Bellator 240 results: Brent Primus grabs first-round finish in Dublin

Former Bellator lightweight champion Brent Primus proved his title credentials with a first-round submission win at the 3Arena, Dublin.

Former Bellator lightweight champion [autotag]Brent Primus[/autotag] was handed a late-notice change of assignment at Bellator 240, but he produced a professional performance to finish [autotag]Chris Bungard[/autotag] and reassert his championship credentials at the 3Arena, Dublin.

Scotland’s Bungard (15-6 MMA, 2-2 BMMA) stepped in at just over three weeks’ notice to face Primus (10-1 MMA, 8-1 BMMA) and looked to catch the former champion cold as he stuffed an early takedown attempt and hammered Primus with a succession of elbows to the head before jumping on a guillotine choke attempt.

Primus managed to extricate himself from the hold before turning the tables on the Scot. He moved to Bungard’s back and attempted to lock up a rear-naked choke. Bungard did well to keep his chin tucked, but Primus’ arm strength proved too much as he forced the Scot to tap to a neck crank at the 1:55 mark of the opening round.

Crosbie edges past Furtado after cagey three-round battle

In the Bellator 240 co-main event, SBG prospect [autotag]Kiefer Crosbie[/autotag] picked up a split-decision victory against Guinea-Bissau’s [autotag]Iamik Furtado[/autotag] after three gritty rounds.

Furtado (6-2 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) started the better of the pair as the debutant stifled an initial charge from Crosbie (8-1 MMA, 4-1 BMMA) and controlled the Irishman against the cage before later hurting him to the body with a solid kick to the midsection. But, after a steady start, Crosbie upped his work rate in the final two minutes of the round as he took Furtado’s back and attacked a rear-naked choke.

The second round saw Furtado come back into the matchup as he edged the striking exchanges, and he hurt Crosbie to the body once again in the final round. But “BDK” would not be denied in his home town as he gritted his teeth and, with the 3Arena crowd cheering his every strike, battled through the pain to finish strongly and claim the split-decision win with scores of 29-28, 28-29, 29-28.

Rawlings edges Kallionidou to grab first Bellator win

“Rowdy” [autotag]Bec Rawlings[/autotag] picked up her first MMA win in almost four years as she defeated [autotag]Elina Kallionidou[/autotag] in their women’s flyweight matchup.

Rawlings (8-9 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) battled all the way to the scorecards with 21-year-old Greek prospect Kallionidou (7-4 MMA, 0-4 BMMA) in a gritty, three-round clash that saw Rawlings use her ground skills to secure scores of  30-27, 30-27 and 29-28 from the three cageside judges.

Rawlings reversed an early Kallionidou takedown attempt and held top position for the majority of the opening round, then repeated the trick in the second, with Kallionidou’s only serious threat coming from a triangle choke attempt, which the Australian smartly escaped.

The grueling action of the first two rounds left Rawlings looking exhausted at the start of the final round, but she had enough left in the tank to halt Kallionidou’s striking attack by taking her down to the canvas. This time it was Kallionidou who had top position, but the Greek fighter was unable to make any headway from inside Rawlings’ guard. Indeed, it was the Australian who carried the greater threat off her back as she came close to locking up an armbar, then a rear-naked choke, as the fight reached the final bell.

Ultimately, it fell to the judges to determine the victor, with Rawlings getting the unanimous decision to secure her first win as a Bellator fighter, and her first MMA victory since March 2016.

Bandejas turns the tables on Mlambo

[autotag]Ricky Bandejas[/autotag] endured a difficult opening round before finally knocking out [autotag]Frans Mlambo[/autotag] in their bantamweight matchup as the South Florida native added the name of another SBG fighter to his list of victims.

Bandejas (13-3 MMA, 3-2 BMMA) was sent to the canvas three times in the opening round as a loose, confident Mlambo (8-5 MMA, 2-1 BMMA) started strongly in Round 1. The third occasion was as a result of a superb three-punch combination that dropped Bandejas, as Mlambo followed his man to the mat, took his back and locked up a rear-naked choke. But Bandejas escaped the hold and came out sharper at the start of the second round.

The American pushed the pace on Mlambo after the restart, and met “The Black Mamba” in the center of the cage as he traded strikes with Mlambo. Then, after Mlambo caught his kick, Bandejas unloaded a flurry of punches that sent the Dublin-based South African face-first into the canvas for a stunning second-round knockout.

Enkamp makes short work of Long

The opening bout on the Bellator 240 main card featured a battle of European welterweights, and it was Sweden’s [autotag]Oliver Enkamp[/autotag] who emerged victorious with a highlight-reel finish of Wales’ [autotag]Lewis Long[/autotag].

The pair locked up almost immediately and Long (17-6 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) looked to grab an early guillotine choke but the Swede quickly escaped. Long secured a solid takedown but, once again, Enkamp (9-2 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) had the answer as the pair returned to the clinch against the cage. Long went for another guillotine and once again Enkamp escaped.

Then, with a visibly confident Long moving forward looking to land punches, Enkamp struck. As Long stepped in to land a looping left hook, Enkamp launched a spectacular spinning backfist, with his forearm connecting across the bridge of Long’s nose, sending the Welshman down to the canvas. A couple of follow-up shots were all referee Dan Miragliotta needed to dive in and stop the fight with 50 seconds of the first round remaining.

Bellator 240 main card results include:

  • Brent Primus def. Chris Bungard via submission (face crank) – Round 1, 1:55
  • Kiefer Crosbie def. Iamik Furtado via split decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29)
  • Bec Rawlings def. Elina Kallionidou via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)
  • Ricky Bandejas def. Frans Mlambo via knockout (punches) – Round 2, 1:25
  • Oliver Enkamp def. Lewis Long via knockout (spinning backfist) – Round 1, 4:10

Chris Bungard sizes up Brent Primus, plans to ‘shock the world’ on short notice at Bellator 240

Scottish lightweight Chris Bungard plans on scoring the biggest win of his career in the biggest fight of his career.

Scottish lightweight [autotag]Chris Bungard[/autotag] has played the role of spoiler before, and he’s more than happy to step in on short notice and do it again in the main event of Bellator 240 in Dublin.

Bungard (15-5 MMA, 2-1 BMMA) will step in on just two weeks’ notice to face former lightweight champion Brent Primus at 3Arena on Saturday, and he said he’s ready to spring another shock inside the cage.

Bungard’s promotional debut saw him halt the momentum of England’s former two-division BAMMA champion Terry Brazier as he upset the form book and finished the Englishman via rear-naked choke in just 126 seconds at Bellator Europe 1 in February 2019. Now the 31-year-old says he’s looking to do the same again against an even more highly regarded opponent.

“Obviously Brent’s a much higher quality guy than Terry, he’s very well known,” Bungard told MMA Junkie during media day in Dublin. “They say the Americans are a higher caliber, but I think they’re a bit overrated, to be fair. They’re just men at the end of the day. We’re two guys going at it, and yes, he has his skillset, but I see ways to beat him. I think I’m going to shock the world one more time.”

Despite his fighting moniker of “The Bad Guy,” Bungard is likely to receive the lion’s share of support from the Dublin crowd on fight night. A lifelong fan of Glasgow soccer team Celtic Football Club, Bungard says his close ties with the club mean he has an instant connection with the Irish fans.

“There are obvious ties with Celtic Football Club, my favorite team in the world, which was formed in 1887 to feed the Irish immigrants, the hungry homeless children. So that’s where the Irish ties are from, with Celtic,” Bungard said. “And when I walk out with my Celtic top on, I’ll feel like one of their own. I thrive off the walk-ins, the crowd, the big arenas. That’s where I’m at my best.”

[lawrence-related id=490636,491726,491876]

Since signing with Bellator, Bungard’s performances have taken a noticeable step up, with submission wins over Brazier and Benjamin Brander sandwiching a closely contested decision loss to English veteran Charlie Leary. The Scot says fighting on the big stage has inspired him to produce bigger performances.

“I just think it’s where I belong,” Bungard said. “I needed that chance fighting under the big lights in the big promotions. Bellator took that chance on me, and I’m repaying them. I’m clear that I’ll fight any guy they want and take the hard fights when they need, and I promote them well. I’m always promoting Bellator in a positive way, and I’ve got a good fanbase. I think they like me, and I’m obviously happy to be here. I think I’ll be here for a good few years to come.”

During his Bellator tenure, Bungard says he hopes the promotion will pull the trigger on a debut event in Scotland, where he says the fans will deliver a memorable atmosphere at the spectacular Hydro Arena in Glasgow.

“Oh man, that would be nuts,” he said. “I think they need to give it a chance. I know I could sell that place out. People think Scotland’s not marketable when it is. The UFC sold out pretty quick both times and got the ‘Crowd of the Year’ on Ariel Helwani’s show. They just need to take that chance.

“My fans travel to watch me in London, in Newcastle and here in Dublin, but imagine if they can just walk to the arena. They’ll come in their thousands. What a night that would be. What an atmosphere that would be.”

But before he can turn his attention to future fights, Bungard has to take on the formidable challenge posed by Primus (9-1 MMA, 7-1 BMMA). Bungard admits his opponent is a strong athlete but said that his own strengths are being underestimated.

“Honestly, he’s a great athlete. Solid on the deck, black belt, good wrestler, heavy strikes. But as I say, they’re overrated because they’re over there and they get the TV screening. We’re just over here doing our thing, but we’re just as good as athletes.

“I think I’m going to make it ugly. It’s going to be a tough fight. If I’m being honest, I think it’s going to be a three-round bloody war. But I would like a wee knee, a wee knee catching him coming in for a TKO finish.”

4 burning questions heading into Bellator Dublin

MMA Junkie’s Simon Head picks out four key storylines to follow through Bellator’s first Euro series event of the year.

Bellator returns to one of the hotbeds of European MMA as Dublin’s 3Arena plays host to the first European Series event of 2020.

Following an injury to main event star James Gallagher, Bellator’s European matchmaker Jude Samuel has shuffled the deck, with Northern Irish women’s MMA pioneer [autotag]Leah McCourt[/autotag] set to take center stage in the biggest fight of her career.

The former IMMAF amateur world champion will headline the reshuffled fight card against Germany’s [autotag]Judith Ruis[/autotag] in a women’s featherweight main event, while a card packed with Irish and British prospects will look to wow the passionate and knowledgable Irish crowd on what is sure to be another wild night in Dublin.

Without further ado, here are four burning questions heading into Bellator Europe 7/Bellator 240.

****

Will ‘The Curse’ be a main-event blessing for the Irish fight fans?

McCourt’s promotion from main card notable to main event star represents a huge jump in exposure for the affable Northern Irish starlet, and the fighter playfully nicknamed “The Curse” is looking to complete a hat-trick of wins at the 3Arena on Feb. 22.

McCourt’s first two appearances inside the Bellator cage both produced stoppage wins, with both fights taking place inside Dublin’s famously atmospheric venue. Now she faces Ruis (6-4 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) looking to make it three in a row in Bellator, and three in a row in the 3Arena.

Ruis will have other plans, of course. The German now faces a monumental occasion on her Bellator debut as she will not only face one of the stars of women’s MMA on this side of the pond, but she’ll have to do it under the glare of the main event spotlight.

It’s a daunting prospect, but she’ll head into the bout with confidence having picked up a pair of first-round submission finishes in her last two bouts prior to being snapped up by Bellator.

It promises to be a night to remember for one of these unexpected main event fighters, but who will get their hand raised at the end of the night? Will McCourt (3-1 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) rise to the occasion on the biggest stage of her career, or will Ruis step in and spoil the party with a dream performance on her debut?

Bellator 240/Bellator Europe 7 pre-event facts: Can Bec Rawlings snap MMA skid?

Check out the key facts and figures about Bellator 240/Bellator Europe 7, which takes place Saturday in Dublin.

Bellator continues a busy weekend on Saturday with a split event showcase at 3Arena in Dublin featuring Bellator 240 and Bellator Europe 7.

The Bellator 240 portion of the card is headlined by former lightweight champion [autotag]Brent Primus[/autotag] (9-1 MMA, 7-1 BMMA) vs. [autotag]Chris Bungard[/autotag] (15-5 MMA, 2-1 BMMA), while the Bellator Europe 7 portion sees Northern Ireland’s [autotag]Leah McCourt[/autotag] (3-1 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) fight [autotag]Judith Ruis[/autotag] (6-4 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) in a women’s featherweight affair.

Bellator 240

Brent Primus

Primus’ five stoppage victories in Bellator lightweight competition are tied for third most in divisional history behind Michael Chandler (nine) and Patricky Freire (nine).

Bungard has earned both of his Bellator victories by first-round submission. He finished both fights by rear-naked choke.
