2023 Bank of America ROVAL 400: What you need to know

  • Joe Gibbs Racing driver Christopher Bell gave Toyota its 1st win on the ROVAL last season after Ford won the inaugural race in 2018, followed by 3 straight Chevrolet checkered flags. Bell starts 2nd Sunday
  • Hendrick Motorsports driver Chase Elliott is the only 2-time winner in the 5-race history at the ROVAL, taking checkers in 2019 and 2020
  • 23XI Racing’s Tyler Reddick is on the pole for Sunday’s race, posting a best speed of 102.839 mph in qualifying
  • Daniel Suarez will start 3rd, the fastest Chevrolet in qualifying, after turning in a best speed of 102.603 mph
  • Suarez has had issues in the past at the ROVAL, finishing with a 25.8 Average-Finish Position (AFP) in 5 career starts
  • Penske Racing’s Joey Logano is the top Ford in the starting grid, going off 7th after a best speed of 102.203 mph
  • Hendrick’s Alex Bowman has never won at the ROVAL, but he leads all drivers with a 6.0 AFP with 2 top-5 runs and all 4 of his Cup starts at the track resulting in finishes of 10th or better
  • Penske’s Ryan Blaney won the inaugural race in 2018, and he has 4 top-5 finishes, 40 laps led and a 9.8 AFP in 5 career Cup starts on the Charlotte road course
  • TrackHouse Racing’s Ross Chastain has been disastrous in his 4 Cup starts at the ROVAL, posting a dismal 26.5 AFP
  • JTG Daugherty’s Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has a 22.2 AFP in 5 career Cup starts on the ROVAL, with a best finish of 17th and 1 DNF

2023 Bank of America ROVAL 400 – Expert pick

Odds provided by FanDuel Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 6:10 a.m. ET.

CHRISTOPHER BELL (+1000) is a strong value going off from the pole. He already has a victory at the ROVAL last season, and in 3 career starts, he has turned in an AFP of 11.0.

In the 5 Cup races at the ROVAL, we’ve already had 1 repeat winner (Elliott). In addition, starting position matters. While there has never been a winner from the pole, 4 of the 5 winners have come from a starting position of 10th or higher.

2023 Bank of America ROVAL 400 – Long shot

ALEX BOWMAN (+3800) hasn’t won on the ROVAL, but he has also never finished lower than 10th place in 4 career Cup starts on the setup.

Bowman hasn’t had a lot of success lately after a fairly decent start to the season. He was inside the top 10 on 6 occasions in 8 starts from late February through mid-March. However, he has been 12th or higher in 17 of his past 20 starts. He is still a good value based on his successful runs on the Charlotte road course, although more conservative bettors will probably want to play BOWMAN TOP-10 FINISH (whatever the odds are) for a more likely result.
