Charlie Condon reaches agreement on historic MLB draft contract

UGA baseball star Charlie Condon has agreed to sign a contract with the largest draft bonus in MLB history

Former Georgia Bulldogs star third baseman Charlie Condon has agreed to a pro contract that includes a signing bonus worth $9.25 million, which equals the largest draft bonus in MLB history.

Condon fell to the Colorado Rockies and the third pick in the MLB draft. Part of the reason for Condon’s fall from No. 1 might have been his contract. The draft’s No. 1 pick, Travis Bazzana, signed a deal with an $8.95 million bonus, which is well below the No. 1 pick’s $10.57 million bonus slot value. The second pick of the draft, Chase Burns signed a contract with a $9.25 million bonus as well.

Condon was widely considered the best prospect entering the draft, so his dropping to No. 3 was surprising. However, the Cleveland Guardians elected to pinch pennies with the top pick.

The Colorado Rockies have one of the most hitter-friendly parks in baseball, so Condon will have an opportunity to put up big numbers for Colorado. Condon is the power hitter the Rockies desperately need.

Condon is Georgia’s single-season and all-time home run leader. The 6-foot-6, 215-pound third baseman just finished the best power-hitting season in Georgia baseball history. He batted a remarkable .433 (No. 1 in the country) with 37 home runs, 57 walks and 78 RBIs. Condon is a huge reason Georgia hosted a super regional this year.

Condon earned numerous honors for his 2024 season including winning the Golden Spikes Award and the Howser Trophy.

Bulldogs bounce back, beat NC State to force game 3

Georgia baseball responded to Game 1’s loss with a winning effort to force a Monday elimination matchup with the Wolfpack.

After a lopsided 18-1 loss in Game 1 on Saturday, the Georgia Bulldogs responded well in an elimination game on Sunday, winning 11-2 to force a third game to decide the series against the NC State Wolfpack.

The Bulldogs took an early lead off of a Slate Alford two-run homer in the first inning, and designated hitter Tre Phelps extended the lead with a three-run homer in the third inning. Analytics compare Georgia baseball’s Charlie Condon to Barry Bonds

Charlie Condon in the same breath as Barry Bonds? Wes Johnson says so…

Charlie Condon is in the midst of one of the greatest seasons not only in Georgia baseball history, but also the history of college baseball as a whole.

Condon added to his NCAA record of home runs in a single season during Friday’s Athens Regional matchup against Army, crushing his 36th moonshot of the season. He also holds the UGA career records for both a single season and career (61).

As the Bulldogs continue to battle Army on Friday, SEC Network released a video piece surrounding Condon’s rise to stardom. UGA head coach Wes Johnson makes an appearance, and he goes on to tell an intriguing story about his conversation with a person regarding Condon’s analytics.

“We use analytical models,” Johnson said. “And the guy who started these models called me one day and said, ‘Hey, are we getting this data right?Like the only other guy we’ve had a model for was Barry Bonds. Like that’s the only other guy we’ve seen that’s comparable to him’.”

Barry Bonds is arguably the greatest hitter the sport of baseball has every witnessed. He holds the single-season home run record (73) and is first on the all-time MLB home runs list with 762. He also leads in position-WAR with 162.8, and his career slugging percentage of .606 ranks first among post-integration players.

Condon’s comparison to Bonds’ analytics only adds to his superstar mantra. Remind you, Condon came to Georgia as a preferred walk-on with no scholarship offers to his name. Whether the Bulldogs go on to beat Army and ultimately make Omaha or not, Condon is a sure-fire top MLB draft pick in 2024.

UGA stays put in USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll

Georgia would have not hosted a super regional if the USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll determined national seeding

The Georgia Bulldogs remain the the No. 9 team in the May 27 edition of the USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll. Georgia fell in the SEC tournament to LSU, but was able to earn the No. 7 national seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Georgia will host the Athens Regional, which features Georgia Tech, UNC Wilmington, and Army. If Georgia wins the Athens Regional, then the Bulldogs will have an opportunity to host a super regional.

Georgia baseball manager Wes Johnson is proud of the Bulldogs for earning the No. 7 national seed. The Bulldogs played an outstanding regular season and earned an impressive record in the SEC.

“We beat a Clemson team here that was really good,” said Johsnon. “I go all the way back to Northern Kentucky and how good they were. They won their conference tournament. They are going to give some people some fits. Georgia Tech is in our region. We took two from them.”

Georgia Tech controversially ended a game against Georgia earlier this season when the Bulldogs were on the verge of defeating the Yellow Jackets.

“You keep going through the league, sweep Alabama, sweeping Vanderbilt, sweeping South Carolina at South Carolina, all three of those teams are in the tournament,” continued Johnson. “It is kind of crazy when you hear that Tennessee and (Texas) A&M, they were talking that they are 30-something and three at home. We are one of those three losses.”

The SEC has the top four teams in the country in Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Texas A&M. The SEC is baseball’s best conference. Tennessee, who won the SEC Tournament, remains the nation’s No. 1 team.

Georgia baseball’s next game is on May 31 at 1:00 p.m. ET against Army in the Athens Regional.

UGA baseball projected to miss out on hosting a super regional

Georgia baseball is on the cusp of hosting a super regional, but may need a little big of luck

The Georgia Bulldogs are projected to be the nation’s No. 9 national seed in the NCAA baseball tournament, according D1Baseball. The Bulldogs have a chance to host a super regional, but after falling in the SEC Tournament, Georgia may need some help.

“Florida State is moving ahead of Georgia,” wrote DlBaseball. “The Seminoles continue to be in a strong position from an RPI standpoint at 8, while they are now 2-0 at the ACC Tournament with a massive game coming up against Wake Forest on Saturday. A win over Wake, we believe, would lock the Seminoles into the top eight, barring a surprise.”

In this scenario, if Georgia won the Athens Regional, it would travel to play the Florida State Seminoles, who would be the No. 8 national seed, in a super regional. Georgia is projected to host UC Irvine, Stetson and Georgia Tech in the Athens Regional.

Georgia baseball star Charlie Condon and the Bulldogs have put together an impressive year. Condon leads the nation in batting average at .433. The powerful hitter has 35 home runs this season, which is the most of any player in the country. Condon has a team-high 75 RBIs and has drawn 60 walks this season.

This season, Georgia is 39-15 and an impressive 29-5 at home, so if the Dawgs can earn an opportunity to host a super regional, then it would be a big advantage for UGA.

As of May 25, D1Baseball projects the SEC will have five of the top nine national seeds. D1Baseball has the SEC’s Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky and Texas A&M as four of the top five national seeds.
