Social media reacts: Clemson United wins 2nd national championship in 3 years

Clemson United defeated Notre Dame on Monday night to win its second national championship in three years.

The Clemson men’s soccer team made program history on Monday night when it defeated Notre Dame 2-1 to win the national championship for the second time in three years.

Taking on the Irish in Louisville, Kentucky, the Tigers scored early after midfielder Brandon Parrish sent a shot in the bottom right corner of the goal to give Clemson a one-goal lead with roughly 18 minutes left in the first half.

Clemson star midfielder Ousmane Sylla extended the Tigers’ lead to 2-0 in the 70th minute when he received a pass from Alex Meinhard and snuck a shot past Notre Dame goalkeeper Bryan Dowd. Although Notre Dame got on the board in the final minute, the Tigers’ two goals were too much for the Irish to overcome.

With the victory, Clemson won its fourth national title in program history, adding to the 2021, 1987 and 1984 seasons when the team won it all.

Clemson Men’s Soccer advances to the National Championship

Clemson men’s soccer takes down West Virginia and advances to the National Championship.

LOUISVILLE – Ninth-seeded Clemson advanced to the National Championship match with a 1-0 shutout over No. 5 West Virginia (17-3-4) in the College Cup semifinal at Lynn Family Stadium in Louisville, Ky. Kickoff for the final is scheduled for Monday at 6 p.m. and will be shown on ESPNU against either Notre Dame or Oregon State. Shawn Smart’s second goal of the season, an incredible strike in the 37th minute, was all the Tigers would need in picking up the victory.

The Tigers (14-3-5) will advance to play in their sixth National Championship match in school history, the most recent a 2-0 victory over Washington in 2021. Clemson has claimed three titles in its history, including the 1984 and 1987 championships, and has appeared in three title games since 2015.

Clemson put five shots on goal, and surrendered just two all night against the Mountaineers in the teams’ first meeting since 1974. Joseph Andema earned the shutout, his fourth of the NCAA Tournament and tenth on the season.

Shawn Smart got the Tigers on the board in the 37th minute with a wicked right foot on a give-and-go with Mohamed Seye. Smart controlled a ball in the middle of the field and played a high ball in to Seye, who headed it back to Smart. Smart got his right foot on it and sent it near-side with pace past WVU keeper Jackson Lee.

West Virginia had a chance for the equalizer in the 58th minute as Marcus Caldeira sent a rocket from long, but the ball sailed just high above Andema’s outstretched hand.

Alex Meinhard gave the Tigers a chance to double the lead in the 65th minute as he dribbled to the left side of the box and let a shot go that Lee saved with his left foot. Trimnal had another chance in the 84th that Lee again kept out of net. However, Smart’s goal would stand as the Tiger defense was up to the challenge.

Clemson United will open its 2022 season and National Championship defense at Historic Riggs Field against Indiana University. The season opener will take place on the evening of Friday, August 26 at 7 p.m.

The Alliance matchup features two of the most storied programs in college soccer, with 11 National Championships between the pair, including two of the last 10. Both teams are in the top-10 in all-time winning percentage and NCAA Tournament final four appearances, with Indiana holding a streak of 35 consecutive selections to the NCAA Tournament.

“We are extremely excited about this historic match,” stated Head Coach Mike Noonan. “It was paramount to us to provide our fans with an opening matchup that reflects the elite level of this program, and it is important to begin our title defense with a competitive battle.”

The Tigers and Hoosiers have faced off 11 times, with Indiana leading the series 6-4-1. It was the Hoosiers who came out on top of the most recent battle, defeating Clemson in Bloomington, Ind. on August 31, 2012 by a score of 3-0.

Both teams have won their conference 15 times in their rich histories. They have met in the NCAA Tournament four times and have split those matches 2-2. In all cases, the team who won the Clemson/Indiana match in the NCAA Tournament has gone on to play in the National Championship.

The remainder of Clemson United’s 2022 schedule will be released in the near future. Season tickets for the 2022 campaign go on sale on July 11 on ClemsonTigers.com.

Coming off the Clemson men’s soccer team’s latest national championship this past December, head coach Mike Noonan has noticed some differences as he recruits and tries to continue restocking his program’s talent.

“The phone rings a little bit more, and the door opens a lot quicker,” Noonan told The Clemson Insider on Wednesday at the Prowl and Growl at the Rock Hill Sports and Event Center in Rock Hill, S.C.

Sure, Noonan’s phone is more abuzz and it’s even easier for him and the Tigers to get their foot in the door with top prospects coming off the team’s 2021 National Championship run that saw Clemson upend No. 2 Washington, 2-0, to win the 2021 Men’s Soccer National Championship.

But another change for Noonan, a two-time ACC Champion and the National Coach of the Year in 2021 who received a contract extension from Clemson in February, is the fact he and his staff have the luxury to be a little more picky with the players they recruit after leading the program to its third national title.

“We’ve had to be a little bit finer in what we’re doing and how we’re doing it,” Noonan said. “But at the same point, we lost a lot of players. So, we’re bringing in 13 players this year, and that’s probably the biggest cohort I’ve brought in since we got here 13 years ago. But to be able to select the players a little bit more selectively than maybe we had in the past.”

Clemson’s most recent national championship will keep Mike Noonan around for at least a couple more years.

Clemson’s men’s soccer coach, who led the program to its first national title in more than three decades this past season, has been rewarded with a two-year contract extension. The action was approved by Clemson University Board of Trustees Compensation Committee on Wednesday.

The extension, which comes just two years after he signed a new six-year contract, runs Noonan’s contract through the 2027 season. He’ll be paid $400,000 next season — a raise from his previous salary of $310,000 — with an annual increase of $20,000 that will reach $500,000 in the final year of the contract.

Clemson went 16-5-2 in Noonan’s 12th season at the helm, which included five wins in the NCAA Tournament en route to the third national title in program history. The Tigers blanked Washington in the championship match back in December to deliver the first since 1987.

The Clemson Tigers extended their win streak over rival South Carolina to eight straight games with an emphatic 5-0 victory on Friday night in front of a packed Historic Riggs Field. The Tigers took advantage of two Gamecock red cards and scored five second-half goals to improve to 3-0 on the young season.

The first half went scoreless, but was far from uneventful. The Tigers strung together several chances that just missed the back of the net. South Carolina’s Jake O’Connor earned a second yellow card and was sent off in the 36th minute.

After earning a yellow card for dissent early in the match, Gamecocks’ midfielder Jordan Matthews was given his second yellow on a sliding challenge against Clemson’s Josh Hallenberger. South Carolina was forced to play the remaining 48 minutes of the match down two men.

While Clemson dominated second-half possession, it wasn’t until the 66th minute when Ousmane Sylla made a beautiful run into the South Carolina penalty box and struck the first goal of the match with the outside of his right foot past the goalkeeper and into the net. Mohamed Seye then scored two goals in the span of 11 minutes to extend the lead to 3-0 with just 10 minutes remaining in the match, all but putting the game out of reach for the undermanned Gamecocks.

Tim Ströbeck netted his first career goal as a Tiger on a gorgeous bended ball that found the top left corner of the frame, and Luis Felipe Fernandez-Salvador put the final nail in the coffin with a lofted header off a Charlie Asensio cross.

After the game, Mike Noonan, who advanced to 13-3 against South Carolina as Clemson’s head coach, gave praise to the thousands of Tiger faithful that came to support the team. “There is no better crowd in college soccer than Clemson’s. They are unbelievable… we are looking forward to Monday, we’re looking forward to every time we can play in front of them.”

Up next, the Tigers will return to Historic Riggs Field to take on South Florida on Monday night. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. and the match is set to be broadcast on the ACC Network.
