Browns peers vote for their 5 captains for 2023 season

The Browns have named their five captains.

As we approach the beginning of the 2023 season, the Cleveland Browns have not only cut their roster down to 53 and signed 15 players to their practice squad, but they have now voted for their team captains for the 2023 season. And yes, quarterback Deshaun Watson was one of the players voted as a captain by his teammates for the 2023 season.

This team will go as far as Watson takes them. The team has not been shy about putting their $230 million quarterback at the forefront of their social media posts or in front of the media.

After overhauling their roster, especially along the defensive line and all of the other weaknesses on the roster, expectations are sky-high in Cleveland. The Browns have no excuses not to get into the playoffs and make a run at an AFC North title.

Here are the five players who will wear the C on their jerseys in 2023 for the Browns.

Browns Injury Report: Denzel Ward tweaks hamstring, David Njoku still out

With the Browns vs. Texans in three days, the Browns are missing two significant players from practice.

The Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans are set for battle in three days as quarterback Deshaun Watson is set to make his first start in the brown and orange. However, the Browns were missing three significant contributors from Thursday’s practice.

As tight end David Njoku is still working through a knee injury, he has missed his second practice in a row. Cornerback Denzel Ward is also working through a groin injury as well. The third player missing from practice, long snapper Charley Hughlett was absent with an illness as well.

Keep your eyes peeled to see who is still out on the last day of practice tomorrow before the Browns travel to Houston.

Who’s next?: 3 Browns who are contract extension candidates after Charley Hughlett

The Browns just paid Charley Hughlett. Who could be next to see a new deal?

Fresh off of a win over the Cincinnati Bengals, the Cleveland Browns proved to have a good deal of bright spots on their roster despite previously dropping four straight games. And with bright spots come contract extensions to keep those players in brown and orange. The Browns just did this with long snapper Charley Hughlett last week, making him the highest-paid long snapper in NFL history.

After Hughlett, however, who could be next up for general manager Andrew Berry to get a new deal done? Here are three candidates who could be the next to put pen to paper on a shiny new contract extension with the Browns.

Browns make Charley Hughlett highest paid long snapper in NFL history

The Browns have given their long snapper Charley Hughlett the biggest contract a long snapper has ever seen.

The longest-tenured Cleveland Browns player (well, tied for the longest with guard Joel Bitonio) Charley Hughlett is not going anywhere anytime soon. The Browns have given their long snapper a new contract, extending him for an additional four years according to his agent Brett Tessler.

According to Tessler, the Browns have handed Hughlett the largest signing bonus, the most guaranteed money, and the largest contract in overall value that a long snapper has ever received. Drafting Cade York in the fourth round and signing Corey Bojorquez to a two-year deal, the Browns will have continuity in the special teams room heading into 2023. Well, except for maybe a new coordinator.

If it isn’t broken don’t fix it.

Browns long snapper Charley Hughlett placed on reserve/COVID-19 list

The Browns placed long snapper Charley Hughlett and practice squad RB Johnny Stanton on the reserve/COVID-19 list

Even at the start of a much-needed bye week, the Cleveland Browns continue to take hits to the roster. On Monday, the Browns placed long snapper Charley Hughlett on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Practice squad running back Johnny Stanton was also placed on that unit’s version of the COVID-19 list as well.

Per the NFL’s transaction wire, Hughlett did test positive for COVID-19. His vaccination status is unknown. The same is true of Stanton, who has also spent some time on the active roster this year.

With the Browns on a bye, Hughlett’s positive test has the potential to not impact the team. The veteran has been the team’s exclusive long snapper since the start of the 2015 season.

Mack Wilson added to Browns injury report with a hip issue

Long snapper Charley Hughlett was back, as was center JC Tretter

There was a new name on the Cleveland Browns injury report following Thursday’s practice session. Linebacker Mack Wilson went from a full participant on Wednesday to missing all of Thursday.

Wilson was designed DNP with a hip injury. He did work with trainers on the side fields.

On the positive front, center JC Tretter did return to practice after getting a veteran rest day on Wednesday. In addition, long snapper Charley Hughlett was back in action. Hughlett was originally lumped in with the group of players placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list, but he wound up not going on the list. After missing Wednesday’s session with the snafu, Hughlett was back and at full action.

Myles Garrett remained home with his illness. Coach Kevin Stefanski again indicated he expects the Pro Bowl DE back on Friday.

Browns add 3 more players to reserve/COVID-19 list

The Browns now have five active players on the reserve/COVID-19 list

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to rear its unwelcome head with the Cleveland Browns. Three more Browns players were placed on the team’s reserve/COVID-19 list on Wednesday.

Starting right tackle Jack Conklin, long snapper Charley Hughlett and kicker Cody Parkey were placed on the list. They join offensive lineman Chris Hubbard and fullback Andy Janovich on the list. The Browns shut down team facilities on both Friday and Monday due to positive tests.

Hubbard is the only player who has verified that he tested positive for COVID-19. Players can be placed on the list if they either test positive or were in close contact with a confirmed positive person. Those who did not test positive can be activated after five straight days of negative tests, as happened with Baker Mayfield earlier this season.
