meantime, Texas A&M and Texas were trying to land Klubnik themselves, both Klubnik described as “dream schools.” The Aggies decided to move on and signed Conner Weigman (who just announced he’s transferring to Houston).
In early February, Texas tried to ramp up the pressure. According to ESPN, Klubnik got an anonymous text from someone at Texas letting him know that Maalik Murphy was scheduled to visit campus and likely to commit. If he wanted to go to Texas, now was the time to commit.
Klubnik waited and the Longhorns did get that commitment from Murphy on Feb. 13 as Sark wasn’t taking any chances in 2021 as he tried to put together his first UT recruiting class. “He let that window close on both (schools) because he wanted to play at Clemson,” his father, Tod Klubnik, told ESPN.
Klubnik decided to wait on Clemson, but he didn’t have to wait long. On Feb. 26, 2021, Simpson picked Alabama. Clemson offered Klubnik a scholarship that same day. Less than a week later, Klubnik committed to the Tigers.
Sark is happy it all worked out for the junior QB and thinks its cool he’s coming home to Austin for the playoff game. “For him, I think, what a cool story of getting into the College Football Playoff and the first-round game is right here back in Austin, back home for him. A lot of really cool storylines of this ballgame, and that’s definitely one of them.”

Clemson draft prospects for Packers fans to watch in the CFP

Clemson draft prospects for Packers fans to watch in the College Football Playoff.

Since taking over as the Green Bay Packers general manager, Brian Gutekunst has spent six draft picks on prospects who competed in the College Football Playoff that year, with the most recent picks being Devonte Wyatt and Quay Walker in 2022.

With the expansion to 12 teams this year, that number will likely increase after the 2025 NFL Draft.

Over the next few days, we will examine prospects on all 12 playoff teams who could be potential targets for the Packers in the upcoming draft. Let’s get started with Clemson, the No. 12 seed.

DeMonte Capehart, DT

Capehart would clog up running lanes in the middle of Jeff Hafley’s defense. With his size and strength, Capehart roots in and eats up space. The Clemson defensive tackle has the power to forklift offensive lineman out of his way to make plays behind the line of scrimmage.

With his ability to two-gap, Capehart could step in immediately and help shore up a team’s run defense. With his brute strength, he can collapse the pocket. However, he may never be more than a two-down player at the next level. Thus far this season he’s recorded three pressures and zero sacks.

As a likely Day 3 pick, Capehart doesn’t need to be John Randle. A team would be drafting him for his run-stopping ability.

The Packers will likely be in the market for TJ Slaton’s replacement and Capehart could slot in nicely.

Phil Mafah, RB

After spending a Day 2 pick on Marshawn Lloyd a year ago and with the emergence of Emmanuel Wilson and Chris Brooks, it’s hard to see a pathway where the Packers use premium draft capital on a running back during the 2025 draft.

Mafah is a bigger back that runs with good patience and vision. The Clemson back is a bruising back that runs through initial contact. Over the past two seasons, Mafah has racked up 1,347 yards after contact.

Marcus Tate, OG

Tate has started 36 games at left guard for the Tigers and has given up one sack and 11 pressures thus far this season. Tate moves with a bounce in his step and looks comfortable on the move.

Antonio Williams, WR

The Packers are set at wide receiver and Gutekunst probably sits up at night contemplating which young playmakers he’ll re-sign out of the group.

Williams is a dynamic playmaker, who finds a second gear in space and is able to create chunk plays.

The Clemson wide receiver also brings special teams value as a punt returner. He has 34 returns for his career with an 8.8 yards per return average. This season he’s averaging 9.7 yards per return.

Barrett Carter is another name that Packers fans should watch for the Tigers. The Clemson linebacker is an explosive mover, but he may be undersized for Green Bay’s liking.

Jake Briningstool is an athletic tight end. With Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave already in the fold, it’s unlikely that the Packers would look to add him to the mix.

Clemson basketball storms into new USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll after statement wins

Clemson makes a BIG jump into the Top 25 of the Coaches Poll after wins over Kentucky and Miami.

For the first time all season, coach Brad Brownell’s Clemson Tigers have surged into the Top 25 of the USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll, released Monday.

Clemson (9-1 overall) rose 29 spots to land at No. 16 in the Coaches Poll following their 70-66 win over Mark Pope and Kentucky Wildcats last Tuesday at Littlejohn Coliseum in the ACC-SEC Challenge. The Tigers then opened conference play on Saturday by beating the Miami Hurricanes, 65-55, in Coral Gables.

Against Kentucky, Ian Schieffelin had 11 points and a career-high 20 rebounds as the Tigers took down the fourth-ranked Wildcats to mark their latest win over a college basketball blue blood.

Clemson defeated North Carolina last season, marking only the second time in school history the Tigers had won in Chapel Hill. They beat the Arizona Wildcats in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament to reach the Elite 8 for just the second time.

The Tigers ranked one spot behind the Ole Miss Rebels at No. 15 and one spot ahead of the Oklahoma Sooners at No. 17 in Monday’s Coaches Poll.

Clemson will host the Memphis Tigers (7-2) in another big nonconference matchup this Saturday at Littlejohn. Tipoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET. The game can be seen on ESPN2.

Rick Barnes’ Tennessee Volunteers (8-0) moved to No. 1 in the poll following their 96-70 blowout win over the Syracuse Orange. The previously top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks (7-2) suffered their first losses of the season, in back to back games to the Creighton Bluejays in Omaha and the Missouri Tigers in Columbia.

Elsewhere in the top five, the Auburn Tigers (8-1) stayed at No. 2 for the second straight week, followed by the Iowa State Cyclones (7-1) at No. 3 and Marquette Golden Eagles (9-1) at No. 4. Kentucky (8-1) rounded out the top five at No. 5.

Clemson was one of only two ACC teams ranked in the Coaches Poll. Cooper Flagg and the Duke Blue Devils (7-2) were the highest-ranked conference team at No. 6. The ACC went 2-14 against the SEC in the ACC-SEC Challenge, with Clemson and the Louisville Cardinals the only ACC teams to win last week’s games.

Clemson kicks field goal as time expires to upend SMU in ACC Championship Game

Clemson survives SMU’s charge to win ACC Championship

Clemson had the ACC Championship in its collective hands. The Tigers saw SMU try and rip if from them. A 56-yard field goal by Nolan Hauser saved the day.

The Tigers downed the Mustangs 34-31 in a thrilling ACC Championship Game on Saturday in Charlotte.

The win guarantees Clemson a spot in the CFP. It also ensures there will be controversy when the 12 teams are announced on Sunday.

SMU, which scored 17 straight points in the fourth quarter to tie the game, finishes 11-2. Will that be enough to get the Mustangs one of the coveted 12 spots or will the committee leave them out?

So, an ACC team, Clemson, could be responsible for knocking out a team that has a better record than it by one game, SMU.

Adam Randall of Clemson returned a kickoff 41 yards to the 45 after SMU tied the game. A pass to Antonio Williams nioved the ball to the SMU 38 setting the stage for Hauser.

ACC championship game: Players to know, predictions and more

The most consequential conference championship game kicks off in Charlotte on Saturday.

The ACC championship is by far the most consequential of all the title games on Saturday. When No. 8 SMU and No. 17 Clemson meet in Charlotte, there are multiple playoff spots on the line.

In the most simple terms: if SMU wins, both the Mustangs and Alabama Crimson Tide will punch their ticket to the 12-team College Football Playoff. If Clemson wins, the Tigers will earn the ACC’s automatic berth, leaving the committee to decide between Alabama, SMU and South Carolina for the final at-large bid.

Of course, there’s also a ton of pride at stake, too. Clemson won the conference championship in 2011, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2022. The Tigers feel they own the ACC and it’s tough to argue that point. SMU waltzing into the ACC and winning the conference in Year 1 would be quite an ego bruise for the more long-time members.

Players To Watch

Clemson: Cade Klubnik, QB

Klubnik has taken a step forward as a junior, cutting his interceptions nearly in half and piling 10 more scores on his total from last season. Klubnik has thrown for 3,041 yards and 29 touchdowns to just five interceptions. He’s also been more aggressive as a runner this year, totaling 437 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground, including his game-winning scramble against Pitt earlier this season that kept the Tigers’ CFP hopes alive.

SMU: Brashard Smith, RB

Smith does it all for SMU’s offense and has proven to be potent as a runner and receiver. He leads the Mustangs’ offense with 1,426 yards from scrimmage and 17 touchdowns, the latter of which leads the ACC. After having a supporting role at Miami for the previous three seasons, Smith has become a star for SMU and has them on the cusp of making the College Football Playoff for the first time ever.

Staff Picks

Opening Line: Clemson -1.5

Blake Schuster: SMU -2.5

I was all set to pick Clemson until South Carolina turned the Tigers’ defense into Swiss cheese.

Mitchell Northam: Clemson +2.5

I think SMU is good and deserves a CFP spot. Whether the committee agrees with me is another matter. But this is turf that Clemson dominates on, and I think we’re about to witness a classic, “Screw you, we’re still Clemson” type performance. The Tigers are 8-0 in ACC championship games since 2011. Their only loss in Charlotte in that span was in 2021 to Georgia — and SMU ain’t Georgia.

Christian D’Andrea: Clemson +2.5

SMU AIN’T PLAYED NOBODY, PAWLLLLLL.

Michelle Martinelli: Clemson +2.5

I am begging SMU to make me wrong on another pick involving Clemson.

Tyler Nettuno: SMU -2.5

The Mustangs truly have skated by on a weak schedule; there’s no denying it. But they’re also a well-rounded team, and I think this is a good matchup for them.

Duke football has the second-best record in the ACC over the last three seasons

Since the start of the 2022 season, the Duke Blue Devils have the second-best win percentage of any ACC football program.

The Duke Blue Devils have found some incredible form on the gridiron over the last three seasons, winning at least eight games in every campaign despite an offseason coaching change. However, the performance in Durham looks even more impressive when compared to the team’s peers around the conference.

Since the start of the 2022 season, Duke has won 26 games, tied for the second-most of any ACC team. In fact, because of an additional loss by the Louisville Cardinals (albeit in last year’s conference championship game), the Blue Devils have the second-best win percentage among the 14 traditional ACC teams in that period.

Duke has an overall win percentage of 68.4% in this recent run. Only the Clemson Tigers (74.4%) have been better, and only five total ACC programs have won more than 60% of their contests in the last three seasons. Even the Florida State Seminoles (64.1%) dropped below the Blue Devils thanks to a stunning 2-10 campaign in 2024.

Even just in conference games, Duke is one of four ACC teams with a .500 record or better in each of the last three seasons. Only Clemson (19-5) and Louisville (16-8) have been better than the Blue Devils’ 14-10 record against conference opponents.

Check out each team’s record, both overall and in conference play, below (note that new members SMU, Stanford, and California were excluded due to their different conference schedules in 2022-23).
