Staff predictions for Chargers vs. Cardinals in Week 7

Find out who the Chargers Wire staff is picking between Los Angeles and Arizona.

The Los Angeles Chargers kick off Week 7 against the Arizona Cardinals.

Who is going to come out victorious?

Here is a look at the predictions from each of our writers at Chargers Wire:

Gavino:

The Chargers come into a State Farm Stadium looking to improve against a Cardinals team dominated by the Packers a week ago. Los Angeles should have success running the football against an Arizona defense that’s allowing an average of 153.0 yards per game on the ground. The Bolts’ defense is the strength of the team, ranking No. 1 in points allowed per game (13.2). It will be difficult for the Cardinals’ offense to find success. Chargers 24, Cardinals 14

Alex K:

Los Angeles has been a top 3 unit against the run this season by EPA/rush, whereas Arizona has ranked in the bottom 10. Expect that to be the difference in a showdown between two of the league’s top rushing offenses. The Chargers’ ability to pass the ball last week was also an encouraging sign that could factor in with Cardinals starters Sean Murphy-Bunting and Garrett Williams dealing with injuries. Chargers 27, Cardinals 13

Who are the experts taking in Chargers vs. Cardinals?

The Los Angeles Chargers are 2.5-point favorites over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 7 of the 2024 regular season. The over/under is 44 points, per BetMGM Sportsbook.

Key things to know about Chargers’ Week 7 opponent: Cardinals

Here are some important things to know about the Cardinals ahead of the Week 7 matchup with the Chargers.

The Chargers are on the road to face the Cardinals in primetime on Monday, Oct. 21, at 6:00 p.m. PT.

To get you prepped for the Week 7 bout, here are five key things to know about Los Angeles’ opponent ahead of the matchup.

How things are going…

The Cardinals are 2-4 on the season. Their best win came in Week 5 when they defeated the 49ers, 24-23.

Men on the move

The Cardinals boast the seventh-best rushing offense in the NFL. James Connor is No. 8 overall in rushing yards (403). While Connor is Arizona’s workhorse, Kyler Murray is lethal with his legs. Murray has the third-most rushing yards among all quarterbacks (261) and averages 8.7 yards per carry.

Problems with the passing game

The Cardinals’ offensive success has come on the ground, and they’re still trying to put it together through the air. They rank 24th in that department. Arizona selected Marvin Harrison Jr. in the first round to provide a spark, but he’s been up and down this season. He’s also in concussion protocol and his availability for Monday night looms large.

Dud of a defense

The Cardinals’ defense has struggled this season. They’ve given up 27.2 points per game, which ranks 27th in the league. Arizona hasn’t been able to get to opposing quarterbacks, ranking last in the NFL in ESPN’s pass rush win rate metric and 30th in pressure rate. They’ve also been gashed on the ground, surrendering 153.0 rush yards per carry (29th).

Look out for…

Tight end Trey McBride. Even if Harrison is available, Murray will still be looking to involve McBride heavily. McBride has at least six catches in three of his past four games. The Chargers have surrendered the eighth-most receptions to tight ends this season (32).

Everything to know from Chargers’ 25-24 victory over Cardinals

Highlighting all the important stuff from the Chargers’ Week 12 win over the Cardinals.

The Chargers trailed for most of their contest Sunday against the Cardinals but pulled out a 25-24 victory to advance to 6-5.

To recap the thrilling come-from-behind victory, here’s everything to know.

It was over when…

Justin Herbert found Austin Ekeler in the flat for a one-yard touchdown with 15 seconds left, then followed it up with a two-point conversion to Gerald Everett.

Game notes

  • Corey Linsley (concussion) was ruled out in the second quarter. Will Clapp came in to replace the veteran, but you could tell the difference in the line’s communication without Linsley in the game. Trey Pipkins (knee) also missed some time but returned to the game at right tackle.
  • Los Angeles once again struggled to stop the run, allowing James Conner to rush for over 100 yards for the first time since 2020 and giving up 5.3 yards per carry. Conner ended up finishing with 120 yards. Kyler Murray’s legs also proved to be an issue, even when the Chargers had a spy on the field. Murray finished with 56 yards and a rushing touchdown.
  • On offense, the Chargers essentially refused to run the ball because of its ineffectiveness, despite Arizona giving up nearly 115 yards on the ground per game coming into the contest. LA had just 13 carries for 65 yards, good for five per carry. If you remove Herbert’s 23-yard scramble, that’s just 3.5 yards per carry.
  • Herbert played the hits, for the most part, targeting Austin Ekeler fifteen times and Keenan Allen seven times. DeAndre Carter had ten targets and Josh Palmer had seven of his own. All other players saw eight targets combined. It was a relatively effective strategy, as Herbert completed nearly 75% of his passes.
  • Los Angeles once again struggled to get off the field on third down, allowing the Cardinals to convert seven of their twelve third-down opportunities. Most of those chances came with 5 yards or less to go because of the Chargers’ inability to stop the run.
  • Derwin James was all over the field, as usual, forcing a fumble on the first drive of the game and coming down with a fourth-down interception in coverage on DeAndre Hopkins.
  • DeAndre Carter generated momentum late with a 20-yard punt return to put the Chargers on the Arizona 43 with 1:48 to go in the fourth quarter. The offense scored a touchdown with 15 seconds remaining, then Justin Herbert found Gerald Everett on the two-point conversion to take the lead.

3 stars of the game

QB Justin Herbert: 35/47 for 274 yards and 3 TDs, 4 rushes for 38 yards

WR DeAndre Carter: 7 receptions for 73 yards and 1 TD, 25 punt return yards

S Derwin James: 8 total tackles, 1 pass deflection, 1 interception, 1 forced fumble

What’s next?

The Chargers continue their road trip, traveling to Las Vegas to face the Raiders next Sunday at 1:25pm PST with a chance to sweep their rival.

Chargers’ reasons for optimism vs. Cardinals in Week 12

Reasons why the Chargers will beat the Cardinals on Sunday.

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”xhceaxsrAk-2381648-7498″]

The Chargers may be 5-5, but there have still been glimpses of the AFC contender many expected Los Angeles to be coming into the season.

After two straight difficult games against San Francisco and Kansas City, the Bolts get an easier matchup with the Cardinals on Sunday.

Here are four reasons to be optimistic that LA will come out on top.

Leaky scoring defense

Arizona has the second-worst scoring defense in the league this season at 26.9 points per game. (Detroit is last at 28.2 per game.) While the Chargers are hardly better, allowing 25.8 points per game, the Cardinals’ defensive woes do suggest that, at the very least, this game should be a shootout. Justin Herbert continues to look healthier by the week, while Arizona will get Kyler Murray back for the first time since Week 9 after their QB suffered a hamstring injury. It’s not clear if Murray will be limited at all, but even if he’s full go, a shootout generally favors the better QB. LA has that guy.

Just as banged up as us

The Chargers rarely encounter a team as injured as they are, but the Cardinals have struggled mightily with health this season. Murray and Marquise Brown will likely return for Arizona, but starters Rondale Moore, Zach Ertz, DJ Humphries, and Byron Murphy have all already been ruled out for Sunday’s contest. Moore’s replacement Greg Dortch is also questionable. On LA’s side, Mike Williams will miss the contest after reaggravating his high ankle sprain, while Nasir Adderley (out, thumb) and Michael Davis (questionable, knee) carry injury designations into the weekend. Still, that’s not bad for the Chargers, who had ten players on this week’s injury report at one time or another. Getting Gerald Everett back will be a huge boost for the Chargers’ offense, and Arizona, without Murphy, will need to devote extra resources to covering Allen, who practiced in full for the entire week for the first time post-injury.

Glendale woes

Arizona has been terrible at home in the past two seasons, logging a record of 4-9 while going 11-3 in road games. The Cardinals are just 1-4 at home this season, with their lone victory coming in a 42-34 shootout with the Saints. The Chargers are also 10-4 against the Cardinals all-time, although one of those 4 losses did come in the only game played in State Farm Stadium back in 2014. Most recently, LA whooped Arizona 45-10 in 2018. The two teams are, obviously, composed much differently now, but the Cardinals don’t gain any advantage by sleeping in their beds under Kliff Kingsbury.

Offense on the upswing

We finally saw flashes of a functional, competent offense last week against Kansas City with Keenan Allen and Mike Williams back in the game. Justin Herbert felt comfortable sticking on initial reads when targeting Allen and the Chiefs’ desire to eliminate underneath routes opened up space behind the back of the defense. With Allen (hopefully) on a full complement of snaps this week and Gerald Everett returning from injury, the offense should be able to move the ball as long as they execute properly. That’s no guarantee, given LA’s second-half execution this season, but against a weak Cardinals defense, this could be the week the Chargers put everything together.
