Cincinnati vs Tulsa Game Preview

Why Cincinnati Will Win

The pass defense is good enough.

It might not have the NFL-caliber stars of last year’s secondary, but this year’s Bearcat group have been terrific so far.

Indiana’s Conner Bazelak threw for 280 yards and two scores last week in the 45-24 UC win, but he only hit 47% of his passes. So far this year, KJ Jefferson of Arkansas is the only quarterback able to complete more than half of his throws against the D.

On the other side, the Tulsa defense as been good, but it doesn’t get enough of a pass rush. Give Ben Bryant time to throw and he’ll go off. He might ed to because …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Tulsa Will Win

Tulsa’s Davis Brin has been great.

Last week was the first blip. Ole Miss was able to keep Brin from going off, but he still threw two touchdown passes in the 35-27 loss. He’s not the most accurate passer around, but he’s bombing away – he led the nation in passing before last week – and he’s going keep on firing.

If he struggles again, the running game is there to help the cause. It was outstanding last week against the Rebels. Overall, the Golden Hurricane have the top offense in the American Athletic Conference, but …

What’s Going To Happen

No, this won’t be the thriller that last year’s 28-20 Cincinnati win was.

Is this going to be a wild shootout? Brin will throw well, but it’ll be Bryant who stands out even if he doesn’t hit 300 yards for a fourth time in five games.

The Bearcat defense will hold up well against the run as the game goes on to keep the very quiet run of strong performances going.

Cincinnati vs Tulsa Game Preview

Why Tulsa Will Win

Does Tulsa have the formula to pull this off?

Cincinnati has been more than fine – the sign of a good team is being able to win games when you don’t have the top-shelf effort and performance – but something isn’t going quite right if you’re struggling to get by Navy and Tulane.

Tulsa has hardly been perfect, and this isn’t nearly the same type of team as the 2020 version that pushed the Bearcats so hard in the AAC Championship, but the ground game has been good at times over the last month, the downfield passing game is dangerous, and there’s no pressure.

The heat is all on the other side. Cincinnati can’t just win this game, it has to annihilate the Golden Hurricane to get more respect in the College Football Playoff world. The team is going to press.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Cincinnati Will Win

No, we’re not supposed to do Aaron Rodgers bits right now, but …

R-E-L-A-X.

No, Cincinnati wasn’t good enough against Tulsa, and it sure as shoot should’ve been better against Navy, but everything is more than fine.

The running game needs to get nasty again after two weeks off, but Tulsa is decent against the run – it’s okay. The methodical Bearcat passing attack can balance things out.

The Bearcat secondary has been a rock all year – only Indiana and Notre Dame have been able to hit 200 yards – and Tulsa passing game isn’t consistent enough and it’s not efficient.

There will be takeaways to be had.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

It seems like there are two ways this could go.

Either Cincinnati is starting to play with the weight of the College Football Playoff world on its shoulders, and it’s not doing what it’s supposed to, or it’s about to come out and put up one of its better performances of the season.

Tulsa isn’t bad enough to let this get out of control, but it will make just enough mistakes to let the Bearcats take over.

It’ll be another one of those games.

The final score will be fine, and there won’t be any real danger at home, but it won’t be quite as pretty as it might need to be. Give a decent Tulsa team a little credit for that.

Why Cincinnati Will Win

It’s not beautiful, but the Bearcats are doing what they’re supposed to over the first three games of the season.

Play great defense, control the clock, get the ground game going enough to be okay, and methodically take down wins.

The Bearcats are outstanding at converting on third downs; Tulsa isn’t.

They’re better at controlling the tempo and they’re going to be able to grind the game down to its level. Tulsa defense has been okay, but has to rely on takeaways – it came up with five in the first two games.

However …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Tulsa Will Win

Cincinnati has had a few issues with turnovers, giving it up seven times in the first three games including four in the win over USF.

The Golden Hurricane defense might not be a brick wall, but it’s amazing at getting into the backfield, screwing up Oklahoma State with 14 tackles for loss and generating ten against UCF. The UC offensive line might be strong, but it’s about to get hit from all sides.

Tulsa’s secondary has been fine, the run defense has been great, and the offense has been okay considering the competition in the first two games. And …

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

If you’re good enough to beat UCF on the road, you’re good enough to at least throw a hell of a scare into a Cincinnati team that doesn’t usually put up enough points to put games away early

Tulsa is dangerous, it has the defense to be a bother, and this should be a low-scoring battle that comes down to who can control the lines. Cincinnati should do a better job of it – the defense is about to rise up – but it’s going to be the antithesis to all the high-powered shootouts happening throughout college football.
