Browns waive CB Chris Westry

The Browns have moved on from a depth cornerback

We still have about a week until cutdown day officially arrives for the Cleveland Browns, but they have waived one already. Cornerback Chris Westry was playing late into the fourth quarter of games for the Browns but will now be looking for a new home after being waived.

This now puts the Browns’ roster at 89 players. They can still add one more to get the roster back up to 90, so expect a subsequent move.

After the Cleveland Browns landed Za’Darius Smith in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings, they then cut two players to make space for him. This did, however, leave an open roster spot that the Browns have now filled. The Browns have now added former Baltimore Ravens cornerback Chris Westry to round out their 90-man training camp roster.

Westry is listed as a massive 6-foot-4 and 199 pounds but has not appeared in a game since 2021 (where he started two games for the Ravens). He is nothing more than a camp body at this point but has a chance to compete for a spot near the bottom of the 53-man roster.

Colts work out 5 TEs after Andrew Ogletree’s injury

The Colts worked out 5 TEs and a CB on Friday.

Following the unfortunate news that rookie tight end Andrew Ogletree will miss his entire rookie season due to a torn ACL, the Indianapolis Colts worked out a quintet of tight ends, along with a cornerback, on Friday.

The Colts are still likely to keep just three tight ends on the roster following Ogletree’s injury, but it’s wise to keep an eye on the options available on the market.

Here are the five tight ends and one cornerback the Colts worked out on Friday, according to the league’s transaction wire:

Panthers waive 5 players following preseason opener

The Panthers waived five players ahead of the preseason’s first roster reduction deadline.

The Carolina Panthers will be heading into joint practices with the New England Patriots starting this week. But, unfortunately for a handful of guys, they’ll be doing it with a reduced roster.

Less than 24 hours after the team’s 23-21 win in their preseason opener against the Washington Commanders, the Panthers have waived five players. The departed includes running back Darius Bradwell, tight end Nate Becker, offensive lineman Wyatt Miller, linebacker Kamal Martin and cornerback Chris Westry.

Tuesday marks the summer’s first deadline for cut-downs. Teams must get their rosters down from 90 men to 85 with the second batch (or third if you want to count the all-important Hall of Fame Game) of exhibition contests ahead.

The chopping block will be revisited by the Panthers and the rest of the league two more times before the start of the regular season—once prior to Aug. 23 to get to 80 men and the other prior to Aug. 30 to get to 53.

Former Ravens CB Chris Westry finds new NFL home

Former Ravens cornerback Chris Westry found a new NFL home

The Baltimore Ravens have seen their cornerback depth dwindle over the first two weeks of 2022 free agency. The team moved on from Tavon Young, while Anthony Averett departed for the Las Vegas Raiders. Jimmy Smith still remains a free agent, and now Chris Westry has found himself a new NFL home.

On Monday, it was announced by the Carolina Panthers that Westry would be joining their organization on a one-year deal. He reunites with now-former Baltimore center Bradley Bozeman, who also made his way to Carolina during free agency.

Westry signed a futures deal in 2021 with the Ravens, and ended up starting two games for the team last season due to injuries. He finished the year with 17 total tackles and three passes defended.

Panthers sign former Cowboys, Ravens CB

On Monday, the Panthers added Chris Westry—a 6-foot-4 CB who’s picked up stops with the Cowboys and Ravens over the past three years.

Is Carolina Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer piecing together the Legion of . . . Soon?

The team inked yet another defensive back on Monday morning, adding cornerback Chris Westry into the fold out of free agency. As announced by the Panthers, it’ll be a one-year deal for the 24-year-old.

Westry broke into the NFL as a undrafted free agent with the Dallas Cowboys back in 2019. He’d spend two years in the Lone Star State out of the University of Kentucky, appearing in a pair of games during the 2020 campaign.

The Orange Park, Fla. native then moved on to the Baltimore Ravens upon signing a futures contract on Jan. 18, 2021. After sitting out a good chunk of the season early on due to a torn lateral meniscus, Westry returned in Week 9 and closed out the slate with 17 tackles and three passes defensed.

Westry is now the sixth defensive back to put pen to paper for the Panthers this offseason. He joins fellow corners Donte Jackson and Rashaan Melvin as well as safeties Xavier Woods, Juston Burris and Sean Chandler.

Ravens won’t tender a contract to CB Chris Westry

The Ravens will not tender cornerback Chris Westry a contract, but hope to re-sign him

The Baltimore Ravens have many talented players who are set to enter free agency in the next week. The team will have to make some difficult decisions as to which of their own will stay and which will go.

On Wednesday, Baltimore made one of those touch decisions, as Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic reported that restricted free agent cornerback Chris Westry will not be tendered a contract by the Ravens. Baltimore needed every cornerback on their roster last season due to various injuries as well as COVID, and Westry was one of those players, playing meaningful snaps in multiple big situations.

As Zrebiec notes, the Ravens do want to re-sign the cornerback, and that the representatives for Westry are continuing to have dialogue about a possible contract. More depth in the secondary will do wonders for a team that had to pull players off the practice squad towards the end of the season.

Tendering Westry would have cost the team about $2.5 million, assuming the cornerback signed it. Westry played in a total of six games in 2021, compiling 17 tackles and one tackle for loss.

Ravens continue adding players to Reserve/COVID-19 list, activate one

The Ravens have continued to put players to the Reserve/COVID-19 list, adding two more to the list on Tuesday

The Baltimore Ravens have seen COVID-19 run through their locker room as an extremely rapid pace over the past few weeks. It has impacted the team that they’ve been able to field on a weekly basis, as for example in Week 16 they had over 30 players out due to either an injury or their placement on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

On Tuesday, Baltimore announced that they had added two more players to the Reserve/COVID-19 list in outside linebacker Tyus Bowser and defensive back Ar’Darius Washington. However, in good news the Ravens did activate cornerback Chris Westry from the list, which gives the team some secondary back.

Bowser is a big loss for Baltimore if he can’t play on Sunday in Week 17 against the Los Angeles Rams. He currently leads the team in sacks with six, and has shown the ability to be a high-level player in multiple aspects. Washington is currently on injured reserve with a broken foot.

Ravens announce inactives for Week 13 matchup vs. Steelers

The Ravens released their inactives list for their matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 13

The Baltimore Ravens have been going through injuries ever since before the 2021 NFL season began. Despite that, the team stands at 8-3 and are atop the entire AFC.

Ahead of their Week 13 matchup with the Steelers, Baltimore announced their inactives. Ravens tight end Nick Boyle is inactive today after playing the last few games.  He’s been battling some injuries after coming back from a gruesome knee injury in 2020. It would’ve been nice to have Boyle playing today to give the offensive line some help and to protect Lamar Jackson.

The secondary also needs to step up without cornerback Chris Westry playing, so players like cornerback Marlon Humphrey need to have good games. Cornerback Jimmy Smith coming back can certainly help overcome the loss of Westry.

It’s good to see that Smith as well as defensive lineman Calais Campbell are playing today after missing the last few games with injuries.  That will definitely help out the defense, which has been playing great lately.

The Steelers also announced their inactives, which features cornerback Joe Haden among others.

Bleacher Report names Ravens’ biggest weakness

Bleacher Report identified the Ravens’ biggest weakness

The Baltimore Ravens have put together a 6-3 record through 10 weeks of the 2021 season despite a brutal amount of injuries. They currently lead the AFC North, and will look to continue playing to their strengths over the remainder of the year.

However, like every team, Baltimore has a few weaknesses that they need to shore up in order to play the best football possible. Brett Sobleski of Bleacher Report identified each NFL team’s biggest weakness, and for the Ravens he chose their passing defense. When explaining his decision, Sobleski mentioned multiple games where Baltimore’s pass defense surrendered far too many yards.

“Baltimore surrendered more than 400 passing yards to Las Vegas and Cincinnati, plus 290 passing yards to a Miami team that has failed to reach 200 five different times this season. Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa entered partway through the third quarter and went 8-of-13 for 158 yards.”

Sobleski also mentions the loss of a star cornerback that has potentially contributed to the secondary’s struggles.

“The Ravens cannot expect to rely on late-game heroics and win consistently. That’s going to be a problem, though, against teams that can move the ball through the air. The Ravens lost star cornerback Marcus Peters to a torn ACL before the season and rank 29th in yards per attempt allowed and last in passing yards per game surrendered.”

The Ravens rank in the bottom five of the league in passing yards given up (2,550) and net yards per attempt given up (7.3). Despite having talent such as Marlon Humphrey, Anthony Averett, Chuck Clark and more, the passing defense just hasn’t been able to put it together. Injuries to Peters and DeShon Elliott have had massive impacts, but the team will have to improve in that area if they want to make a deep playoff run.
