Bengals sound ready to ignore free agency, trades again despite injuries

The Bengals don’t seem like a team looking for outside help at all.

Cincinnati Bengals fans will feel a sense of deja vu with this one — don’t expect the team to get active in free agency or via trades despite roster issues.

After a 1-3 start at least partially fueled by major injuries along the entirety of the defensive line, the Bengals front office, led by director of player personnel Duke Tobin, seems more than happy to just wait on their own guys to get back.

It’s a line of thought exemplified no better than this quick summary from  The Athletic’s Paul Dehner Jr. recently: “There’s always a chance the perfect storm comes together, but the eyes will be on the development — and, more importantly, health — of the current players providing the solution.”

The only perfect storm Bengals fans can hope for is better health that leads to production.

Things have moved in that direction recently, at least. B.J. Hill sounds like he’s nearing a return. Myles Murphy and third-rounder McKinnley Jackson are back practicing. And second-rounder Kris Jenkins Jr. sounds headed for an expanded role.

In fact, the only guy who might not be back to a massive snap count anytime soon is Sheldon Rankins, given the latest on his injuries.

Still, fans can be forgiven for feeling some frustration here. The lack of an effective pass-rusher after Trey Hendrickson was an obvious weakness. Banking on a pair of rookies to be primary backups behind Rankins and Hill — after losing DJ Reader, of all players — was a super-risky gamble.

Now, the Bengals are gambling again — by likely not gambling at all. By the time the early November NFL trade deadline arrives, the team is hoping that inaction and sticking to the risky plan lets this seem like a speedbump and the season hasn’t been lost because of it.

Bengals sound hyped for an underrated addition to the practice squad

Bengals personnel make it sound like this rookie has a bright future.

The biggest — literally — addition to the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad recently is a player that team personnel would have drafted this year, if the board had fallen that way.

Rookie defensive lineman Justin Rogers was one of four outside players the Bengals signed to the practice squad after final cuts and the waiver wire.

Rogers, a 6’3″, 335-pound first-year player out of Auburn, is a guy Bengals personnel were seemingly surprised to see available after leaguewide cuts, based on comments made to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com:

SCOUT’s TAKE: We had him in here on a visit and got to know him. Big nose tackle. Strong and powerful. Plays stout in the run game. He’s a guy we liked in the draft. We don’t have a lot of those big nose tackle body types. He can take up blocks. He’s got some size and length and he can collapse the pocket. Like the Cowboys, we thought he was draftable.

Rogers might be a guy they develop over the long-term to play a bigger role. Right now, he slots outside the active roster and behind the likes of Jay Tufele.

But with rookie McKinnley Jackson dealing with an injury and fellow rookie Kris Jenkins Jr. developing on the fly in the rotation, it only makes sense the team kept tabs on Rogers.

Bengals make roster move with Tanner Hudson, sign free agent

The Bengals make roster moves.

The Cincinnati Bengals didn’t make any moves at the NFL trade deadline, yet made two notable ones the day after that deadline passed.

Wednesday, the team announced it elevated tight end Tanner Hudson from the practice squad to the 53-man roster and signed free agent linebacker Clay Johnston to the practice squad.

Hudson was a mini-breakout over the summer who has been called up multiple times to the active roster for game days. His role could increase if starter Irv Smith continues to struggle.

Johnston will be a familiar name for fans too, as he’s been a part of the team in the past and played a key role on special teams — never mind a certain key playoff tackle. His addition would seem to hint that Akeem Davis-Gaither could continue to miss time with the injury that has so far derailed his season.

Bengals 53-man roster, practice squad by jersey number ahead of Week 9

A look at the Bengals roster before a primetime showdown vs. Bills.

The Cincinnati Bengals enter Week 9 with a stacked 53-man roster that is mostly healthy and a quality practice squad with plenty of players capable of coming up and helping in a pinch.

Good thing, too, because Week 9 is a “Sunday Night Football” showdown against the Buffalo Bills, a rematch of the two games they played last year and a game with direct AFC playoff seeding implications.

A good roster doesn’t mean the team shouldn’t look to make an upgrade at the NFL trade deadline, though, so we put together a primer for that, too.

Here’s a look at the Bengals 53-man roster and practice squad by jersey number.
