ESPN analyst says Tar Heels could pull the upset on Clemson if they win out

Following Clemson’s No. 4 ranking in the first installment of the College Football Playoff Committee’s rankings this fall, an ESPN analyst weighed in on the possibility of an ACC upset between the Tigers and the North Carolina Tar Heels.

Chris “The Bear” Fallica expressed his thoughts on the potential for a Tar Heel run during the latter part of the season and a possible upset versus Clemson if the pair meet in the ACC Championship Game on Dec. 3 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.

“They have the loss to Notre Dame, which is obviously going to be a problem,” Fallica said regarding North Carolina. “If they were to run the table with that offense with [Drake] Maye at quarterback, who I think his name is rarely named in the Heisman race, if you compare his numbers to Hendon Hooker, CJ Stroud, Bryce Young and all those guys, he’s right there.”

“Now defensively, they’re No. 115 in the country in defensive efficiency, so that unit has been a liability,” Fallica continued. “They played better in the second half against Pitt and they shut down Izzy [Israel Abanikanda] in that Pitt offense. If they were to win out, we could be in a situation like the year they wound up playing Clemson in that ACC title game with the onside kick (2015), they potentially could have been in the playoff that year. If they’re 12-1 and ACC Champs and they rip through the remainder of these games and beat Clemson, who obviously the committee thinks very highly of, sure why not. I think of all the teams ranked in the teens, they certainly have the biggest upside.”

While Clemson was ranked within the top five in the No. 4 slot, North Carolina was a ways back at No. 17. The Tigers lead the way as the highest-ranked ACC team in Tuesday’s initial rankings with North Carolina (17), Syracuse (20), Wake Forest (21) and NC State (22) also ranked within the CFP Committee’s top 25.

On ESPN’s College GameDay show Saturday morning, the GameDay crew discussed the possibility of three SEC teams making the College Football Playoff.

Chris “The Bear” Fallica thinks that’s a possibility but not a likelihood.

“Possible, but I don’t think so,” he said. “Because you are going to get the Ohio State-Michigan winner in there as well.”

“Clemson is out there. TCU is out there,” Kirk Herbstreit added.

The Bear gave what he sees as the best path to three SEC teams reaching the four-team playoff field.

“The most likely scenario is Georgia beating Tennessee next week and then Alabama beating Georgia (in the SEC Championship Game),” he said.

“And then all hell breaks loose,” Pat McAfee chimed in.

In that scenario, The Bear believes Alabama and Georgia would definitely get into the playoff.

“Then what happens to the team (Tennessee) that had the regular season win (over Alabama),” he wondered.

While multiple SEC teams making the playoff isn’t out of the question, it’s also possible that multiple one-loss teams from the conference could miss out on the playoff, as Rece Davis pointed out.

“The other possibility is this. What if TCU wins out? What if Clemson wins out?” he said. “Then you might have two one-loss SEC teams sitting on the sidelines.”

“If Clemson wins out, Clemson is in,” Desmond Howard added. “If TCU wins out, how can you keep them out?”

ESPN host highlights the frustration of the 2021 season

Just how bad were the Huskers in one-score games last year?

It’s been highlighted repeatedly that the 2021 Nebraska Cornhuskers finished with a 3-9 record and lost all nine games by single digits. Close games were not friendly to the Huskers last year, and a recent stat was recently brought to my attention that highlights just how bad Nebraska has been in one-score games. In recent years, Chris Fallica, also known as The Bear, has become a fixture on ESPN’s College Football.

He stated via social media that since 2018 Nebraska has been “5-18 in games decided by 7 points or fewer and has a -20 TO margin in those games. 0-7 last year with -8 TO margin in those games.” He also notes that Nebraska “outgained their opponents by 26.4 YPG in those seven games last year.”

With a repeat performance of those stats in 2022, Scott Frost will be looking for a new job heading into the 2023 season. Hopefully, the latest additions to the coaching staff will clean those errors up, but only time will tell.

Relive the frustration of the 2021 season below.

ESPN senior writer Heather Dinich then responded to Fallica’s tweet, saying she doesn’t even have the Tigers ranked in her top 10 right now:

‘The Bear’ picks MSU-Rutgers on ESPN’s College GameDay

Chris Fallica includes MSU-Rutgers in his weekly best bets segment on ESPN’s College GameDay — see who he picked.

If you’re a fan of ESPN’s College GameDay then you’re aware of Chris Fallica — aka The Bear — and his weekly best bets where he picks three games against the spread, and this week he included the Spartans in his picks.

Fallica picked Rutgers to cover the 11.5-point spread in today’s matchup, pointing out MSU has been a terrible double-digit favorite in the past. The Bear also went as far to say the Scarlet Knights could win this game outright — that’s not something Spartan fans wanted to hear.

Fallica is 12-6 in his “Big Board” picks so far this season so we’ll see if he’s right again with today’s pick against the Spartans.

Kickoff between the Spartans and Scarlet Knights is scheduled for noon today. The game can be seen on the Big Ten Network.
