Bradley Bozeman sounds off on Nathan Shepherd’s dirty hit to Justin Herbert

Bradley Bozeman earned the respect of a lot of people for defending Justin Herbert.

Chargers center Bradley Bozeman got flagged for unnecessary roughness during Sunday’s 26-8 victory over the Saints for an incident in which he was just trying to protect his quarterback.

Justin Herbert got a low hit from Saints defensive tackle Nathan Shepherd, who held on to Herbert’s leg and turned him down awkwardly.

As Shepherd was pulling down on Herbert by his leg while on the ground, Bozeman leaped into him on the ground and piled on Shepherd.

“It was probably one of the dirtier plays I’ve ever seen,” Bozeman said about the incident, “especially with my own eyes. I think the ball’s gone two, three seconds, and he’s still gator-rolling. He’s on the ground; he’s still gator-rolling. You protect your quarterback. You protect your quarterback no matter what. I think any of our offensive linemen who were in that position would have done the exact, same thing. I had to get him off of him, and I did.”

Shepherd was also given an unnecessary roughness penalty, which offset and negated a 10-yard play. But Herbert responded with a 15-yard pass en route to a 15-play, 90-yard touchdown drive.

“I appreciated what he did,” Herbert said. “I tried to pull him off so we wouldn’t have any penalties called, but to have a guy like that defending you, there’s no better feeling.”

Chargers’ Joey Bosa expected to play in Week 8 vs. Saints

The Chargers need to start getting after the quarterback more, and they’re hoping Joey Bosa can help with that.

The Chargers will likely get a key player back for this weekend’s game against the Saints.

Joey Bosa said he expects to play in a limited role on Sunday. Bosa is listed as questionable on the final injury report.

Bosa has only played 56 snaps this season, as he’s dealt with back and hip issues.

He said that he developed a glute strain that affected his sciatic nerve leading up to the Week 3 game against the Steelers, calling it some of the worst pain he’s dealt with in his life.

“I definitely didn’t expect it to be as bad as it has been,” Bosa said. “And then it just kept dragging and dragging. Here we’re five weeks later, or however long it’s been, so it was tough.”

Bosa has been sidelined with injuries for most of the past two seasons. In 2022 and 2023, he appeared in just 14 games combined.

“I feel like I’ve been letting my team down missing these games,” Bosa said. “Letting everybody down. Letting coaches down. Letting the organization down. Letting myself down, and it just sucks how these years have gone, the last few years.”

As Bosa works his way back to a full workload, the Chargers hope he can bring some life to a struggling pass rush.

Key things to know about Chargers’ Week 8 opponent: Saints

Here are some important things to know about the Saints ahead of the Week 8 matchup with the Chargers.

The Chargers return home to face the Saints on Sunday, Oct. 27, at 1:05 p.m. PT.

To get you prepped for the Week 8 bout, here are five key things to know about Los Angeles’ opponent ahead of the matchup.

How things are going…

The Saints are 2-5 on the season. New Orleans has lost its last five games.

Rookie under center

The Saints announced they’re starting first-year quarterback Spencer Rattler for the third straight week. Rattler was thrown in as the starter when Derek Carr sustained an oblique injury in Week 5. This will be Rattler’s first game on the road. The former South Carolina product has completed 62.7% of his passes for 415 yards with one touchdown to two interceptions.

Could be getting some key players back

Aside from being without Carr, the Saints were without some other important offensive players last weekend against the Broncos. Wide receiver Chris Olave (concussion) and tight end Taysom Hill (ribs), who were both out in Week 7, returned to full participation at practice Thursday. Additionally, guard Cesar Ruiz and linebacker Pete Werner were present for practice.

Run all over

The Chargers struggled to run the football last Monday. However, there is an excellent opportunity for a bounce-back performance against a Saints defense that is allowing 146.7 yards rushing per game and 5.4 yards per carry. Since Week 3, New Orleans has allowed 901 yards on the ground, the most in the NFL in that span.

Look out for…

Running back Alvin Kamara. Cardinals RB James Connor had his way with the Chargers defense. Now, Los Angeles will prepare for another one of the league’s better backs. Kamara is a dual-threat weapon who’s posted 690 yards from scrimmage and seven touchdowns.
