In-state WR sees bond with Grisham grow stronger during Clemson visit

It wasn’t Clay Pender’s first time at Death Valley. But when the versatile in-state prospect from Barnwell (S.C.) High School attended Clemson’s spring game on April 9 – his first time seeing a contest there as a recruit – being in The Valley seemed more significant to him.

“I’ve been there before but it was when I was younger,” Pender told The Clemson Insider. “I hadn’t realized it before, but it was crazy for a spring game. It means more when you could also possibly be playing there in the future.”

Pender, a wide receiver/athlete in the 2023 class, enjoyed the spring game – even though the weather wasn’t ideal – and being able to tour the facilities during his unofficial visit.

“It was really nice, the atmosphere was great. It was also very cold,” he said with a laugh.

“I really liked the facilities, especially the nutrition bar in the weight room, and the recovery rooms.”

Pender (6-1, 170) has stayed in touch with Tyler Grisham since working out with Clemson’s receivers coach at the Dabo Swinney Camp last June and felt their relationship grew stronger during the visit.

“He took me on a little tour around the facilities and we were just talking and having a good time,” Pender said. “He sat down at the table with me and my father while eating and had a private tour, so a lot of one-on-one time.”

Pender told TCI recently that Clemson is among the schools he’s feeling the most love from at this point in his recruiting process, along with Georgia State, Wofford, The Citadel and Charleston Southern.

He said the Clemson spring game visit gave him a better feel for where he stands with Grisham and the Tigers in the recruiting process right now and their interest in him.

“I think it kind of showed me that it’s definitely a possibility that I could get an offer,” he said. “I just got to keep working and God will guide me along the way.”

Clemson assistant coach Nick Eason stopped by Pender’s high school on Thursday.

Pender has seen action in all three phases of the game for his high school team, playing on both sides of the ball at receiver, running back, free safety and cornerback, in addition to handling special teams duties as a kicker and punter.

Pender comes from an athletic family, as his uncle, Bru, was a defensive back at South Carolina, and his father played college baseball at USC Aiken.

To say Clay Pender is looking forward to visiting Clemson this weekend might be an understatement.

The versatile in-state wide receiver/athlete in the 2023 class from Barnwell (S.C.) High School will be among the recruits in attendance for the Tigers’ spring game Saturday and has had this particular trip circled on his calendar.

“I’m very excited,” Pender told The Clemson Insider. “I’ve enjoyed all my other visits, but this visit is the one I wanted the most. I just love what Clemson stands for and I like the history of winning.”

Pender, who participated in the Dabo Swinney Camp last summer, can’t wait to get back on campus and get a taste of the environment at Death Valley – as well as hopefully spend some time interacting with the Tigers’ head coach.

“I just wanna feel the atmosphere. Especially being in Death Valley, I expect a surreal experience,” he said. “Also would love to be able to talk with Coach Swinney.”

Pender (6-1, 170) has stayed in touch with Tyler Grisham since working out with Clemson’s receivers coach at the Swinney Camp last June and hopes to see their relationship grow stronger during Saturday’s visit.

“I feel like we have a good relationship and can hold a good conversation when we have one,” Pender said. “Really look forward to speaking with him in person for the first time since last summer. Really would love to improve our relationship.”

Pender named Clemson among the schools he’s feeling the most love from at this point in his recruiting process, along with Georgia State, Wofford, The Citadel and Charleston Southern. He has been to Georgia State and Wofford recently, while he is planning to visit The Citadel and expects to visit North Greenville soon as well.

Grisham staying in touch with versatile in-state WR

Tyler Grisham has stayed in touch with a versatile in-state prospect in the 2023 class who camped at Clemson last summer and is drawing interest from a number of Division I programs.

Barnwell (S.C.) High School wide receiver/athlete Clay Pender has kept in contact with Grisham since working out with Clemson’s receivers coach at the Dabo Swinney Camp last June.

“We were really in touch during camp season and being up there for a camp during the summer,” Pender told TCI recently. “Just talking about my film and I just text him to check in. A few other coaches follow me from Clemson, but Coach Grisham is the one that stays in touch.”

Grisham has made a great impression on Pender and has expressed interest in the 6-foot-1, 170-pound junior.

“He’s an awesome dude,” Pender said. “He’s a funny guy, too. I like to think we have a great relationship. He always jokes about how I’d look like Hunter Renfrow out there with the Clemson gear on. I think he really likes my hands and speed. He saw me work out at the camp and was impressed by my route running. He also likes that I can play multiple positions so it doesn’t limit me to what I can do.”

Pender sees action in all three phases of the game for his high school team, playing on both sides of the ball at receiver, running back, free safety and cornerback, in addition to handling special teams duties as a kicker and punter.

“I’m like a Swiss Army knife,” Pender said, laughing. “I would describe myself as a playmaker and a gamer. I’m willing to do whatever it takes to bring home the W. Nothing would be possible without my teammates. So, I really love those guys who play beside me.”

Along with Grisham and Clemson, schools such as South Carolina, Mississippi State, Georgia State, Charleston Southern and the University of Pennsylvania are staying in touch with Pender, who made visits during the season to Georgia State, NC State, UNC Charlotte and Furman.

Pender was raised in a family of South Carolina fans that includes his uncle, Bru Pender, a Barnwell High product who was a defensive back for the Gamecocks from 1990-93.

But while Clay grew up a South Carolina fan, he would love to have the chance to suit up for Swinney and the Tigers in the future.

“I love everything Dabo stands for,” Pender said. “He’s a great head coach and knows how to win. Clemson is a winning program and I really like that. It’d mean a lot to me to get an offer from Clemson, especially it being the first offer. That first offer is really going to have that special place because I know the coaches took that chance on me. I just need that one opportunity to show the world what I can do, and I can’t wait to prove it.”

Clay comes from an athletic family, as not only did his uncle play football at South Carolina, but his father played college baseball at USC Aiken and his brother, Craig, is a quarterback at Cumberland University in Tennessee.
