Freshman CU Buffs WR Chase Sowell enters transfer portal

Freshman Chase Sowell entered the transfer portal following CU’s spring game

Colorado wide receiver Chase Sowell has entered the transfer portal, he announced via Twitter on Sunday.

Sowell played in three games during his freshman season in 2022, catching two passes for 23 yards in a reserve role.

He was a three-star prospect coming out of Atascocita High School in Texas and received offers from Colorado, UTSA, Incarnate Word, Northern Iowa and Sam Houston State throughout his recruitment.

Sowell also has a background in baseball, and it was hinted that he could return to the diamond in the future. We wish all the best to Sowell as he comes to the decision that he feels is best for him in 2023 and beyond, whether in football, baseball or both.

Sowell is one of several Buffs who have entered the transfer portal following the spring game. You can keep up with all the activity by checking out our offseason transfer portal tracker.

Slew of CU Buffs dealing with injuries during Arizona week

The Buffs are a little banged up heading into Arizona

The injury bug is finally starting to hit the Colorado Buffaloes, who at 0-4 obviously don’t need any more problems.

On Monday, head coach Karl Dorrell gave updates on a few key players currently dealing with injuries. First up, running back Alex Fontenot is still down with a chest bruise that he suffered during the Air Force game. He is “probably doubtful” for Saturday’s game against Arizona. Safety Isaiah Lewis and wide receiver Chase Sowell, both of whom got banged up against UCLA, are also unlikely to play in Tucson.

Tight end Brady Russell suffered what looked like a severe ankle injury in the UCLA game, but we received some good news when Dorrell said it was a low-grade sprain. Russell is day-to-day, per Dorrell.

Five standout Buffs from Colorado’s first preseason scrimmage

These five Buffs impressed during CU’s first preseason scrimmage

We got our first look at the Buffs in “game” action on Saturday when they held their first preseason scrimmage at Folsom Field.

Colorado challenged itself for about an hour and a half with all levels of the depth chart getting some action. Both the offense and defense had their moments, albeit under the preseason rule of limited tackling.

Watching the incoming freshmen play was also a treat. Karl Dorrell has shared plenty of praise about the new Buffs and the youngsters lived up to the hype.

In fact, of the five players that impressed me the most, three of them were freshmen:

Colorado receives commitment from Texas WR Chase Sowell

Chase Sowell announced his commitment to Colorado on Tuesday

As National Signing Day looms, the Colorado Buffaloes bolstered their 2022 class on Tuesday with a wide receiver from Humble, Texas.

Chase Sowell, not to be confused with our Chase Howell, is a three-star recruit on Rivals. He had also received offers from Sam Houston, Northern Iowa, Incarnate Word and the University of Texas-San Antonio.

But the 6-foot-1 and 185-pound wideout ultimately chose the Colorado Buffaloes.

During his senior season at Atascocita High School, Sowell recorded about 1,400 yards and 16 touchdowns during the Eagles’ 11-3 season. Colorado offered Sowell on Dec. 4 and after his recent trip to Boulder, he officially announced his commitment via Twitter.

Sowell is now the 19th commit of Colorado’s 2022 class and just the second wide receiver — fellow Texan Jordyn Tyson being the other.

Considering the recent mass exodus of Buffaloes’ wide receivers, Sowell and Tyson could get a decent look come fall camp.
