Notre Dame men’s soccer loses ACC Tournament game on Hail Mary goal

You absolutely must see this.

The Notre Dame men’s soccer team lost its ACC Tournament opener to Stanford in the most improbable fashion. The final score was 3-2, but that doesn’t begin to describe how that score occurred.

Trailing, 2-1, with 12 seconds left, the Irish had a free kick inside the penalty area. [autotag]Matthew Roou[/autotag], who had scored the Irish’s first goal, softly kicked the ball to [autotag]Mitch Ferguson[/autotag], who then fired it home to tie the game.

Shortly after the Cardinal reset play from midfield, Dylan Hooper fired a desperation kick from slightly further away. The shot turned out to be on goal, and goalkeeper [autotag]Collin Travasos[/autotag] wasn’t able to stop it.

The Cardinal somehow had regained the lead with one second left, and that lead would stand, enabling them to play Clemson in the quarterfinals.

It was as heartbreaking an ending as it could have been for the 7-5-5 Irish, who now must wait until the Nov. 18 selection show to find out if they made the NCAA Tournament. And all because of a crazy sequence that starts at 1:21 in the below video:

Never say you’ve seen everything in sports. Something new always will find a way.

Dabo Swinney shares a team injury update after win over Wake Forest

Swinney shares a team injury update

Following Clemson football’s 49-14 victory over Wake Forest, head coach Dabo Swinney shared several updates on the Tigers’ injury situation.

Freshman wide receiver Bryant Wesco is considered day-to-day after an ankle injury he suffered against Florida State. Sophomore receiver Tyler Brown, also dealing with an ankle issue, is now week-to-week. Swinney mentioned that while Brown was available for the Wake Forest game if needed, he will be “shut down” on Sunday to focus on recovery. Brown might return following Clemson’s open date on October 26, just after their game against Virginia next Saturday.

Swinney also updated other key players. Offensive lineman Collin Sadler, who was sidelined with a calf injury, and defensive tackle Stephiylan Green, out with an undisclosed injury, are both day-to-day. Neither player traveled to Wake Forest, but Swinney is optimistic they’ll make progress by early next week.

Clemson (5-1) will host Virginia in Death Valley next Saturday, with a noon kickoff on ACC Network. This will be the Tigers’ last game before their bye week.

Clemson offense continues to soar, Tigers take down Wake Forest

Clemson dominates Wake Forest for another strong win.

No. 10 Clemson football powered past Wake Forest 49-14 on Saturday at Allegacy Stadium, notching a fifth consecutive win and extending their series streak to 16 victories over the Demon Deacons.

Wake Forest struck first with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Hank Bachmeier to Horatio Fields, marking the first time Clemson has allowed a first-quarter score this season. But the Tigers soon took control, piling on 42 combined points in the second and third quarters to secure the win.

Quarterback Cade Klubnik was key, throwing for 309 yards and three touchdowns on 31 of 41 passing, while Phil Mafah added two rushing scores and 108 yards on the ground. The Tigers’ 566-yard offensive showcase included a memorable third-quarter trick play: a double-pass from Klubnik to Antonio Williams, who found tight end Jake Briningstool for a 28-yard touchdown. Briningstool finished with seven catches for 104 yards.

Clemson, now 5-1 overall and undefeated in ACC play, returns home next Saturday for a noon kickoff against Virginia. The game will mark a reunion with Cavaliers head coach Tony Elliott, a former Clemson player and coach.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney shares injury updates after win over Florida State

Swinney shares a team injury update after the Tigers took down Florida State.

After Clemson football’s 29-13 win over Florida State, head coach Dabo Swinney shared several injury updates for the Tigers. Quarterback Cade Klubnik left briefly in the first quarter after a hard hit but quickly re-entered the game. Swinney explained, “They made him come out to make sure he was OK,” adding that while Klubnik needs to be smart about running the ball, he’s showing strong leadership.

Junior receiver Adam Randall was prepared to play if necessary, even after undergoing toe surgery on Sept. 23. Swinney marveled at Randall’s readiness, calling it “absolutely amazing.” Randall ultimately didn’t play, but Swinney was relieved not to need him.

Defensive lineman Peter Woods also returned after missing two games due to a knee injury. Swinney said Woods has been easing back into action and hopes he can fully participate in practice next week. “Today was the day,” Swinney said, expressing optimism about Woods’ continued recovery.

Sophomore offensive lineman Harris Sewell and redshirt freshman defensive lineman Stephiylan Green didn’t travel for the FSU game due to injuries but are expected to rejoin the lineup soon. Additionally, redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Collin Sadler was held out of most practices due to a flare-up but felt good enough to suit up.

Now 4-1 on the season, Clemson looks ahead to its road game against Wake Forest on Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C., with kickoff set for noon on ESPN. The Tigers will aim for their fifth straight win as they continue their ACC campaign.

Jake Briningstool on Clemson football getting better every day under Garrett Riley

The Tigers get better by the day under Riley.

Clemson’s dominant win over Appalachian State last Saturday showed just how well the team could recover after a tough start to the season.

The Tigers scored a record-setting 56 points in the first half, making ACC history and moving past their Week 1 loss to Georgia. The team’s resilience and determination were on full display, and tight end Jake Briningstool credited their ability to stay focused on constant growth. “Our biggest thing is just trying to get better every single day,” Briningstool said, pointing to the influence of offensive coordinator Garrett Riley. The philosophy instilled by Riley, which began during his arrival two springs ago, is starting to bear fruit as the offense finds its rhythm.

Briningstool played a significant role in the win, leading the tight ends with seven receptions for 100 yards and two touchdowns. He highlighted the competition within the tight end room, saying, “I think we’ve got a really good tight end room… Just being able to come here, have competition, go to work every single day, and make each other better.” The tight ends combined for 130 yards off nine catches, contributing significantly to Clemson’s offensive dominance. Alongside Briningstool’s stellar showing, quarterback Cade Klubnik shined with seven total touchdowns and 378 passing yards, further demonstrating the potential this offense has. With confidence building, Briningstool believes there’s no limit to what the Tigers can achieve moving forward. “There’s no telling where we can go,” he said.

Fans have patiently waited for Riley’s stamp to be felt on this team and it was definitely felt on Saturday.

Clemson blocks itself in epic failure against Georgia

Two Clemson offensive linemen block each other in an embarrassing play against Georgia football

The Georgia Bulldogs played well in their 34-3 drubbing of the Clemson Tigers. Georgia did an excellent job of taking advantage of Clemson’s miscues and outscored the Tigers 28-3 in the second half.

Georgia faced former UGA offensive line coach Matt Luke, who now holds the same position at Clemson. Luke can’t be happy with how the Tigers played in Week 1. Clemson managed only 46 rushing yards on 23 carries against Georgia. The Tigers totaled only 188 total yards of offense as they struggled to accumulate first downs against the Bulldogs.

Perhaps Clemson’s biggest blunder of the game came when two Clemson offensive linemen both pulled in opposite directions on the same play. The result was that they appeared to block each other and effectively ruined the play.

“Georgia is going to make a lot of people look bad. They made us look bad today,” Clemson Tigers coach Dabo Swinney said after the loss.

Trenton Simpson says it’s ‘awesome’ to be teammates with Nate Wiggins again

Ravens inside linebacker Trenton Simpson says that it’s “awesome” to be teammates with cornerback Nate Wiggins again

The Baltimore Ravens drafted Nate Wiggins in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft. He is expected to play a big role as a young member of Baltimore’s defense, but he isn’t the only former Clemson star to have that role with the Ravens this year.

Wiggins’ college teammate Trenton Simpson was selected in the third round of 2023, which means the two are re-united in Baltimore. Simpson was asked about playing with Wiggins again, to which he said it’s been “awesome” to have Wiggins on his team once more.

“It’s been awesome. Just us being at Clemson and growing together, winning some games together, [and] being on the ACC championship team with [Nate Wiggins] was awesome. But [I’m] just seeing him come in every day, competing. I mean, he’s young, just like I was last year, so him asking ‘Marlo’ [Marlon Humphrey] questions, ‘B. Steve’ [Brandon Stephens] questions, it’s awesome, because the vets we have in this organization are taking all the guys under, and I feel like that’s good to help improve a lot of guys’ careers.”

Simpson had plenty of good things to say about Wiggins, a player that the Ravens will need to play well in order to continue being a top defense in the NFL this season. Both Clemson alumni hopefully have big things ahead, and have the tools to have long and successful careers.

Clemson vs. Georgia: Statistical Breakdown

Breaking down Georgia’s statistical dominance against Clemson

The No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs lived up to the ranking against the No. 14 Clemson Tigers, bludgeoning them 34-3 in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. The over/under was at 49 points and Georgia was favored by at least 11 according to the spread, and they accomplished that goal today. Here’s a look at the statistics from each team.

Statistical Breakdown

Total Yards:

Clemson: 188 yards (402.7 YPG last year, 77th in FCS)

Georgia: 447 yards (496.5 YPG last year, 6th in FCS)

Simply put, Clemson simply couldn’t move the ball against Georgia’s defense today. Their longest drive of the whole game was only 66 yards, which was Clemson’s only scoring drive. That was also helped by a 15-yard roughing the passer call. Even though the game was within one score for the entire first half, Clemson mustered just 71 yards of offense. The only drives that went beyond 50 yards were the field-goal drive and a drive that ended with a turnover on downs late in the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, Georgia’s offense looked better than the scoresheet says at the first half. They racked up 133 yards, but only got six points at the half because they had to punt twice on Clemson’s side of the field. In the second half, the points and yards aligned more, as Georgia gained over 50 yards and scored a touchdown on every single drive except for one punt.

Rushing Statistics:

Clemson: 23 attempts, 46 yards, 0 touchdowns, 2.0 YPC

Georgia: 27 attempts, 169 yards, 2 touchdowns, 6.3 YPC

If you wanted to look at one offensive statistic to see how dominant Georgia was, look no further than rushing yardage. Clemson running backs were only held to 2.0 yards per carry. This is only their third time in the last three seasons where their ever had 2.0 or less yards per carry. It’s made even more baffling that their leading rusher, Phil Mafah, rushed for 59 yards on 16 carries. This is because quarterback Cade Klubnik ran for -17 yards on four carries, which says more about Georgia’s pass rush than their run defense.

Georgia’s rushing offense, on the other hand, was arguably the catalyst of their offense. It didn’t start off well, with Georgia running backs only mustering up 3 yards before the last drive of the first half. But it really took off in the second half behind true freshman Nate Frazier, which helped Georgia keep possession for long stretches of time and forced Clemson to pass more often later in the game.

Passing Statistics:

Cade Klubnik: 18-29, 142 yards, 0 touchdowns, 1 interception, 96.3 passer rating (college) 4.9 YPA

Carson Beck: 23-33, 278 yards, 2 touchdowns, 0 interceptions, 160.7 passer rating, 8.4 YPA

Klubnik once again disappointed in a season opener. His yards per completion was just 7.89 in a game where most quarterbacks have over 10 yards per completion. Some of that had to do with the play calling, but 4.9 yards per attempt is unimpressive and that’s with padding his stats in garbage time, as 50 of his yards were when Clemson was down by at least three scores. By the end, he essentially had to will his team to the end zone (since his running game didn’t help him) and he couldn’t do it. Outside of two impressive throws, he was a non-factor in this game.

Carson Beck, on the other hand, was solid. He had 8.4 yards per attempt, was above average, but still lower than last year’s YPA of 9.95. His passer rating of 160.7 is 17% over the league average too, but somehow lower than his passer rating was last year, at 167.9. Regardless, he played within the system all game and didn’t make any turnovers.

Penalties

Clemson: 3 penalties, 15 yards

Georgia: 7 penalties, 70 yards

One negative note for Georgia is they had way too many penalties in this one. They only averaged about 4 penalties a game last year, but this game was a little undisciplined for them. This number is bloated by two 15-yard penalties. One was an offensive pass-interference that essentially ended their drive before the first half ended, and another that was a roughing the passer penalty that helped set up Clemson to score their only points of the day.

It doesn’t scream a lack of discipline just yet, but it was something to monitor in this game. Georgia will need to make sure they decrease their penalties against better opponents like Alabama in close games. Then again, with the showing they displayed on both sides of the ball, they may not be in many close games this season.

Notre Dame-Texas A&M named second-best game in Week 1

A lot of people will be watching.

The stakes will be high for both Notre Dame and Texas A&M in Week 1 of the 2024 season. While a loss for either team won’t necessarily kill their seasons, it will make the rest of their seasons more challenging. That’s why many people will have their eyes on this game.

College Football Alerts has released what it believes to be the top games for the first full week of college football this season. To the surprise of few if any, the game between the Irish and the Aggies made the list. In fact, only game in all of college football was ranked higher:

Taking a look at this list, it’s appropriate. The only game higher on the list, the one between Georgia and Clemson, is the only one that features two teams collectively ranked higher in the national preseason poll.

So if you’re a college football fan and only watch two games this coming weekend, make it the ones involving the Bulldogs, Tigers, Irish and Aggies.
