Clemson to face SEC team in final Field of 64 projections

A look at the teams Clemson is expected to face in the final Field of 64 projections from D1Baseball, Baseball America and On3 sports.

The final Field of 64 projections for the 2024 NCAA Baseball Tournament were unveiled by D1Baseball and Baseball America Monday morning.

While Clemson (41-14 overall) remained a top-eight national seed (No. 6 overall), there was a change in which teams the Tigers will draw at their on-site regional at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

D1Baseball now sees SEC Tournament runner-up and reigning national champion LSU visiting Doug Kingsmore Stadium for the four-team, double-elimination Clemson Regional.

The Bayou Bengals have been on a tear of late, winning seven straight contests before falling 4-3 in Sunday’s SEC Tournament finale against consensus projected No. 1 overall seed Tennessee.

LSU (40-21) beat South Carolina twice in the SEC Tournament, as well as NCAA regional host Georgia and projected top-eight national seed Kentucky. The Tigers lost only one regular-season series after being swept at Tennessee back on April 14. They’re one of the hottest teams in the country, going 18-5 since then.

D1Baseball’s projections have College of Charleston and Bryant in Clemson’s regional.

On3 also has the Tigers as the No. 6 national seed. Their final projections ahead of the tournament have Clemson hosting LSU, as well as James Madison (34-23) and Big South Tournament champion High Point (34-25).

Baseball America has another SEC team projected for the Clemson Regional: in-state rival South Carolina (36-23). The Gamecocks made it all the way to the semifinal round of the SEC Tournament Saturday before being eliminated by LSU.

Coastal Carolina (34-23) and Ivy League Tournament champion Penn (24-23) join South Carolina in Baseball America’s projected Clemson Regional.

Official seeding and regional matchups for the tournament will be announced during the NCAA Baseball Selection Show Monday at noon EDT on ESPN2.

Watch former Clemson pitcher strike out Shohei Ohtani

Clemson alum Carson Spiers had quite a day for the Cincinnati Reds Sunday.

How many former Clemson Tigers pitchers can lay claim to having struck out Major League Baseball star Shohei Ohtani?

Aside from Atlanta Braves ace Spencer Strider, we’re not entirely sure.

Nevertheless, former Tigers standout Carson Spiers threw 3 1/3 innings of solid relief in the Cincinnati Reds’ 4-1 victory over the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers at Great American Ball Park on Sunday.

Spiers struck out three batters without allowing a walk. One of those strikeout victims was Ohtani (Mookie Betts was another).

Spiers’ efforts helped the Reds finish off a three-game sweep of the Dodgers.

Sunday marked Spiers’ fourth relief appearance this season. In 13 2/3 innings, the 26-year-old right-hander has a 3.29 ERA with eight strikeouts and three walks.

Spiers made his major league debut with the Reds in 2023 and pitched in four games, including two starts. He finished 0-1 with a 6.92 ERA in 13 innings.

A South Carolina native, Spiers attended Greenville High School before joining Clemson in 2017. In four years with the Tigers, he went 7-7 with a 2.47 ERA and 19 saves in 109 1/3 innings. The Reds signed Spiers as an non-drafted free agent in 2020.

It’s Clemson vs. South Carolina in this Field of 64 projection for NCAA Tournament

Ready for another round of Clemson vs. South Carolina? It may soon be happening.

Ready for another round of Clemson vs. South Carolina in the NCAA Baseball Tournament?

It may soon be happening, according to the latest Field of 64 projections for the 64-team postseason from D1Baseball.

The Tigers (41-14 overall) held as a top-eight national seed (No. 6 overall) in D1Baseball’s updated postseason outlook Saturday. The Gamecocks are D1Baseball’s projected No. 2 seed for the four-team, double-elimination Clemson Regional.

South Carolina, which defeated Alabama and Arkansas at the SEC Tournament this week, is paired with College of Charleston and Samford as the three teams projected by D1Baseball to join the host Tigers at the on-site regional at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Clemson-South Carolina is one of the best rivalries in college baseball. The two teams have a rich postseason history, having met twice at the College World Series in Omaha (in 2002 and 2010).

The Gamecocks got the best of the Tigers both times in Omaha, beating Clemson twice in the 2002 semifinals to advance to the championship game against eventual national champion Texas.

Eight years later, the Gamecocks again beat the Tigers twice in the semifinals to meet UCLA in the best-of-three CWS Finals. South Carolina went on to beat the Bruins to win the first of two back-to-back national championships under former coach Ray Tanner. Clemson hasn’t made a College World Series appearance since 2010.

The two teams meet annually in the regular season. Clemson won both games against the Gamecocks this season by identical 5-4 scores in a rain-shortened series back in early March.

Baseball America also had the Tigers as the No. 6 overall seed in their updated postseason projections Saturday. Unlike D1Baseball, Baseball America has the Tigers projected to host Texas, James Madison and Florida A&M at the Clemson Regional.

Tennessee remained the No. 1 overall seed in both D1Baseball and Baseball America’s updated projections Saturday.

The unveiling of the 16 NCAA Tournament regional host sites is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. EDT Sunday. The NCAA Tournament Selection Show will air live on ESPN2 Monday at noon.

New Field of 64 projection sees Clemson baseball hosting familiar opponents in regional

Clemson baseball is a top eight national seed in Baseball America’s new Field of 64 projections for the 2024 NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament.

The Clemson Tigers seem like a safe bet to finish as a top eight national seed for the 2024 NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament.

With the regular season complete and Selection Monday less than a week away to determine the Field of 64 that will compete for a spot in the College World Series in Omaha, the Tigers are ranked in the top five in two of the major Top 25 polls, including the USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll.

In its new Field of 64 projections for the postseason, Baseball America has Clemson as its No. 6 overall national seed, one spot behind Arkansas and one ahead of Oklahoma. If that holds, the Tigers would host a best-of-three Super Regional — if they win their four-team, double-elimination on-site regional.

In Baseball America’s updated projections Tuesday, Clemson would welcome Alabama, UNC Greensboro and Presbyterian to Doug Kingsmore Stadium for its Clemson Regional.

The Tigers beat Presbyterian twice in the regular season and swept UNC Greensboro back on March 10. Alabama is the No. 7 seed in the SEC Tournament and was a consistent Top 25 team for much of the season prior to this week.

Tennessee was projected No. 1 overall among the top eight national seeds by Baseball America. North Carolina was projected No. 2 with Texas A&M at No. 3 and Kentucky at No. 4. The Volunteers have been No. 1 in every major Top 25 ranking for three consecutive weeks.

Clemson won the ACC Atlantic Division title and will be a No. 2 seed in this week’s ACC Tournament in Charlotte. The Tigers will face Miami at 11 a.m. EDT Thursday. The game can be seen on ACC Network. Clemson won two of three against the Hurricanes in the teams’ regular-season series in Miami on Easter Weekend.

Aidan Knaak, Blake Wright, Cam Cannarella earn ACC honors

Aidan Knaak, Blake Wright, and Cam Cannarella were recognized by the ACC Monday.

Three Clemson Tigers baseball players received All-Conference Team recognition by the ACC Monday.

Right-hander Aidan Knaak was named a First Team All-ACC selection, as well as being named to the All-ACC Freshman Team for his performance during the regular season. Knaak wrapped up a stellar freshman season by going 5-1 with a 2.96 ERA in a team-best 13 starts.

Second baseman Blake Wright received Second Team All-ACC honors. Wright led the Tigers in batting average (.341), home runs (21) and RBIs (70) during the regular season. He was the only Tigers player to play in all 53 games. Wright was recently named a semifinalist for both the Dick Howser Trophy and the Golden Spikes Award.

Centerfielder Cam Cannarella was received Third Team All-ACC recognition. After a sensational freshman season in 2023, Cannarella followed it up with a strong 2024 campaign in which he batted .332 with nine home runs, 16 doubles, 51 RBIs, and a .411 on-base percentage in 51 games. Cannarella’s .332 average was second-best on the team.

Of the major individual awards announced by the ACC Monday, Florida State’s James Tibbs III took home Player of the Year honors. Wake Forest’s Chase Burns, the NCAA Division I strikeout leader (169 strikeouts in 89 innings pitched), was named Pitcher of the Year.

Georgia Tech outfielder Drew Burress was named Freshman of the Year, and North Carolina outfielder Vance Honeycutt earned Defensive Player of the Year for the second year in a row.

North Carolina’s Scott Forbes was named Coach of the Year. The Tar Heels won the ACC regular-season championship and are the No. 1 seed in this week’s ACC Tournament. Clemson is the No. 2 seed and will face Miami in the Tigers’ tournament opener Thursday in Charlotte.

Blake Wright named Golden Spikes Award semifinalist

Blake Wright has been named a semifinalist for the annual Golden Spikes Award.

CLEMSON, S.C. – Senior infielder Blake Wright was named one of 25 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award on Monday. The accolade is presented each year to the top amateur baseball player in the nation by USA Baseball. Earlier this month, Wright was named a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, which is also presented to the national player-of-the-year.

Wright (Belleair, Fla.) has split time at third base and second base in 2024. The team co-captain is hitting .341 with 21 homers, two triples, eight doubles, 70 RBIs, 62 runs and a .677 slugging percentage as the only Tiger to play all 53 games. He has a .961 fielding percentage, committing only six errors in 153 chances.

In his career, he is hitting .301 with 29 doubles, two triples, 41 homers, 160 RBIs, 131 runs and nine steals in 169 games (162 starts).
