Dolphins 2021 midseason awards: Team MVP? Most improved?

We’re 10 weeks in, so let’s hand out some awards.

The third season of the Brian Flores era in Miami hasn’t gone the way that many hoped. The Dolphins have struggled for a majority of the season, losing seven straight before winning their last two to land in third place in the AFC East with a 3-7 record through 10 weeks.

Miami’s schedule isn’t necessarily the most difficult, but they haven’t shown enough consistency for the fans and media to buy in on them beating teams that they should.

While most things have been negative around Hard Rock Stadium for a majority of the season, it’s still important to reflect on the first 10 weeks and talk about those who have shined.

These are the Dolphins’ midseason award winners.

These are the 6 highest-graded Dolphins by PFF through Week 8

There are a couple of surprises on the list.

As the Miami Dolphins get ready for their Week 9 matchup with the Houston Texans, there’s a pretty large sample size to evaluate the play of the team. Miami’s 1-7 record would seem to indicate that the team isn’t very talented, but there have been some impressive performances through the first eight games.

While some players have made game-changing plays, sometimes the guys who have the best seasons are those whose numbers don’t jump off the official stat sheet. Those guys who impact the play but don’t register sacks are the ones to come to mind first, and that’s exactly what we see from this list from Pro Football Focus of the Dolphins’ top performers through Week 8.

Emmanuel Ogbah and Christian Wilkins are both having great seasons, but they have only recorded 2.5 sacks. They are pressuring the quarterback, clogging lanes, and getting their hands on balls. Zach Sieler doesn’t get the playing time that the other two do, but he’s been impactful in his role.

Tua Tagovailoa being the fourth-ranked player in Miami is concerning considering his 73.0 grade. That’s good for 22nd in the NFL for quarterbacks. It’s not exactly ideal.

DeVante Parker and John Jenkins round out the list. Both players haven’t played all that much with Parker playing in just five games due to his hamstring, and John Jenkins stepping up in five himself mostly to fill in for Raekwon Davis.

Lawrence gets the last laugh even after Wilkins’ shenanigans

During the Jacksonville Jaguars’ game against the Miami Dolphins in London on Sunday, former Clemson defensive lineman Christian Wilkins got a strip-sack on his former Tiger teammate Trevor Lawrence to force a turnover in the third quarter.

Lawrence, who is close friends with Wilkins, was asked during his media availability with Jacksonville reporters this week what Wilkins said to him after the play.

“A lot of stuff. I don’t even remember,” Lawrence said, smiling. “He kept taking my towel. That was the main thing. He took like three of my towels. I tried to tell the ref on him, but he never saw him.”

Lawrence and the Jags went on to defeat Wilkins and the Dolphins, 23-20, on a game-winning field goal as time expired in the contest.

“I saw him after the game, gave him my jersey and all that,” Lawrence said of Wilkins. “So, it was good.”

“But I’m definitely glad we pulled that one out,” Lawrence added with a big smile. “I wouldn’t have heard the end of that for a while.”

WATCH: Christian Wilkins strip-sacks former teammate Trevor Lawrence

Miami finally forced a turnover.

The Miami Dolphins haven’t had many takeaways through the early part of 2021 which they were great at doing last season. However, in the third quarter of the Week 6 matchup with the Jaguars, they finally got one.

Defensive lineman Christian Wilkins came off the right guard and stripped his former Clemson teammate Trevor Lawrence, and the ball fell to Zach Sieler.

The turnover might not have catapulted Miami’s offense, but it was nice to see one of their defensive talents step up and make a potentially game-changing play.

Wilkins will probably have bragging rights over Lawrence on that play for a long time.

Well Wilkins will certainly be talking some trash after this takeaway from Lawrence.  Jacksonville was driving towards another score with a 17-13 lead when Wilkins forced the turnover.

Trevor Lawrence excited to face former Clemson teammate Christian Wilkins in International series

Trevor Lawrence and Christian Wilkins were key pieces on Clemson’s 2018 roster, and now they will be battling each other in the NFL Sunday.

While the Jacksonville Jaguars have yet to win their first game, a win could be coming soon as quarterback Trevor Lawrence is playing better by the week. He could be due for another solid game in London against the Miami Dolphins, who’ve struggled defensively and currently rank 26th against the pass and are 30th overall.

However, one player who could be an issue for Lawrence and the Jags’ offense is his former Clemson teammate in Christian Wilkins, who won a championship with Lawrence when the No. 1 overall pick was a freshman. When asked about reuniting with Wilkins, who was one of the leaders for the 2018 Clemson Tigers, Lawrence said he was excited to face the young defensive tackle who he spoke with about the international series this offseason.

“Christian [Wilkins], that’s my guy,” Lawrence said. “I played with him obviously my freshman year. He’s a character, never met anybody like him. He’s different. He’s awesome though, one of my favorite people. It sucks playing against him. He’s so annoying, so I’m already ready for that, but [he’s] a great player. Obviously, [I] went against him in practice my whole freshman year. It’s like him and [former Clemson DE] Clelin [Ferrell] and [former Clemson DE] Austin Bryant and [former Clemson DT] Dexter Lawrence, all these guys on the d-line just bullying me as a freshman in practice, hitting the ball out of my hand every second. That’s my memory, but Christian’s a great guy. I’m really excited to play him.”

With Wilkins being one of the better players for the Dolphins’ defense, Lawrence could see a lot of the third-year defensive tackle Sunday as the Dolphins will look to shut down the run. Wilkins will enter Sunday’s game with a Pro Football Focus grade of 79.1 (74.0 as a run defender), which could mean his battles with the Jags’ interior linemen like Tyler Shatley (also a former Clemson player) will ultimately be a big factor in the game.

The Jags’ chances to make the postseason feel slim at this point, but if that is the hope, they can’t lose this game against a Dolphins team that may be as beatable as any remaining on their schedule. The Dolphins, who have just one mark in the win column likely feel the same way, so Sunday’s game is one where fans could see the best of both Lawrence and Wilkins.

Trevor Lawrence is getting ready to face one of his former Clemson teammates in an NFL game this weekend.

Lawrence and Christian Wilkins will be on the same field again Sunday when Lawrence’s Jacksonville Jaguars meet Wilkins’ Miami Dolphins in London for a Week 6 tilt at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Lawrence met with the media Wednesday and talked about the matchup with Wilkins, joking that the former Tiger D-lineman is “so annoying” but adding that “you won’t meet a better guy.”

“Christian, that’s my guy,” Lawrence said, via a video posted on Twitter by First Coast News sports anchor/reporter Mia O’Brien (see below). “I played with him obviously my freshman year. He’s a character. Never met anybody like him. He’s different. He’s awesome, though. One of my favorite people. It sucks playing against him. He’s so annoying, so I’m already ready for that. Like, that’s my memory.

“But no, Christian’s a great guy. I’m really excited to play him. I messaged him in the offseason whenever the schedule came out, and we were talking about playing in London. He’s awesome. You won’t meet a better guy, and I’m excited to see him. But yeah, he’s definitely annoying on the field, so I’m ready for it.”

Kickoff of Sunday’s game between the Jaguars and Dolphins is set for 9:30 a.m. ET.

An NFL coach paid his debts Wednesday after losing a bet with a former Clemson star on his team.

Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores, who played linebacker at Boston College, came out on the losing end of a bet on the Clemson-BC game with former Tiger and current Dolphins defensive lineman Christian Wilkins after the Eagles lost to the Tigers, 19-13, at Death Valley on Oct. 2.

Flores showed up at his press conference Wednesday wearing a Clemson T-shirt.

“Yeah, we had a wager,” Flores said of his bet with Wilkins. “I pay my debts.”
