Tennessee pitcher Chase Dollander discusses leadership and Jared Dickey as a catcher.

Tennessee has opened fall practices at Lindsey Nelson Stadium under sixth-year head coach Tony Vitello.

Tennessee pitcher Chase Dollander met with media Friday and discussed the Vols beginning fall baseball.

“The guys coming back are trying to be the guys that can just kind of try to show morale and show them the ropes of what’s going to happen, what’s going to go on this fall and just kind of some things that the coaches expect from us,” Dollander said of being a leader for new players in the Vols’ program. “As of right now, they’re doing a really good job with it. The older guys just have to step into that leadership role.”

Dollander also discussed what he has been working on during the offseason.

I’m really working on my off-speed pitches a lot this year, just trying to sharpen up the curveball a little bit, just to be able to use that pitch more,” he said. “Me and Coach A (Frank Anderson) have really been focusing on that.”

Below are Dollander’s statistics during the 2022 season.

Link Jarrett breaks down Chase Dollander’s performance against Notre Dame.

No. 1 Tennessee (57-8) defeated Notre Dame (39-16), 12-4, Saturday in game No. 2 of the NCAA Tournament Knoxville Super Regional at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

The Tennessee-Notre Dame best-of-three series is tied, 1-1.

Chase Dollander (10-0) pitched seven innings for Tennessee, recording five strikeouts and zero walks.

Notre Dame head coach Link Jarrett provided his analysis of Dollander’s performance.

“Dollander threw a great game,” Jarrett said. “He really had four pitches in play. The velocity — we knew coming in — has a life of its own. It was sneaky. I thought his fastball usage was good to both sides of the plate and occasionally up. The cutter was fine. He flipped the breaking ball in there.

“On the lefties, he got some changeups, and then later, I think some of the righties got some changeups. When you have a guy that is 96-98 (with his fastball) with a cutter at 86-88 and a breaking pitch and changeup, your work is cut out for you.”

Three Tennessee players invited to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team.

Three Tennessee pitchers have received invites from the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team.

Sophomore Chase Dollander joins freshmen Chase Burns and Drew Beam in receiving invites.

UT press release:

Three Tennessee pitchers have been invited to be a part of the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team this summer.

Sophomore Chase Dollander along with freshmen Chase Burns and Drew Beam continue a streak a Vols that have been invited to the USA CNT in recent years. The talented trio joins Blade Tidwell (2021), Drew Gilbert (2021), and Garrett Crochet (2019) as UT players to either participate or be invited to play for the collegiate national team.
In total, Tennessee has now had 26 current or former players earn an invite to play for Team USA, including six since in the past four years. The Vols have had at least one player earn an invitation in each of the past three summers in which the CNT has played (no team in 2020 due to COVID).

The trifecta of Dollander, Burns and Beam made up UT’s weekend rotation for the majority of the year, helping lead the Vols to their best regular season in program history. The three have combined to post a 25-1 record over 41 starts this season while racking up 263 strikeouts and issuing just 58 walks.

Dollander was voted as the SEC Pitcher of the Year, becoming just the second UT pitcher to ever win that award, joining Luke Hochevar (2005). The Georgia native was also named a first-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball, becoming the first UT pitcher to do so since Hochevar in 2005. Dollander is also a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy.

Burns joined Dollander as a Collegiate Baseball All-American, earning third-team honors. He is the first Tennessee freshman pitcher to earn postseason All-America honors since R.A. Dickey was a consensus first-team selection back in 1994. The Gallatin, Tennessee, native is also a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy and was named an All-SEC second team and All-Freshman team selection.

Beam rounds out the group after a stellar freshman campaign that saw him take home SEC Freshman of the Year honors. The Murfreesboro, Tennessee, native is the first pitcher and just the second player in program history to win the award, joining J.P. Arencibia (2005).
