Packers claim rookie kicker Brayden Narveson off waivers from Titans

The Packers claimed rookie kicker Brayden Narveson off waivers from the Titans on Wednesday.

The Green Bay Packers found their new kicker to start the 2024 season: Rookie Brayden Narveson. The team claimed Narveson off waivers from the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday.

Greg Joseph is expected to be released in a corresponding roster move.

Narveson went undrafted out of NC State this year. During the preseason, Narveson made 6-of-7 field goals — with his only miss coming from 58 yards — and both extra point attempts. Among his six field goals was a go-ahead 59-yarder and game-winning 46-yarder in the fourth quarter vs. the Seattle Seahawks.

The Packers cut Anders Carlson and kept Joseph on the initial 53-man roster on Tuesday. Narveson will take Joseph’s roster spot.

Neither Carlson nor Joseph did enough to win the job during an uninspiring kicking competition at Packers training camp.

Narveson made a 57-yard field goal during his final season at NC State. He connected on 18 of 23 field goals and all 38 extra point attempts in 2023. Over five seasons at a collegiate career, Narveson made all 196 extra point attempts and 71 of 91 field goals.

Here’s Narveson’s 59-yarder vs. the Seahawks:

Packers claim CB Kyu Blu Kelly off waivers from Seahawks

The Packers claimed CB Kyu Blu Kelly, a fifth-round pick in the 2023 draft, off waivers from the Seahawks.

The Green Bay Packers claimed cornerback Kyu Blu Kelly off of waivers from the Seattle Seahawks on Monday, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

Kelly was a fifth-round pick out of Stanford by the Baltimore Ravens in 2023. He was waived by the Ravens at final roster cutdowns in August and claimed by the Seahawks. Over five games in 2023, Kelly played 38 special teams snaps.

During the preseason, Kelly was on the field for 118 snaps from scrimmage. He produced six tackles, gave up six catches for 73 yards and a touchdown on 10 targets and had one penalty. The Ravens played him primarily outside at corner.

Kelly (6-0, 193) is 22 years old. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.52 seconds (1.49-second 10-yard split), hit 36″ in the vertical leap and covered 10-11 in the broad jump at the NFL Scouting Combine.

At Stanford, Kelly was a four-year starter and two-time All-Pac 12 pick who appeared in 38 games and produced three interceptions and 26 pass breakups. He was invited and participated in the Senior Bowl.

The corresponding roster move was releasing defensive back Innis Gaines. Kelly must pass a physical in Green Bay before he’s added to the 53-man roster officially, but a roster spot still needed to be opened beforehand.

Packers claim TE Ben Sims, S Zayne Anderson off waivers following final cuts

The Packers claimed rookie TE Ben Sims from the Vikings and S Zayne Anderson from the Bills on Wednesday.

There’s a reason why the first 53-man roster is called the “initial” 53-man roster. One day after submitting an initial roster, the Green Bay Packers claimed two players off of waivers: tight end Ben Sims from the Minnesota Vikings and safety Zayne Anderson from the Buffalo Bills.

Claiming Sims and Anderson will require the Packers to make two roster moves to fit them on the 53-man roster.

The Packers must already create a roster spot for re-signing long snapper Matt Orzech. The assumed roster move is placing offensive tackle Luke Tenuta (ankle) on injured reserve. It’s possible another player or two will join Tenuta on injured reserve this week. If not, the Packers will have to release a player who made the 53-man roster on Tuesday.

Sims, who visited Green Bay before the draft, went undrafted out of Baylor in 2023. He played 86 snaps on offense for the Vikings this preseason, including 37 as a run blocker. Sims caught three passes on five targets for 53 yards on 43 routes run. Of his 86 snaps, 70 came as an inline tight end, a position where the Packers need help after losing Tyler Davis to a season-ending knee injury. Sims would be only the third traditional tight end on the rsoter, joining Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft, with Josiah Deguara labeled as a fullback.

Anderson went undrafted out of BYU in 2021. He spent two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, playing 110 special teams snaps over seven games. The Bills signed Anderson in February. He made three special teams tackles for the Bills over three preseason games but was cut on Tuesday. The Packers kept five safeties on the 53-man roster but may want more depth considering Dallin Leavitt is a special teams only player and Anthony Johnson Jr. is a rookie.

Sims and Anderson will need to come to Green Bay and pass physicals before they officially join the 53-man roster.

Packers claim OLB Arron Mosby off waivers from Panthers

The Packers claimed edge rusher Arron Mosby off of waivers from the Panthers on Wednesday.

The Green Bay Packers released outside linebacker La’Darius Hamilton on Wednesday, opening a roster spot to claim outside linebacker Arron Mosby off of waivers from the Carolina Panthers, per the league’s transaction wire.

Mosby went undrafted out of Fresno State in 2022. He signed with the Carolina Panthers and appeared in three regular-season games as a rookie. He played 35 total snaps: 33 on special teams and two on defense.

The Panthers elevated him once from the practice squad for a game and twice signed him to the active roster.

Coming out of Fresno State, Mosby ran the 40-yard dash in 4.71 seconds but posted an otherwise low Relative Athletic Score at 3.96 out of 10.0. He is light (250) an edge rusher and produced poor agility and jumping numbers.

Mosby played defensive back, off-ball linebacker and edge rusher at Fresno State. Hie was an All-Mountain West pick after producing 15.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks and six forced fumbles as a senior edge rusher.

The Packers may see Mosby as a versatile defender who could be developed at edge rusher or off-ball linebacker. He’s also an experienced special teamer.

Mosby was waived by the Panthers on Tuesday. He will need to pass a physical in Green Bay before he’s signed to the 90-man roster.

The Green Bay Packers claimed rookie offensive tackle DJ Scaife off of waivers from the Miami Dolphins on Tuesday, according to Field Yates of ESPN.

Scaife, an undrafted free agent out of Miami, was released by the Dolphins on May 13 following the team’s rookie minicamp.

Scaife (6-2, 321) played in 61 games and made 52 starts for the Hurricanes. He started games at right guard and right tackle and was a two-time All-ACC selection.

Given his size and athleticism, Scaife is likely an offensive guard prospect for the Packers. As a guard, his Relative Athletic Score (RAS) is 7.49.

Green Bay had an open roster spot after releasing safety James Wiggins on Monday.

Scaife joins Kadeem Telfort and Chuck Filiaga as the three undrafted rookies along the Packers offensive line, where 13 players from last season return.

Former Chiefs OT Geron Christian claimed on waivers by Dolphins

The #Chiefs released OT Geron Christian on Wednesday. On Thursday, he was claimed by the #Dolphins.

The Kansas City Chiefs released OT Geron Christian to make room for Mecole Hardman on the 53-man roster on Wednesday. As we expected, Christian has been claimed by another team that is still in contention for the playoffs.

The Miami Dolphins announced on Thursday that they’d claim Christian off waivers from Kansas City. In a corresponding move, they placed another former Chiefs player on injured reserve — Eric Fisher.

A former third-round draft pick in the 2018 NFL draft by Washington, Christian appeared in just 10 games with Kansas City this season. He played 11 snaps on offense and over 50 snaps on special teams. He had been a healthy scratch since Week 12 when Lucas Niang made his return from the Reserve/PUP list. The year prior in Houston, Christian played 560 snaps at left tackle.

It’s not often that teams see starting-caliber offensive tackles become available this late in the season. The Dolphins took advantage this time around and are poised to profit should they somehow make it through to the AFC playoffs.

Seahawks claim linebacker Nate Evans off waivers on Wednesday

The Seattle Seahawks have claimed linebacker Nate Evans off waivers on Wednesday to add much-needed depth to the position.

Even though they are thin at the position, the Seattle Seahawks didn’t select any linebackers in the 2021 NFL draft but they have added players at the spot on back-to-back days.

On Tuesday Seattle was allocated Aaron Donkor via the NFL International Player Pathway Program and on Wednesday, the Seahawks claimed linebacker Nate Evans following his waiver by the Jaguars.

Evans originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent last year out of UCF and spent the season on Jacksonville’s practice squad. He will now join Donkor, Bobby Wagner, Jordyn Brooks, Cody Barton, and Ben Burr-Kirven on the Seahawks roster.

Seattle will likely add more depth at linebacker during the next wave of free agency.

Ty Johnson claimed by the New York Jets off of waivers

The New York Jets have claimed former Detroit Lions running back Ty Johnson off of waivers.

The New York Jets have claimed former Detroit Lions running back Ty Johnson off of waivers. Johnson was released yesterday in a corresponding move after the Lions activated safety Jayron Kearse from suspension.

This is the second running back selected on Day 3 of the NFL draft that has been claimed off of waivers after the Lions released them this season — the other being Jason Huntley, who was claimed by the Philadelphia Eagles at cut-downs last month.

In 2019, the Lions running backs were banged up and Johnson earned time late in the season, rushing the ball 63 times for 273 yards, and notching 24 receptions for 109-yards on the year.

In 2020, Johnson made the Lions initial 53-man roster out of training camp and looked like he was in a competition for the Lions third running back role with Bo Scarbrough. When Scarbrough was injured, Johnson had the inside edge for less than 24 hours before the team added Adrian Peterson to the roster.

Johnson was relegated to a fourth running back role and was only on the field for five offensive snaps this season, receiving no touches or targets. He did play 24 snaps on special teams in Weeks 1 and 2 but was a healthy scratch in Week 3.

With the Lions’ Peterson, Kerryon Johnson, and D’Andre Swift firmly ahead of Ty Johnson on the depth chart, and Scarbrough eligible to return from injured reserve, the Lions felt comfortable risking him to waivers.

Lions claim DT Albert Huggins off waivers

The Detroit Lions have claimed defensive tackle Albert Huggins off waivers from the Houston Texans.

After releasing wide receiver Geremy Davis this morning, the Detroit Lions have filled their open roster spot by claiming defensive tackle Albert Huggins off waivers from the Houston Texans.

After sitting behind first-round picks Dexter Lawrence and Christian Wilkins at Clemson, Huggins earned playing time due to his ability to eat space and occupy blockers for linebackers. He’s not much of a penetrator, but there are building blocks in place for overall development.

After going undrafted in 2019, Huggins was a priority free agent target of the Texans and his first year in the NFL was full of travel but to a lot of the same places.

He landed on the Texans practice squad to start the season, but after two days, he was signed off the squad by the Philadelphia Eagles. After four games on the Eagles roster (three tackles recorded), he was released and claimed off of waivers by the New England Patriots. He would only last a week in Foxborough, and returned to Philadelphia, eventually earning a reserve/futures contract. the Eagles waived him in July, where he was claimed by the Texans for his second stint in Houston. Huggins was released yesterday and claimed by the Lions today.

Quite a journey for the young defensive tackle, but stops in New England and Houston — who run a similar scheme to the Lions — illustrate why the Lions would be interested in him.

With less than a week before roster cutdowns, Huggins has an extremely difficult path to the Lions roster, making this look more like a tryout for the practice squad as the Lions are looking for interior depth on the defensive line.

Former Lions WR Travis Fulgham claimed by rival Packers

The Detroit Lions released wide receiver Travis Fulgham on Sunday in an effort to get down to 80-players and he was claimed off waivers by division rival Green Bay Packers.

In an effort to get down to 80-players, the Detroit Lions released wide receiver Travis Fulgham on Sunday and he was claimed off waivers by division rival Green Bay Packers.

Entering the offseason, the Packers had a glaring need at receiver and they failed to add weapons at the position. Their biggest move at receiver was signing former Michigan Wolverine Devin Funchess in free agency but he elected to opt-out of the 2020 season, leaving them with a hole in the starting lineup.

The Packers do return five of their six rostered receivers from last season — losing Geronimo Allison to the Lions in free agency — and there is a real opportunity for Fulgham to crack the 53-man roster in Green Bay. With no preseason, it’s an uphill battle, but Fulgham has the potential to land a role in Green Bay.

Of note, the other four players released at the same time as Fulgham — wide receiver Chris Lacy, guard Joshua Garnett, defensive lineman Jonathan Wynn, and linebacker Christian Sam — all passed through waiver unclaimed.
