Kansas City Chiefs safety Justin Reid has embraced his leadership role in a young secondary. During Thursday’s press conference, he shared his thoughts on their progression and overcoming all the injuries.

“The way it’s been all year has been the next guy up. We’ve had a constant rotation and have confidence in whoever is on the field. Chris Roland Wallace has been making plays.” said Reid. “Chamarri (Conner), if he is able to make it, he’ll be in there, and he’ll be making some plays for us. Josh Williams comes in and makes plays. Nazeeh Johnson comes in and makes plays. So, it doesn’t matter. Jaden Hicks, Bryan Cook, it doesn’t matter who’s on the field; when you’re on the field, you’re a starter.”

In the first quarter of their Week 15 victory against the Cleveland Browns, Bryan Cook intercepted a deep pass down the middle of the field from Jameis Winston, his second on the season. In the fourth quarter, Trent McDuffie recorded his first career interception, and with 1:26 left in the game, Jaden Hicks intercepted Dorian Thompson-Robinson.

“We have faith in all those guys to come in and perform,” said Reid. We have the record we have, because guys have been able to come in and make plays when we need them to.”

The injuries have sometimes hampered the Chiefs secondary, forcing the depth signing of veteran cornerback Steven Nelson last week.

Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo praises rookie defensive back: ‘He’s earned playing time’

Kansas City #Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo praises rookie Chris Roland-Wallace: ‘He’s earned playing time’ | @EdEastonJr

Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo addressed the media on Thursday, discussing the emergence of rookie defensive back Chris Roland-Wallace after his impressive performance against the San Francisco 49ers last Sunday.

“Listen, C-Ro (Chris Roland-Wallace) is one of those guys that – he came here as a free agent,” said Spagnuolo. “He earned everything he’s gotten right now. He made the team, made the roster, made the 53. He’s earned playing time. I don’t know if you know – (Assistant Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator) Dave (Toub) and I talked every week about trying to get him in there in games. We got him in there last week.”

Roland-Wallace is an undrafted free agent who made the team and took advantage of his opportunity in Week 7. The rookie collected his first interception, much to the delight of his teammates and Spagnuolo.

“I think before Jaylen (Watson) got hurt, I can’t even remember, but we’ve been talking about it a lot,” said Spagnuolo. “I guess what I’m trying to say is he’s kind of earned the right to get some playing time, so you’ll see him in and out of there, and we’re going to have to use him as one guy goes down – other guys, our responsibilities go up so that’ll happen to Chris.”

The Chiefs’ defense is looking for a steady replacement for Jaylen Watson, who was at the cornerback position opposite Trent McDuffie.

Kansas City’s offense struggled against San Francisco’s impressive defensive unit throughout the game, but reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes managed to keep the Chiefs in the lead when it mattered most.

Mahomes ended the game with 154 passing yards on 16 completions, but he threw two interceptions that helped keep the 49ers in the game.

On defense, Kansas City was led by rookie defensive backs Jaden Hicks and Chris Roland-Wallace, who both came down with interceptions against Brock Purdy.

Now 6-0, the Chiefs are the last undefeated team in the NFL ahead of their Week 8 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Stay tuned to see if Kansas City can build on this win as the Chiefs strive to win their third consecutive Super Bowl title this season.

The Kansas City Chiefs have a two-point advantage in their Super Bowl LVIII rematch against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 7.

After a hot start for both teams’ defenses Kansas City needed a game-changing play to keep San Francisco from taking a lead in the second half.

When quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw his second interception of the game in the third quarter, rookie defensive back Chris Roland-Wallace was ready to answer the call to keep Kansas City ahead.

49ers quarterback Brock Purdy drove San Francisco downfield after the Chiefs’ turnover, but threw an interception to Roland-Wallace that gave Kansas City’s offense to extend its lead.

Take a look at this video of Roland-Wallace’s game-altering interception, which was posted to Twitter by the Chiefs’ official account:

If Kansas City’s defense can continue to pressure Purdy and force bad passes, the Chiefs may be able to escape Levi’s Stadium with its undefeated record intact heading into Week 8.
