Inactives for Chiefs vs. Chargers, Week 11

These players will be inactive for the Kansas City Chiefs Week 11 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Kansas City Chiefs have released their inactive list for their Week 11 Monday night matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Here are the inactive players for the Chiefs:

– DE Alex Okafor
– CB Kendall Fuller
– RB Darwin Thompson
– TE Blake Bell
– QB Chad Henne
– OL Jackson Barton
– OL Nick Allegretti

Here is the Chargers inactive list:

– OL Russel Okung
– WR Geremy Davis
– RB Justin Jackson
– OL Sam Tevi
– QB Easton Stick
– LB Drue Tranquill
– DL T.Y. McGill Jr.

The Chiefs will have all five starting offensive linemen in this game for the first time since Week 1. Eric Fisher is returning from a groin injury that has kept him out of action for the last eight weeks and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif returns from an ankle injury he suffered in Week 8.

Okafor is still dealing with an ankle injury and will miss this game, but could have a shot to return in two weeks after the bye. Fuller did participate in practice this week but was downgraded to a limited participant on Friday and will miss this game. He also has a shot to return after the bye week.

As for the Chargers, they will be without starting left tackle Russel Okung. This leaves them with just one starter along their offensive line and four backups. Look for Chiefs’ defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo to bring a lot of pressure on quarterback Philip Rivers tonight.

Keys to a Chiefs victory over Chargers in Week 11

How do the Kansas City Chiefs come away with a win against the Los Angeles in Week 11?

Monday night will be the biggest divisional game for the Chiefs in a long time.

This season has been bumpier than expected for Kansas City, but there is still plenty to be optimistic about. The Chiefs will play in Mexico City with all five starting offensive linemen for the first time since Week 2, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes is healthy again. The Chiefs defense, though still with issues, is an improved unit from 2018.

The 4-6 Los Angeles Chargers are fighting for their playoff lives. They have talent across the board, but injuries have ravaged their season like so many times before. Quarterback Philip Rivers also appears to be on his last legs and it is becoming more difficult for him to shoulder the load.

Improve red zone efficiency

The Chiefs’ offense is still an elite unit (No. 3 in the NFL), but the one area it is struggling in is scoring touchdowns in the red zone. Last season, the Chiefs scored red zone TDs 73 percent of the time, second-best in the NFL. This season they rank 26th, scoring TDs on just 47 percent of their trips to the red zone.

The Chiefs are settling for too many field goals, which is keeping their opponents in the game. With six games still to go, kicker Harrison Butker has already matched his number of field goal attempts from last season.

With Mahomes at QB and one of the best skill position groups in the NFL, there’s no reason for K.C. to be struggling to score TDs. The offensive line returning to full health might help.

Behind Enemy Lines: 5 questions with Chargers Wire for Week 11

We go behind enemy lines to ask questions about the Kansas City Chiefs’ upcoming opponent in Week 11.

The Kansas City Chiefs are getting ready to face the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 11 in Mexico City, hoping to get a win against an AFC West rival.

To learn more about Kansas City’s opponent, we spoke with managing editor Gavino Borquez over at Chargers Wire and asked him a few questions.

Chiefs Wire: Philip Rivers is 37 years old and in the final season of his contract. Do you get the sense this might be his last hurrah with the Chargers?

Chargers Wire: In 2018, Rivers had one of the most productive seasons in his professional career. However, he hasn’t been able to match that in 2019. Rivers leads the league in passing yards, but he has tied for the second-most interceptions thrown. Inconsistency along the offensive line is to blame for his woes, but there are obvious signs of regression — poor decision-making and lack of arm talent. Rivers, who’s turning 38 in December, will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, and this could mark the last time he will be in a Chargers uniform. Whether he’s considering retiring or playing another season or two with another team, there’s a sense that the team wants to start fresh with their future signal-caller when they move into their new stadium with the Rams in Inglewood, Calif. Not to mention, Los Angeles has a lot of decisions to make when it comes to re-signing some of their premier players within the next couple of seasons, and it wouldn’t be surprising if they use that money that could be used on Rivers elsewhere.

Report: Chiefs RB Damien Williams rejoined team ahead of Mexico City trip

Kansas City Chiefs RB Damien Williams should be available to play Week 11’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Damien Williams did not practice on Friday and Saturday ahead of Week 11. Williams was excused from those practices for personal reasons related to his family. When the final injury report came out on Friday he was listed as questionable. At first, there was at least some concern that he might be unable to rejoin the team in time to travel to Mexico City. Now those concerns have been alleviated.

A recent report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport has revealed that Williams was able to rejoin the team in time to make the trip to Mexico City with his teammates.

Williams should be available to play for Kansas City on Monday night after rejoining the team, but there are still questions at the running back position that aren’t related to this situation.

Last week against the Titans, LeSean McCoy was made inactive and Williams got the start at running back. Following the game, Andy Reid cited McCoy’s age and workload for the decision to make him inactive. Many suspected this might actually be a tactic to motivate McCoy after some sloppy play, including a pair of costly fumbles. During the Titans game, Williams caught whatever McCoy was dealing with. Williams had a fumble on a play where he missed a massive cutback lane and the fumble was recovered and returned for a touchdown.

There’s truly no telling who will get the start at running back for the Chiefs this week. But I wouldn’t put it past the team to go back to the hot hand approach.

Week 11 preview: 5 things to watch for in Chiefs vs. Chargers

Keep an eye on these five things as the Kansas City Chiefs face the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 11.

The Kansas City Chiefs look to get back on track against the Los Angeles Chargers on the international stage for “Monday Night Football.” This is one of the most important games of the season as the Chiefs are not only fighting for playoff position but also the AFC West title.

Here are five things to watch for in Chiefs vs. Chargers:

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Chiefs’ offensive line

The line will be getting back two big pieces this week: Eric Fisher and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif. The return of those two is huge for Kansas City because the offensive line has struggled to keep the quarterback clean for the majority of the season. The two will be a big improvement over the replacements they had at their respective positions.

The return of Fisher and Duvernay-Tardif also comes at the perfect time since the Chiefs suffered more injuries last week against the Titans. At one point they were down to their final five linemen during the game. They would have needed to play a tight end along the offensive line had they suffered another injury.

Thankfully, Mitchell Schwartz is expected to play against Monday after suffering an injury during Week 10. This will be the first time the Chiefs will have all five of their starting linemen since Week 2, so it will be interesting to see how much better the offense performs. Now that everyone is healthy we may finally see how good the offense can be. If everyone continues to stay healthy, especially along the offensive line, the end of the season has the potential to be very fun for Chiefs fans.

Predictions for Chiefs vs. Chargers, Week 11

Chiefs Wire staff shares their predictions for the upcoming Chiefs game.

Are you ready for some Chiefs football?

Like the past three seasons, the Chiefs Wire staff will offer its weekly predictions for each Chiefs game. Here are our picks for Kansas City’s Week 11 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Charles Goldman’s pick: Chiefs win 34-20
Season record: 5-5

Twitter: @goldmctNFL

As I’ve said throughout the week, I think this game will be won in the trenches.

The Kansas City Chiefs are getting healthy at the right time. This game marks the first time they’ll have their starting offensive line together since the first series of Week 2. That should provide a big boost for the offense when it comes to passing, running the ball and keeping Patrick Mahomes protected.

On the other side, the Los Angeles Chargers look to be without several starters along the offensive line. Russell Okung has a chance to play but he didn’t participate in practice all week.

Look for Kansas City to keep the Los Angeles ground game tamed with run blitzes and some of the aggressive play calls we saw in Week 8 and Week 9.  Steve Spagnuolo mentioned that he got away from calling those run pressures last week and it was a mistake. Additionally, look for the Chiefs to send pressure after Philip Rivers to keep him uncomfortable throughout the game.

Wesley Roesch’s pick: Chiefs win 41-40

Season record: 8-2

Twitter: @WesleyRoesch

Let’s face it, the Chiefs would have beaten the Titans if not for silly self-destructive mistakes. What are the odds they have another game filled with those? I may have jinxed them by asking that question, but I think it’s unlikely.

With many players getting healthy and a brutal loss to think about, I think K.C. bounces back in Mexico. I do expect this to be a high-scorer. Chargers running backs will likely have a big game. I think this comes down to the wire, and this time Patrick Mahomes gets the game-winning score at the end.

Nicolas Roesch’s pick: Chiefs win 38-34

Season record: 8-2

Twitter: @Nicolas_Roesch

I think we’re in for an old-fashioned AFC West shootout on Monday night. Nobody knows what to expect from the Chiefs’ defense on any given week, but I have a hard time seeing it slowing down all the Chargers’ offensive playmakers. The saving grace for K.C. will be the banged-up Chargers’ offensive line, which could have only one starter in this game.

Offensively for the Chiefs, I expect Patrick Mahomes to be in MVP form as usual. K.C. will have its way with the Charger defense, and hopefully, clean up the penalties and turnovers that have plagued it the last couple of weeks. At the end of the night, I think the Chiefs have a few more big plays in them than L.A.

John Dillon’s pick: Chiefs win 44-10

Season record: 6-4

Twitter: @TheJohnDillon

After the international game scheduled for last year was canceled and moved due to inadequate field conditions, the Chiefs are poised to play “the other” Los Angeles team this week in Mexico City at Azteca Stadium. It’ll be a marquee Monday night matchup with potentially huge playoff implications between AFC West rivals.

Its no secret Kansas City has been slipping up over the past several weeks, and now as they enter the closing stretch of the season they’re only clinging to the playoffs by a thin margin. Andy Reid teams are notorious for mid-year slides like the team has experienced this year, but with injuries mounting it could be more of an uphill battle than one might expect, even with Patrick Mahomes back and playing better than ever.

This week I’ll take Kansas City 44-10 in a huge blowout abroad. The Chiefs should know they need to start their push now, and if I were a betting man I’d wager this would be the week they’ll start gelling and coming into their own. Primetime has a way of doing that.

Final injury report for Chiefs vs. Chargers, Week 11

A look at the final injury report of the week complete with game status designations for the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers have completed their final practice ahead of their Week 11 matchup in Mexico City.

Check out the injury report with game designations for the Chiefs down below:

Player Injury Designation*
QB Patrick Mahomes Knee
DT Derrick Nnadi Elbow
DT Chris Jones Groin
CB Kendall Fuller Thumb Questionable
LT Eric Fisher Groin
LT Cam Erving Ankle
RG Laurent Duvernay-Tardif Ankle
DE Frank Clark Neck
WR Sammy Watkins Groin
RT Mitchell Schwartz Knee
TE Blake Bell Ankle Out
DE Emmanuel Ogbah Pectoral Out
DE Alex Okafor Ankle Out
RB Damien Williams NIR Questionable

* Out = Won’t play | Doubtful = Unlikely to play | Questionable = Possible to play

Nothing too out of the ordinary for the Chiefs here. Andy Reid expected Bell, Okafor and Ogbah to all be ruled out for this week’s game. Damien Williams is expected to join the team and travel to Mexico City, but the questionable designation suggests there remains a possibility that he doesn’t.

Kendall Fuller did participate in practice this week but was downgraded to a limited participant, so his questionable status suggests a setback or that the team may not be entirely comfortable with how he’s catching the ball in his return from injury.

The big story for Kansas City is the two starters along the offensive that will return for this game. Eric Fisher and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif will be back in action. It’ll be the first time that Fisher has played since Week 2 of the 2019 season. Mitchell Schwartz is also expected to play after being limited in practice all week. That’s going to be a massive boost for the Chiefs going into an important AFC West showdown.

Check out the injury report with game Chargers for the Titans down below:

Player Injury Designation*
LB Denzel Perryman Knee
DT Justin Jones Shoulder
OG Dan Feeney Shoulder
S Roderic Teamer Groin Questionable
DT Cortez Broughton Illness
WR Geremy Davis Hamstring Doubtful
OT Russel Okung Groin Doubtful
OT Sam Tevi Knee Out
RB Justin Jackson Calf Doubtful
LC Cole Mazza Illness Questionable
LB Thomas Davis NIR
OT Trey Pipkins Toe
LB Drue Tranquil Calf Questionable

* Out = Won’t play | Doubtful = Unlikely to play | Questionable = Possible to play

The Chargers only ruled out Sam Tevi, who had knee surgery recently. Their other starting offensive tackle, Russel Okung, was downgraded to doubtful on Sunday. That makes him an unlikely candidate to play on Monday night.

After returning to practice in a full capacity, Roderic Teamer is still getting the questionable designation. He’s been doing a good job filling in for Derwin James, who is currently on injured reserve.

Two backups are listed as doubtful in Justin Jackson and Geremy Davis. Long snapper Cole Mazza is still dealing with an illness, that’ll be an interesting one to watch.

Linebacker Drue Tranquil was a late add to the injury report with a calf injury. He originally had no game status but was downgraded to questionable on Sunday. He’s their most athletic at the position, so this is also one to keep an eye on.

Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter for any changes or late additions to the injury report.

Friday injury report for Chiefs vs. Chargers, Week 11

A look at the second injury report of the week for the Chiefs and Chargers.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers continue to prepare for their Week 11 matchup in Mexico City. There weren’t any major changes from Thursday’s injury report for either team.

Check out the full injury report for the Chiefs down below:

Player Injury Participation*
QB Patrick Mahomes Knee FP
DT Derrick Nnadi Elbow FP
DT Chris Jones Groin FP
CB Kendall Fuller Thumb FP
LT Eric Fisher Groin FP
LT Cam Erving Ankle FP
RG Laurent Duvernay-Tardif Ankle FP
DE Frank Clark Neck FP

TE Blake Bell Ankle DNP
DE Emmanuel Ogbah Pectoral DNP
DE Alex Okafor Ankle DNP
RB Damien Williams NIR DNP

* DNP = Did not participate | LP = Limited participation | FP = Full participation | NIR = Not injury related

Running back Damien Williams was excused from practice for personal reasons on Friday. Other than that the Chiefs’ injury report is status quo. That’s good news for LT Eric Fisher and RG Laurent Duvernay-Tardif.

With a second limited practice for Mitchell Schwartz, monitor his practice participation on Saturday. It could be the difference between a questionable and doubtful designation for the right tackle.

Here’s the full injury report for the Chargers:

Player Injury Participation*
LB Denzel Perryman Knee FP
DT Justin Jones Shoulder FP
OG Dan Feeney Shoulder FP
S Roderic Teamer Groin FP
DT Cortez Broughton Illness DNP
WR Geremy Davis Hamstring DNP
OT Russel Okung Groin DNP
OT Sam Tevi Knee DNP
RB Justin Jackson Calf DNP
LC Cole Mazza Illness LP
LB Thomas Davis NIR DNP
OT Trey Pipkins Toe FP

* DNP = Did not participate | LP = Limited participation | FP = Full participation | NIR = Not injury related

Safety Roderic Teamer was upgraded to a full participant in practice on Friday for the Chargers. That’s good news for his availability on Monday.

Thomas Davis and Trey Pipkins were both added to the report on Friday. Davis had an absence not related to injury, but Pipkins is dealing with a toe injury. Pipkins was a full participant in practice, but it’s something to watch as the Chargers are already dangerously thin at the offensive tackle position.

Check back tomorrow for the final injury report of the week complete with game status designations.

Offensive and defensive players to watch in Chiefs vs. Chargers

We’ll be keeping an eye on these two Kansas City Chiefs players as they face the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday night.

The Kansas City Chiefs need a bounce-back win after a disappointing loss to the Tennessee Titans last week.

Beating the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday night will go a long way in the Chiefs’ quest for a fourth-straight AFC West division title. It would keep them undefeated within the division and give them a win over each AFC West team.

K.C. is nearing full health after suffering multiple key injuries throughout the season and has a chance to pull it all together to go on a late-season run. The Chargers, meanwhile, are in desperation mode to keep their postseason chances alive.

Let’s take a look at one player on each side of the ball who can help the Chiefs knock off L.A.

Credit: John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

Offense: TE Travis Kelce

Kelce is making acase to be a first-team All-Pro for the third time. He leads all tight ends in receiving yards (741) and is tied for first in receptions (56). He needs just 23 more receiving yards this season to reach 450 receptions and 6,000 yards faster than any other tight end in NFL history.

The Chargers have had success against Kelce in the past, holding him to just one reception in two separate games. He will certainly be a focal point for the Chargers’ defense, but the Chiefs’ dynamic receiving corps should open things up for him. K.C. is 5-1 this season when Kelce catches at least six passes.
