Thursday’s injury report for Chargers ahead of matchup vs. Raiders

Chargers injury report ahead of Monday’s matchup with Raiders

The Chargers had their first practice ahead of Monday’s matchup with the Raiders on Thursday.

Here’s a look at today’s injury report:

All players practiced for the Bolts Thursday with some notable returning players.

Defensive lineman Justin Jones, who is dealing with a calf injury, and cornerback Chris Harris Jr., who is dealing with a shoulder injury, were both back at practice. Jones and Harris participated in the individual drills throughout the portion of practice available to the media.

“I’m optimistic about J.J.,” head coach Brandon Staley said. “Both of those guys, J.J and Chris were in the walk-through today. I think that we’re going to get J.J. back full in practice today and Chris is trending positive.”

Safety Derwin James sustained multiple injuries last Sunday against the Chiefs, but is expected to return this week against the Raiders, according to Staley.

“He’s got good strength and range of motion so it’s nothing that we’re concerned about,” Staley said.

Edge defender Joey Bosa fully participated in practice; however, all five other players listed on the injury report were limited including veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen who is dealing with an ankle injury.

Cornerback Ryan Smith, who sustained an injury related to his core muscle has returned to practice. The Chargers now have 21 days to either activate Smith or leave him on the IR for the rest of the season.

Quarterback Justin Herbert was listed on the injury report earlier this week with an apparent hand injury, but according to Staley, it is a non-issue.

Offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga had a successful procedure done on his back, according to Brandon Staley.

“He’s been, number one, a great resource for the guys,” Staley said. “Just having him around is such an advantage.”

Chargers injury update: Justin Jones out, 2 players promoted

Justin Jones has officially been ruled out with a calf injury.

The Chargers announced they have promoted edge defender Emeke Egbule and defensive lineman Joe Gaziano to the active roster from the practice squad ahead of their Week 3 matchup against the Chiefs.

The team also downgraded Justin Jones, who had been listed as questionable, to out. This marks the second straight week that Jones will be unavailable. The fourth-year player is currently dealing with a calf injury.

Gaziano got the call up last weekend against the Cowboys in Jones’ absence over Breiden Fehoko and Forrest Merrill.

Joey Bosa is listed as questionable with a foot and ankle injury, which is why Egbule could serve as insurance in case he is not able to play.

Three Chargers players did not practice on Thursday.

The Chargers finished up their second practice ahead of Sunday’s contest against the Chiefs.

Players that did not participate for the second-straight day were edge defender Joey Bosa (foot/ankle), cornerback Chris Harris Jr. (shoulder) and defensive tackle Justin Jones (calf).

Safety Derwin James returned to the action after missing the first day of practice.

Heading into the week, head coach Brandon Staley said Bosa and James’ absences were precautionary. So to see Bosa not out there comes as a bit of a surprise, and something to monitor.

Head coach Brandon Staley said that Wednesday would be a “precautionary” rest day for James and Bosa.

As for Harris and Jones, both players missed last Sunday’s game against the Cowboys with should and calf injuries, respectively.

Staley said he expects Jones to return to practice later in the week, while Harris’ return remains to be seen.

Inactive report for Chargers’ Week 2 matchup vs. Cowboys

The Chargers have six inactive players for their matchup against the Cowboys.

The Los Angeles Chargers are set to kickoff their home opener against the Dallas Cowboys, which also marks the first regular season game with fans in attendance at SoFi Stadium.

Here is a look at their inactives today:

DL Justin Jones (calf)

DB Chris Harris (shoulder)

QB Easton Stick

TE Tre’ McKitty

RB Joshua Kelley

OL Michael Schofield

With Jones out, Christian Covington and Eric Banks will see an uptick in snaps. Joe Gaziano was also promoted from the practice squad.

In Harris’ absence, Alohi Gilman, Trey Marshall, and Kemon Hall are a few players that can play his role in the slot.

Chargers Week 2 injury report: CB Chris Harris Jr. out, DL Justin Jones doubtful

The Chargers released the final injury report ahead of their Week 2 matchup against the Cowboys.

The Chargers had their final practice on Friday ahead of the Week 2 matchup against the Cowboys.

Cornerback Chris Harris Jr. has been ruled out with a shoulder injury.

Head coach Brandon Staley said Harris fell on his shoulder, adding that it is nothing long term and the team is just being cautious with him.

In his absence, Alohi Gilman, Trey Marshall, and Kemon Hall are a few players that could fill play his role this weekend.

Defensive lineman Justin Jones is doubtful with a calf injury.

If he can’t go, Christian Covington and Eric Banks will get more snaps, but it would not be surprising if a practice squad player, like Breiden Fehoko, Joe Gaziano or Forrest Merrill, is elevated.

Safety Nasir Adderley is questionable with a shoulder injury, but Staley is optimistic that he will play on Sunday.

Chargers place OT Bryan Bulaga on injured reserve

The veteran right tackle is going on the injured reserve.

The Los Angeles Chargers have officially placed veteran offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga on the injured reserve with a back injury, and is eligible to return in three weeks.

In correspondence, L.A. signed Michael Schofield.

Los Angeles lost Bulaga to a back injury in the third quarter of the regular season opener against Washington.

Signed last offseason, Bulaga was expected to be the heart and soul on a fairly inexperienced offensive line but instead, he spent the majority of the season on the sidelines – making 10 starts, only playing 37.87% of the offensive snaps.

Schofield, 30, has appeared in 87 career games with 69 starts. He started all 16 games for the Chargers in 2018 and 2019.

Following his two stints with the Bolts, Schofield went on to play for the Panthers and Ravens.

Barring any changes, Storm Norton will still likely get the start at right tackle this weekend against the Cowboys.

Thursday’s injury report for Chargers ahead of matchup vs. Cowboys

Players that did not participate for second straight day were safety Nasir Adderley (groin), tackle Bryan Bulaga (back), cornerback Chris Harris Jr. (shoulder) and defensive lineman Justin Jones (calf).

After missing the first practice with a toe issue, safety Derwin James returned to the action in a full capacity.

Kicker Tristan Vizcaino was added to the injury report as a limited participant due to an illness.

Los Angeles will have their final practice before the Week 2 matchup tomorrow.

Safety Nasir Adderley, tackle Bryan Bulaga, edge defender Kyler Fackrell, cornerback Chris Harris Jr., safety Derwin James and defensive lineman Justin Jones were non-participants.

Adderley sustained a shoulder injury in Week 1, but it’s his groin that’s giving him issues. Bulaga, who’s dealing with a back issue, is currently day-to-day. James was out of a practice with a toe injury.

Defensive back Trey Marshall (ankle) was a limited participant after missing the season opener.

Checking in on status of Chargers RB Austin Ekeler following Thursday’s practice

Chargers running back Austin Ekeler is still dealing with a hamstring issue.

After missing practice on Wednesday, Chargers running back Austin Ekeler was a non-participant again today.

Ekeler, who is currently dealing with a hamstring issue, had his helmet and pads on but did not participate. Instead, he just watched from the side.

According to Pro Football Focus’ Doug Kyed, the team is optimistic Ekeler can play Week 1 barring any setbacks.

Ekeler had a hamstring injury that sidelined him for six games last season, which is why this is something that should be monitored closely leading up into the season opener.

If Ekeler isn’t able to go, Justin Jackson will be handed the keys as the lead back while Joshua Kelley and Larry Rountree compliment him.

Los Angeles will practice once more on Friday before flying out to Washington.
