Why the Chiefs’ new offensive wrinkles could spell trouble for the Chargers

The Chiefs and Chargers face off Thursday night. Here’s why Andy Reid’s new-look offense could be a problem for Brandon Staley.

When the Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Chargers face off on Thursday night to start Week 2 of the 2022 regular season, everybody will be talking about Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert. And with good reason — Mahomes just demolished the Cardinals in Week 1, and the Raiders didn’t have too many answers for Herbert, either. But there are other matchups within the matchups, and things you see on tape as you go along.

Regarding this game, what you want to watch for is the Chiefs’ run game versus the Chargers’ run defense. Two things that did not work well at all last season, and both teams are looking to turn those trends around as quickly as possible.

In their Week 1 rematch against a Raiders team that absolutely blew their run defense out of the ballpark and took them out of the playoffs as a result, the Chargers allowed just 64 yards on 13 carries from Josh Jacobs and Brandon Bolden. Limiting Jacobs (especially) took a specific schematic constraint that worked, and we’ll get into that in a minute, but as well as that went, the Chargers had best be ready for a Chiefs run game that all of a sudden does not at all resemble the gimmick-heavy stuff they were trying to make work last season.

Brandon Staley, the Chargers’ head coach, defensive mastermind, and noted light-box advocate, was asked on Tuesday why the Chiefs are such a great red zone team. His answer really applied to all levels of the field.

“Because you have to defend all five people and the quarterback. Any time all five people are a legitimate threat to do something with the football down there, and you have to account for the quarterback, you’re maximizing your chances of being an outstanding red zone team. They run the football well down there because they can run it, and they can get the RPO version of the game, so they can change the math, even the math out down there. They’re an outstanding screen team. A very, very tough cover. That’s why they’re such a good football team.”

That’s Staley’s challenge. The challenge facing Kansas City head coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is how to best deal with a Chargers team that will understand everything they’re bringing to Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday night.

Here’s how that might look once it’s game time — and why Staley may be outnumbered no matter what he calls.

Chargers’ Keenan Allen unlikely to play vs. Chiefs, Brandon Staley confident in wide receiver room

The Chargers are planning to play without WR Keenan Allen on Thursday night.

The Chargers are expected to be without their top wide receiver when they take on the Chiefs on Thursday.

Keenan Allen suffered a hamstring injury in the second quarter of the season opener against the Raiders and did not return.

On Tuesday, ahead of the matchup with Kansas City, head coach Brandon Staley gave an update and said that “it’s not looking great” for Allen regarding his status.

Before exiting the game, Allen posted four catches for 66 yards.

After Allen left, Los Angeles’ passing offense still managed to be productive – quarterback Justin Herbert finished the game 26-of-34 passing for 279 yards and three touchdowns.

Herbert spread the wealth, connecting with nine different targets. But the pass-catcher who had the most significant impact was DeAndre Carter, who caught three passes for 64 yards and one touchdown.

As it stands, the Chargers have four healthy wide receivers on the roster. Whether or not they will promote one from the practice squad remains to be seen. If they chose to do so, they have three options: Michael Bandy, Jason Moore Jr., and Joe Reed.

“We’re still working through that for the next couple of days. We can decide to go with four wideouts, bring somebody else up in another position, or we could flex a receiver,” Staley said. “We’re still working through the initial stages of the plan, but I do think that we have receivers who are capable of being elevated and performing well for us.”

If Allen is sidelined, Mike Williams and Josh Palmer are expected to step up in place of him. Williams saw just three targets, finishing with two catches for 10 yards, while Palmer posted three catches for five yards on four targets last Sunday.

The Chiefs defense held Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray to just 179 passing yards in Week 1.

Why Los Angeles Chargers Will Win

Kansas City doesn’t care.

Oh it’ll put a football team out there, and it’ll have to play enough starters to have a game, but the main guys aren’t going. Chad Henne will get the start with Patrick Mahomes sitting out, the star receivers aren’t going to play, and with the No. 1 seed all locked up, the Chiefs will get a full two weeks to be able to rest anyone up.

The Chargers pushed the Chiefs into overtime way back in late September when both teams are fully functioning – it was Justin Herbert’s first game – and now the team is on a three-game winning streak with the offense playing well and the defense doing a great job of taking the ball away.

Why Kansas City Chiefs Will Win

The Kansas City backups will try.

It’s a weird situation. If the team sort of needed it, there might be a half-hearted attempt to win this. However, this is audition time for a whole lot to KC players who’ll want to either keep a job of have film for other places.

The Chargers are still having problems running the ball, the KC D will still be strong against the ground game even with a few guys out, and the coaching staff is still going to run things as close to normal – at least trying to without No. 15 under center.

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas City will be surprisingly solid for at least a little while, and then the team will just want to get to resting and relaxing already.

The Chargers will fight hard to close out with a four-game winning streak, the passing game will click just fine at home, and it’ll be a fun win for Los Angeles, if only to finish with seven wins and look solid in a great finishing kick.
