Dodgers reacted to Chris Taylor’s scary face-first collision by completely wasting a challenge

What was Dave Roberts thinking?

Dodgers left fielder Chris Taylor had to leave Sunday’s game against the Giants in the eighth inning after he collided face first against the wall attempting to make the catch.

But Dodgers manager Dave Roberts sure had an odd response to the play: He decided to completely waste his challenge.

With two outs in the inning, Mike Yastrzemski drove a fly ball to deep left field. Taylor had to track the ball towards the warning track while battling the sun, and it ended with the ball deflecting off his glove. As he tried to make another attempt at the ball, Taylor’s momentum drove him right into the wall. It was clear he didn’t make the catch. He didn’t even come close.

Taylor came up bloody on the play (presumably from his sunglasses) and left the game.

Yet, the broadcast was stunned when umpire Chris Conroy announced that the Dodgers were challenging the ruling of no catch. In Roberts’ mind, Taylor must have caught the ball on the second effort and lost it after the collision. But we can clearly see that the ball hit the wall before Taylor even had a chance at making the painful second effort. In a 2-0 ballgame, the wasted challenge could have been huge.

The call was quickly confirmed, and fans couldn’t believe Roberts actually challenged the play.

Chris Taylor made some wild history in Game 5 of the NLCS and the Dodgers needed every bit of it

Chris Taylor is forever in baseball history now.

The Dodgers had their backs against the wall going into Game 5 of the NLCS against the Braves and they responded perfectly.

Well, I should say, Chris Taylor responded perfectly. This dude truly had himself a night of nights. We witnessed literally one of the greatest postseason performances ever on Thursday night.

Taylor hit three home runs against the Dodgers in Game 5. Not one. Not two. Three. That just doesn’t happen very often, y’all.

He made plenty of history on his way to leading the Dodgers to their win. He’s just the 12th player in MLB history to hit three homers in a postseason game.

He’s also the only player in MLB history to hit three homers in an elimination game.

The only player. Ever.

This gets even wilder when you realize how Taylor was playing leading up to this explosion.

That’s certainly worth the curtain call he got after heading into the dugout the final time.

Very, very well deserved. Fans were stoked for him.

See every angle and hear every call of Chris Taylor’s epic Wild Card walk-off homer

What a moment!

Chris Taylor was eight for his last 72 at-bats heading into the Wild Card game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

That didn’t matter. With a man on second in the ninth inning at Dodger Stadium, he saw an Alex Reyes pitch coming right over the plate and deposited it into the stands to win the postseason game and send Los Angeles to a series against the longtime rival San Francisco Giants.

So here’s a collection of every angle and call of the dinger we could find, the hit that gave the Dodgers a perfect start to their defense of last year’s World Series title:

Dodgers’ Chris Taylor had an epic 14-pitch at-bat that ended with a bases-clearing double

WOW.

Los Angles Dodgers utility man Chris Taylor hung in during an at-bat that lasted 13 (!) pitches before breaking open the eventual win over the St. Louis Cardinals on No. 14 from relief pitcher Genesis Cabrera.

You’ve got to watch the whole sequence below. Taylor fought off fastballs up high, curveballs at his knees, you name it, before he deposited one into right field and fans went bonkers. It looked exhausting.

But seriously, what an at-bat!

“I knew he had a good fastball with some off-speed stuff in there as well,” Taylor said, via the Los Angeles Times.  “I was trying to keep it short and simple, sort of single him to death, play pepper, not try to do too much. I knew I had been up there for a while. I didn’t realize it was 14 pitches.”

It was. Wow.

Bravo.
