Bears report card: How we graded Chicago in their Week 5 win

We’re grading the Bears following their win against the Raiders, where defense dominated, offense did enough and Cairo Santos was clutch.

The Chicago Bears pulled off an impressive 20-9 upset win against the Las Vegas Raiders, which gave us a glimpse at what this Bears team can be this season.

This was a team win in every sense of the word. The defense dominated one of the NFL’s best offenses holding them to just 9 points, sacking Derek Carr three times and forcing a turnover. The offense did what it had to do to win the game, relying on a heavy dose of the run game and rookie Justin Fields making plays when he needed to. Cairo Santos came up clutch in the kicking game with two big field goals. The result was a convincing win that gives this team some motivation heading into a Week 6 showdown against the Packers.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what we saw during the game and how we graded the Bears in this win.

Khalil Mack gets his revenge against Raiders: ‘He made them regret everything’

Khalil Mack reminded everyone why the Raiders made a mistake in trading him.

While Bears edge rusher Khalil Mack might not admit it, Sunday’s game against the Raiders was surely circled on his calendar. In Mack’s second meeting against his former team, he reminded the Raiders why it was a mistake trading him back in 2018.

In Chicago’s 20-9 upset win, Mack recorded a sack, 8 tackles, including 1 tackle for loss, and 1 QB hit. He also added a sack of Derek Carr on a failed two-point conversion attempt, which technically doesn’t count toward the stat sheet. Through five games, Mack has 5 — technically, 6 — sacks, and he’s proving the critics wrong with a strong start to his 2021 NFL season.

Mack’s performance on Sunday was the revenge game he’s been waiting for, especially after his first meeting against his former team back in 2019, when the Raiders held Mack at bay in a win that seemed to derail Chicago’s promising start to the season.

Bears head coach Matt Nagy pointed back to the flight home following the 2019 loss to the Raiders in London as something that stuck with the team, especially Mack.

‘‘I don’t care what anybody says, you remember that,’’ Nagy said. ‘‘[Mack] was part of that, and he understands that. I think all of our guys . . . it’s the mindset of making sure our guys know that we weren’t coming in here to play; this was going to be a fight. He knew that.

‘‘And so Khalil’s in a leadership role to make sure other guys see how he plays in this moment.’’

While his first game against his former team didn’t go as planned, Mack reminded everyone why the Raiders made a mistake in trading him and why he remains one of the NFL’s most fearsome defenders.

‘‘He made them regret everything,’’ said safety Eddie Jackson. ‘‘Made them regret not wanting to keep him. You know, Mack’s our leader. He’s had games like this. We fuel off that.’’

5 takeaways following Bears’ impressive road win over Raiders

From promise with Justin Fields to Khalil Mack’s revenge, here are our takeaways from the Bears’ hard-fought road win against the Raiders.

It took until Week 5, but the Chicago Bears are finally over .500 and have their first road victory after defeating the Las Vegas Raiders 20-9. Though the arena was technically on the road in Las Vegas, the crowd felt right at home as thousands of Bears fans made their presence known from the the start.

The game itself was a slugfest with both teams trading hard hits and punishing defense, but it was the Bears who took the 14-3 lead going into halftime, thanks to a power running game and clutch passes from quarterback Justin Fields.

In the second half, the defense finished the job as Raiders quarterback Derek Carr struggled with the pass rush and couldn’t find a rhythm with his receivers. Despite a late score, the Bears held on comfortably for the win thanks to all three phases doing their jobs when it mattered most.

As always, there’s a good amount to digest from this game. Here are my takeaways from Sunday’s hard-fought victory.

Bears fans took over Las Vegas in Sunday’s upset win vs. Raiders

Matt Nagy called the Bears crowd at Allegiant Stadium “impactful” in Chicago’s 20-9 upset win against the Raiders.

Bears fans have always been known to travel. But there was something different Sunday in Las Vegas, where the Bears pulled off a 20-9 upset win against the Raiders.

Head coach Matt Nagy called the Bears crowd at Allegiant Stadium “impactful” in the game.

Bears fans made their presence known, and it even felt like a home game at times, where the offense and defense fed off the fans.

“I’m not used to playing away games where you have a crowd that can rival the home crowd,” said tight end Jesper Horsted. “And especially for this game, they were making so much noise, which really disturbs the opposing offense. And you saw a lot of penalties that are caused solely because of that.”

Safety Eddie Jackson added: “It was crazy to really see how our fans travel and come on the road. They helped us a lot. They kept us fired up, kept us pumped up. Just to hear the support out there that we have from the fans, we really appreciate it.”

The Bears gave their traveling fans plenty to cheer about in Las Vegas on Sunday, and their presence was certainly felt. The defense held one of the NFL’s top offenses to just 9 points, sacked Derek Carr three times and seemed to rattle the Raiders offense overall.

While the offense still has plenty to build on, they did enough to help guide the team to a win. Even without David Montgomery, the Bears found success on the ground with Damien Williams and rookie Khalil Herbert. While Justin Fields’ stat line wasn’t flashy, he showed his toughness and ability to make big plays down the stretch.

From Bears coaches and players to opposing fans, there were plenty of people who recognized the impact of Chicago’s fan base on Sunday.

The Chicago Bears defeated the Las Vegas Raiders 20-7 on Sunday, where they played a complete game to pull off the upset.

Chicago’s defense contained one of the NFL’s best offenses, holding them to just 9 points and sacking quarterback Derek Carr three times. The Bears offense did enough to win the game, relying on a healthy dose of the run and rookie quarterback Justin Fields making plays when he had to.

There was plenty to digest from Sunday’s game. Our Bears Wire staff is sharing their immediate reactions to Chicago’s most impressive win of the season to date:

The Bears upset the Raiders 20-9 on Sunday, where players got to celebrate in Club Dub. Check out video here.

The Chicago Bears’ first road win of the season, a 20-9 victory against the Las Vegas Raiders, was the team’s most impressive to date this season.

The Bears defense held the NFL’s ninth-best scoring offense to just 9 points and sacked Raiders quarterback Derek Carr three times, which included Khalil Mack getting to his friend and former teammate twice — although the second one didn’t count on the failed two-point conversion.

Chicago’s offense did just enough in the victory, where running backs Damien Williams and rookie Khalil Herbert combined for 34 carries for 139 rushing yards and a score in place of an injured David Montgomery. Rookie quarterback Justin Fields’ toughness was on display in the win, and he’s now 2-1 as a starter.

The Bears have won three games this season, and we’ve yet to see those Club Dub videos we’ve grown accustomed to in 2018 and 2019. But that doesn’t mean players can’t bring us inside Club Dub, which was rocking following Chicago’s gritty win over Las Vegas.

The Bears currently sit in second place in the NFC North with a 3-2 record, and they’ll face their divisional foes the Packers next Sunday at Soldier Field. If Chicago can find a way to beat their rivals for the first time since 2018, they’ll be in first place in the division.

Bears fans can’t get enough of Justin Fields’ toughness in win vs. Raiders

There’s certainly no question about Justin Fields’ toughness after he took some brutal shots in the Bears’ 20-9 win over the Raiders on Sunday. But this is nothing new for those who watched Fields at Ohio State. In almost eerie fashion Sunday …

There’s certainly no question about Justin Fields’ toughness after he took some brutal shots in the Bears’ 20-9 win over the Raiders on Sunday. But this is nothing new for those who watched Fields at Ohio State.

In almost eerie fashion Sunday against the Raiders, Fields took a hit to the ribs, not unlike the shot to the ribs he took during the 2019 College Football Playoff semifinal against Clemson.

While Fields didn’t go on to throw for five touchdowns against Las Vegas on Sunday, he was able to stick it out against a tough, physical Raiders defense.

But it wasn’t just the shot to the ribs. Fields suffered a hyperextended knee in the second quarter, which kept him out just three plays before he returned to lead his team to victory, with the help of a dominant defense.

“I’ll just say this, that son of a buck is tough,” said head coach Matt Nagy. “He’s tough. He’s proven that.”

In regards to Fields’ hyperextended knee, Nagy and Fields didn’t sound concerned about it. In fact, Fields brushed it off and insisted he’ll be good to go in next Sunday’s showdown against the Packers.

There were plenty of people impressed by Fields’ toughness in this game, where he bounced back from two injuries that would’ve sidelined others. While the Bears need to do a better job of protecting Fields moving forward, it’s hard not to be in awe of the toughness Fields displayed in Sunday’s win.

Studs and duds from Bears’ gritty road win over the Raiders

The Bears had a hard-fought 20-9 win over the Raiders. Here are players who thrived and those few who disappointed in the win.

The Chicago Bears earned their first road victory of the season on Sunday, taking down the Las Vegas Raiders 20-9 in Sin City. It was a hard-fought win from the start as Bears players like Justin Fields took a ton of hits from a tough Raiders defense.

After going down 3-0, it seemed like it would be a long day for the Bears. But they rallied back to score 14 unanswered points in the second quarter, then pulling away thanks to a couple of clutch field goals.

There were quite a few players responsible for the victory, as well some others who thankfully didn’t cost the Bears the game. Here are this week’s studs and duds.

Instant analysis of Bears’ 20-9 win over the Raiders

Khalil Mack finally got his revenge against the Raiders as the Bears pulled off a 20-9 upset to improve to 3-2 on the season.

It took three years, but Khalil Mack finally got his revenge against his former team, and he was a big reason why as the Chicago Bears pulled off an upset against the Las Vegas Raiders with a 20-9 win on Sunday to improve to 3-2 on the season.

As has been the case on many occasions during Matt Nagy’s tenure in Chicago, the defense was the reason why the Bears were able to eke out a victory. They allowed just 3 points through the first 51:41 of the game and held a high-powered Raiders offense to 259 yards and 9 points.

Mack finally had the revenge game everyone was expecting with 1.0 sack – and another on a failed 2-point conversion – and contributed to a pass rush that made it a long afternoon for quarterback Derek Carr, who was sacked three – technically, four, counting the 2-point attempt – times.

Following an impressive outing against the Lions, rookie quarterback Justin Fields didn’t have to do much in his third NFL start – and the first since he was named the permanent starter. Fields completed 12-of-20 passes for 112 yards and one touchdown with a 91.9 passer rating.

Fields was heralded for his toughness, and that was certainly on display in the win. Early in the game, Fields took a shot to the ribs, and he was on the sideline with a trash can beside him. Later in the first half, he appeared to hyperextend his knee, which forced him out for a couple of plays. Andy Dalton saw some snaps before Fields returned to finish the game and lead his team.

The Bears offense goes through the run game, and even without star David Montgomery, Chicago found plenty of success on the ground with running backs Damien Williams and rookie Khalil Herbert, who combined for 139 rushing yards. Herbert led the Bears with 18 carries for 75 yards on the ground, where he finally got to showcase his burst. Williams added 64 yards on the ground, and he had some nice runs. While the Bears will certainly miss Montgomery, who’s been one of the best in the NFL this season, they’re in capable hands with Williams and Herbert.

Now, Chicago stands at 3-2 and in 2nd place in the NFC North heading into a divisional clash with the 4-1 Packers, who were lucky to escape with an overtime win against the Bengals. The Bears are going to need another stout defensive effort and a little more from the offense if they hope to get their first win over Green Bay since 2018.

But for now, the Bears came away with a big win at the start of a difficult six-game stretch through their bye week.
