Hometown heroes: With nod to Houston’s hoops history, Rockets unveil 2023-24 City uniforms

With a clear reference to Houston’s distinct basketball history and culture, the #Rockets officially unveiled their 2023-24 City uniforms.

On Thursday, Nov. 2, the Houston Rockets unveiled their Nike NBA City Edition uniforms for the 2023-24 regular season.

These City Edition uniforms are a part of the overarching Hometown Heroes storyline developed to celebrate NBA teams’ unique connection to their respective cities.

In the announcement, the team said it plans to amplify the storyline through Hakeem “The Dream” Olajuwon, Clyde “The Glide” Drexler, and show how their explosive, high-flying on-court performances carved out a place in basketball culture for the City of Houston.

The Rockets will wear these uniforms for 13 specially designated Hometown Heroes games throughout the season at Toyota Center. For each Hometown Heroes night, the Rockets will recognize individuals who make a positive impact in the City of Houston and its surrounding communities.

Here’s a look at the uniforms and further details.

Rockets to showcase new in-season tournament court, updated 2023-24 City jerseys

The #Rockets will have a custom court at Toyota Center for in-season tournament games in November, and it appears to tie in with their new 2023-24 City jerseys.

For the 2023-24 season, the Houston Rockets will have new City Edition jerseys and a custom court at Toyota Center, which will be used for home games in the NBA’s new in-season tournament.

The splashy court, which is largely red with a blue stripe down the middle, features the unique “H-Town” font and branding that will also accompany this season’s City Edition uniforms.

After two years of wearing pinstriped blue City Edition uniform sets — in homage to the mid-to-late 1990s era of the Rockets — this year’s set is primarily white and red and appears to be in tribute to the “Phi Slama Jama” era at the University of Houston.

That era was defined by a pair of future Rockets and eventual Hall of Famers, Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler. Tilman Fertitta, who now owns the Rockets, has extensive ties to the school, as well.

As of Monday, Oct. 30, here’s a look what we’ve learned to date of the franchise’s new 2023-24 court and threads.

Check out this concept art for a ‘City Edition’ Saints uniform set

Check out this concept art for a ‘City Edition’ New Orleans Saints uniform set, created by @DubyaGFX:

Major league basketball and baseball teams have rolled out alternate uniforms to better connect with their home communities, so when will the NFL join them? The New Orleans Saints have already introduced their wildly popular “Color Rush” jersey set and debuted controversial alternate helmets, but this concept art for “City Edition” uniforms from Dubya Design’s Jonah Ward is a great step in the right direction.

Pairing black jerseys with matching pants and a clean gold helmet, Ward took influence from some of New Orleans’ best-known iconography to design the new kit.

Ward writes, “Paying homage to French architecture with the sleeves, a subtle nod to (Mardi Gras) in the sleeve pattern, trolley fonts for the numbers, ‘The Big Easy’ in a Vintage French-esque font, the 3 fleurs in the collar mimic the city flag.”

It’s a great look. The detailing along the sleeves recalls the ornate wrought-iron railing you’ll see on balconies throughout the French Quarter, and most critically the gold is actually, well, gold — not the mismatched khaki tones you’ll see in some Saints uniforms. Ward’s choice of font is a close match to the iconic streetcar signage found in the city.

There’s also a great use for the fan-favorite Louisiana state patch the Saints have used before, which Ward placed on the helmet: “I took the Saints New Orleans outline logo from their past, replaced their fleur with the City Flag Fleur, and inverted the state to black. The stripe is a (Mardi Gras) pattern.”

What do you think? As the NFL continues to evaluate its options and make every game more memorable by introducing alternate helmets, jerseys, and international venues, we could see something very close to this concept emerge someday. Would you wear this jersey or put this helmet up on a shelf?

Brooklyn Nets release City Edition Uniforms for 2023-2024 season

The Brooklyn Nets have changed things up for the 2023-2024 NBA season starting with their City Edition uniforms.

The Brooklyn Nets recently tweeted pictures of the City Edition uniforms they will be wearing for the 2023-2024 NBA season. The uniforms were created by KAWS, an American artists whose full name is Brian Donnelly. As you can see, the jerseys have some color to them similar to what you would see on murals with the way that the color schemes are shaped.

For anyone who has watched the Nets this season, they will notice that the City Edition for next season are completely different from the City Edition uniforms used for this season. The Statement Edition uniforms for this season were essentially all black and had a simple, solid design all the way through.

Looking forward to the 2023-2024 season, it seems that Nets fans are split on the new take on the uniforms. Some love it for its colorful and splashy design while some compare it to paint being thrown onto a canvas. Whatever the take is, it looks like Brooklyn is changing things up for next season.

PHOTOS/VIDEOS: OKC Thunder unveil 2022-23 City Edition uniforms

Here are photos and videos about the new OKC Thunder City Edition uniform.

The Oklahoma City Thunder revealed their 2022-23 City Edition uniforms on Thursday. The Thunder will debut the uniform on Friday, Nov. 11 against the Toronto Raptors.

Former Thunder player Desmond Mason helped create the design and explained its origins in a video provided by the team.

“The City Edition uniform honors Oklahomans at their core,” said Brian Byrnes, the Thunder’s senior vice president of Sales and Marketing. “Whether an Oklahoman by birth or choice, we are inspired to believe work conquers all. We are a people who are always pushing onward and striving for better. The colors and design of this uniform are a tribute to our foundation, the ground we all walk on and the qualities we all share, including selfless service to our community and fellow citizens.”

The Thunder provided photos and videos of the uniform reveal which includes reactions from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Josh Giddey, Jaylin Williams and Lindy Waters III.

All material provided can be seen below.

Houston Rockets jersey, uniform combinations for 2022-23 NBA season

The #Rockets will wear their red Icon Edition jerseys 30 times; white Association in 23 games; black Statement in 16 games; blue City in seven games; and green-and-yellow Classic in six.

With the 2022-23 Hardwood Classic jerseys now revealed, here’s a look at the five Nike uniform editions that will be worn by the Houston Rockets this season. The year-long schedule for which set will be worn for each game is available now at NBA LockerVision.

In all, the Rockets will have five uniform sets this season: the red Icon, white Association, black Statement, blue City, and the green-and-yellow Hardwood Classic, as a throwback to the franchise’s original San Diego days. For a second straight year, Houston will not release an Earned Edition jersey this season, since those are reserved for teams that made the NBA playoffs in the previous season.

As in 2021-22, the blue City Edition set includes a customized blue court to match. The City uniforms will be worn 12 times, all for home games at Toyota Center (which enables the matching court).

All of the uniforms feature branding from Credit Karma Money, which is Houston’s jersey patch sponsor. Here’s a look at the five 2022-23 uniforms, which can be purchased at RocketsShop.com.

For 2022-23 season, Rockets unveil new Classic uniforms from San Diego days

The Rockets will have five jerseys for the 2022-23 season: red Icon, white Associaton, black Statement, blue City, and a green-and-gold Classic uniform from their San Diego days.

You can take the Rockets out of San Diego, but apparently you can’t take San Diego completely out of the Rockets.

San Diego, of course, is where the Rockets played the first four years of their franchise existence (1967-71) before moving to Houston in 1971. That’s where they’ve played for more than 50 years since.

Now, in the NBA’s 2022-23 season, the Rockets will honor their San Diego days with a special Hardwood Classic uniform via the league’s jersey agreement with Nike. It will be the first time Houston has had a Classic jersey since the 2019-20 season, in which they honored the 25th anniversary of their most recent championship season with a throwback jersey designed to replicate what they wore in 1994-95.

“History propels us forward,” the team’s video announcement says.

With the announcement, the Rockets are now set to rotate between five uniform sets for the 2022-23 season. Those are the red Icon edition; white Associaton; black Statement; blue City; and the newly released green-and-gold Classic jerseys to represent San Diego.

On each edition, the Rockets will honor their Credit Karma Money jersey patch sponsorship agreement. However, their 2022 summer league uniforms and Wednesday’s Classic Edition reveal suggests that those patches will be slightly modified for the upcoming season.

The NBA will release its uniform schedule — i.e. what jerseys will be worn for what games — closer to the start of the 2022-23 campaign in October. For now, scroll on for a look at each of the five jerseys.
