Charissa Thompson attempts to clarify her fake reporting claims on Instagram: ‘I chose the wrong words’

“I chose the wrong words to describe the situation”

Fox Sports and Amazon Prime Video host Charissa Thompson addressed the comments she made earlier this week in which she said she would “make up the report sometimes because, A, the coach wouldn’t come out at halftime or it was too late and I was like, I didn’t want to screw up the report, so I was like, “I’m just gonna make this up.’”

Those comments led to fellow reporters and others in journalism rightfully calling her out for doing so, but Thompson claimed on Instagram that she “chose the wrong words to describe the situation” and that she has “never lied about anything or been unethical during my time as a sports broadcaster,” which seems to counter what she said earlier.

Here’s the full apology:

Sideline reporters condemn Charissa Thompson for admitting she made up reports during games

Charissa Thompson admitted she made up reports during games, and fellow reporters rightfully condemned her.

It was a stunning admission from Fox Sports’ and Amazon Prime Video’s Charissa Thompson.

The former sideline reporter said this week that, at certain points during games, she “would make up the report sometimes because, A, the coach wouldn’t come out at halftime or it was too late and I was like, I didn’t want to screw up the report, so I was like, “I’m just gonna make this up.'”

“No coach is gonna get mad if I say, ‘Hey, we need to stop hurting ourselves, we need to be better on third down, we need to stop turning the ball over and do a better job of getting off the field,'” she added. “Like, they’re not gonna correct me on that. I’m like it’s fine, I’ll just make up the report.”

Obviously, that’s the opposite of what you want to hear from a journalist, and that was how other sideline reporters from CBS’s Tracy Wolfson to ESPN’s Lisa Salters came out to say after the quotes went viral:

Charissa Thompson admitting to making up sideline reports sends shockwaves through the industry

Charissa Thompson’s admission that she made up sideline reports during NFL games sent shockwaves through the industry.

Regardless of what you think of in-game sideline reports in any sport — and most people don’t become heavily invested in them — this week’s admission by longtime sideline reporter (and current host of Amazon’s Thursday Night Football broadcast) that she sometimes fabricated the reports she was supposed to give sent shockwaves throughout the industry.

Thompson joined Barstool Sports’ Dan Katz and PFT Commenter on the Pardon My Take podcast, and had this to say about it.

“I’ve said this before,” Thompson noted. “I haven’t been fired to saying it, but I’ll say it again. I would make up the report sometimes, because A, the coach wouldn’t come out at halftime, or it was too late and I didn’t want to screw up the report. So I was like, ‘I’m just gonna make this up.’

“Because first of all, no coach is gonna get mad if I say, ‘Hey, we need to stop hurting ourselves, we need to be better on third down, we need to stop turning the ball over and do a better job of getting off the field.’ They’re not gonna correct me on that. So I’m like, it’s fine, I’ll just make up the report.”

As Brandon Contes of Awful Announcing noted, Thompson had previously admitted to embellishing reports on Erin Andrews’ podcast. but that was not this.

Again, whether you take sideline reports and sideline reporters seriously, making up the news on the fly is a serious issue, no matter the subject. And as you might expect, Thompson’s admission sent shockwaves through the industry.

Travis Kelce says ‘I owe you’ to Erin Andrews and Charissa Thompson for encouraging Taylor Swift

Did this really help Kelce start to date Swift?

Travis Kelce may have gotten some help when it came to dating Taylor Swift, it seems.

Not long after the Kansas City Chiefs tight end told his brother — and the world — on their podcast that he tried to give Swift his phone number, Charissa Thompson and Erin Andrews took some time on their pod to encourage Swift to go out with him.

Thompson posted the clip on Instagram recently (see below) of she and Andrews, and Kelce responded: “You two are something else!! I owe you big time!!””

Does that mean this actually helped? We don’t know, but this is very fun:

Here’s who’s joining Richard Sherman on Amazon Prime’s Thursday Night Football studio show

Who’s joining Richard Sherman as a TNF analyst? We go over it.

One of the more significant changes to the NFL broadcasting schedule this year is that Thursday Night Football games will now be broadcast on Amazon Prime. (Be sure to check with your local bar or restaurant on whether they will show these games!)

It is the first time a pro football broadcast series will be primarily shown over a streaming service. And with a loaded slate of games, TNF certainly appears to be quite interesting moving forward.

Aside from Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit calling matchups in the booth, a bunch of familiar faces will also analyze TNF games in the studio.

Let’s dive into who will be breaking down the respective Thursday night matchups every week on Amazon Prime.

Charissa Thompson targeted as Amazon ‘Thursday Night Football’ pregame show host

Charissa Thompson looks set to add Amazon’s NFL TNF pregame show to her resume

The Amazon ‘Thursday Night Football’ pregame show is going to have a FOX-type feel. Tony Gonzalez apparently will be working with Charissa Thompson, who the New York Post revealed is expected to be named as the pregame host.

Thompson and Gonzalez worked together on FOX’s NFL programming in the past.

Gonzalez missed last season on the air after his contract ran out and he was deemed to be headed toward Amazon if it was to win the rights for Thursday games, which it did.

Per the Post:

Amazon, according to sources, also had talks with Kay Adams, who recently left NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” about hosting the pregame, but the sides failed to come to an agreement.

Thompson does a fine job hosting “Fox NFL Kickoff” each Sunday at 11 a.m. She will continue in that Fox role, while adding Amazon Prime on Thursdays.
