The Honolulu Blueprint: Keys to a Lions victory over the Bears

The Detroit Lions will look to hand the Chicago Bears a sixth straight loss and this week’s Honolulu Blueprint lays out key areas to win.

The Detroit Lions (4-7) are on the road this week to face their division rival Chicago Bears (5-6), where one game separates the two teams in the division cellar.

After the Lions Thanksgiving slaughter, principal owner Sheila Ford Hamp decided to clean house and fired both Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn. In their stead, Darrell Bevell was named the interim head coach, while the GM duties are made up of a slew of front office personnel.

It’s difficult to anticipate how different the Lions will look this week, but Bevell has said he wants the players to work hard but have fun in the process. On the flip side, mixed signals have gone out about the defense, but it’ll be interesting to see if the issues were mostly due to Patricia or these coordinators should share some of the blame.

The Bears were handed their own massacre on Monday Night Football against the Green Bay Packers, getting pummeled 41-25. Coach Matt Nagy was embarrassed by the performance and expected a whole lot more from the players.

The Bears started hot to begin the season, but they have fallen into the dark abyss, and have dropped their last five games — bringing into question if they are on the verge of purging their coach and GM as well.

It’ll be interesting to see how well the players have responded to the coaching situations this week, and with playoff hopes all but shot, for both teams, this game may determine the rest of their seasons.

Here are the key areas in this week’s Honolulu Blueprint the Lions need to focus on to secure victory.

5 storylines to watch as Bears host the Lions in Week 13

As the Bears prepare to face the Lions, here’s what to watch for in their Week 13 match-up.

The Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions will face off in a match-up where both teams are in desperate need of a win. Chicago is looking to get back on track following an embarrassing 41-25 loss to the Green Bay Packers on national television, which would help break a five-game losing streak.

While the Lions game was one that’s been pegged as an easy win, that’s not necessarily the case with a Bears team that needs to prove it can win a game. The defense will be looking to get back on track following a letdown performance while the offense will attempt to play a consistent four quarters of football.

Here are five storylines to watch as the Bears head into their Week 13 game against the Lions.

Here’s a look at the Bears’ full injury report from Friday’s practice, as well as game designations.

The Chicago Bears released their final injury report ahead of Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions, which included nine players questionable for Week 13.

Two surprising additions to the injury report on Friday were receivers Allen Robinson and Darnell Mooney, who both were listed with knee injuries. Mooney’s was more precautionary, according to Matt Nagy, while Robinson exited practice early with that knee injury.

Behind Enemy Lines: 6 questions with Lions Wire

Before Sunday’s game, we caught up with managing editor Jeff Risdon of Lions Wire to get the scoop on the Bears’ Week 13 opponent.

The Chicago Bears are looking to break a five-game losing streak when they welcome the Detroit Lions to Soldier Field on Sunday. And the Bears might’ve met the the Lions at either the best or worst time after Detroit fired general manager Bob Quinn and head coach Matt Patricia.

With Bears general manager Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy’s futures possibly on the line, this is a game Chicago needs to win to break their losing streak and keep their slim playoff chances alive.

Before the game, we caught up with managing editor Jeff Risdon of Lions Wire to get the scoop on the Bears’ Week 13 opponent.

Here are six questions with Lions Wire:

Bears are hopeful DT Akiem Hicks will be good to go in Week 13

Matt Nagy says Bears DT Akiem Hicks remains day-to-day with a hamstring injury, but he’s hopeful he’ll play vs. Lions.

The Chicago Bears defense is coming off its worst performance of the season, where they allowed 41 points to the Green Bay Packers in a primetime beating.

They certainly missed defensive tackle Akiem Hicks, who suffered a hamstring injury two weeks prior against the Minnesota Vikings. Hicks’ presence in the middle of that defense was noticeably absent, and Aaron Rodgers and the Packers offense attacked the middle of that defense.

Hicks missed practice on Wednesday, and Matt Nagy says he remains day-to-day with that hamstring injury. But Nagy sounds like someone that’s hopeful Hicks will return to the lineup against the Detroit Lions in Week 13.

“I do feel like he’s getting better. He’ll be day-to-day, and I’m hoping that he’ll be able to go.”

The Bears missed Hicks in the run game, where the defense allowed 182 yards on the ground against the Packers, including 163 yards between Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams.

Matt Nagy confirms QB Mitchell Trubisky is definitely starting vs. Lions

After avoiding naming a starting QB for Week 13, Matt Nagy confirmed it’ll be Mitchell Trubisky that gets the starting nod vs. Lions.

Earlier this week, Matt Nagy avoided confirming who would be the starting quarterback when the Chicago Bears host the Detroit Lions on Sunday at Soldier Field.

When asked Monday if Trubisky would be starting, Nagy said, “I don’t see why not,” which didn’t exactly express confidence about his young quarterback.

But on Wednesday, Nagy made it official that it will in fact be Trubisky that gets the starting nod against the Lions.

It’s hard to argue with Trubisky’s track record against the Lions, especially dating back the last three seasons. Since 2018, Trubisky has posted a 4-0 record against Detroit, where he’s had a 69.3 completion percentage with 12 touchdowns and one interception for a 124.4 passer rating.

The last time Trubisky faced the Lions, he led the Bears to a miraculous fourth-quarter comeback where he threw for three touchdowns in the 27-23 win.

We’ll see if Trubisky can keep his streak going against the Lions when the Bears need a win the most.

Bears open as 3.5-point home favorites vs. Lions in Week 13

The Bears will look to break their five-game losing streak with a win over the Lions, who they’re favorites for the first time since Week 2.

[jwplayer boGiTYJc-ThvAeFxT]

The Chicago Bears have lost five straight games, including an embarrassing 41-25 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football, and they’re facing a must-win this week against another divisional foe.

Even despite an epic collapse, where Chicago’s defense let them down for the first time this season, the Bears might not be the biggest disappointment on the field on Sunday when they host the Detroit Lions.

Not that there’s a lot of confidence from Vegas in regards to the Bears. Chicago has opened as 3.5-point home favorites against the Lions, according to BetMGM.

Believe it or not, this is just the second time this season that the Bears have been favored. The only other game they were favored in was a home game against the New York Giants in Week 2. They’ve been underdogs in their other 10 games.

The Bears will be facing a Lions team that just cleaned house by firing head coach Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn after their own 41-25 embarrassing loss. Though, to be fair, those firings had been coming for awhile.

Can Chicago break their five-game losing streak and get the their second win over Detroit this season? Or will the Lions send the Bears to a new low with their sixth straight loss? We’ll see when the Bears and Lions kick things off Sunday at noon CT on FOX.

It sounds like Mitchell Trubisky will be the Bears’ starting QB vs. Lions

Bears HC Matt Nagy won’t name a starting QB, but all signs are pointing to Mitchell Trubisky getting the staring nod in Week 13 vs. Lions.

Following an embarrassing 41-25 loss to the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy was visibly upset with his team’s execution on Sunday night.

While the defense’s sloppy performance was the talk of the Monday presser — where they surrendered 41 points for the first time since 2016 — there was also a focus on the offense, namely the quarterback.

Mitchell Trubisky got his first start since being benched in Week 3. While the offense looked more efficient at times, Trubisky wasn’t without his faults. He committed three turnovers — two interceptions and a fumble returned for a touchdown.

When asked whether Trubisky would be the Bears’ starting quarterback Sunday against the Detroit Lions, Nagy fell short of committing to a starting quarterback. But it sounded like Nagy was leaning towards Trubisky.

“I don’t see why not,” Nagy said, while also not confirming it.

While Nagy remained committed to evaluating Nick Foles’ condition — he’s recovering from a hip injury — it makes sense for the Bears to give Trubisky another chance. The offense was able to move the ball decently at times, and the run game even found success.

And it doesn’t hurt that the Bears will facing the Lions, a team that Trubisky has dominated in his career.

But we’ll wait until Nagy confirms a starter, which could come as soon as Wednesday.
