Chargers await OT Rashawn Slater’s return

Rashawn Slater has been out since Week 3.

The Chargers are primed for the playoffs. They are red-hot, winning their last four games. But they’re still without a key player that could ensure they make some serious noise.

Left tackle Rashawn Slater has been out since Week 3 after rupturing his biceps. Slater’s injury was initially thought of as a season-ending blow, but there is a chance of returning.

“He is still working through his return to play,” Brandon Staley said. “He’s working through things and progressing well. If he returns to play, I think that you guys will sense that momentum, in terms of how we will handle it.”

Slater has been in the facility rehabbing from his injury.

Having Slater back would be pivotal, as L.A. will be relying on Justin Herbert heavily in the playoffs, and having his blindside protected is imperative. Additionally, Slater is a major component in the run game.

However, the Chargers have to factor in his long-term health, and they don’t want to take the chance of re-injury if Slater comes back too soon.

If the team ultimately plays it safe, it will continue to be Jamaree Salyer’s job. Salyer has played 100% of the offensive snaps since Week 4. While he has had rough moments, particularly against speed rushers, Salyer has been plenty reliable for a rookie.

We now wait and see if Slater will be designated to return off injured reserve ahead of their wild-card matchup, which will take place next weekend.

Chargers’ Kyler Fackrell, Mark Webb designated to return from IR

The Chargers are getting some players back for the final stretch of the season.

The Chargers are getting a couple of players back on the practice field, as Kyler Fackrell and Mark Webb were designated to return from injured reserve.

Therefore, it allows them to practice and starts the 21-day clock to return them to the active roster.

Fackrell went on the IR after undergoing a knee procedure, as did Webb.

Fackrell has appeared in 12 games, logging 15 tackles, eight pressures, four quarterback hits, and two tackles for loss.

Webb has been active for seven contests, amassing three tackles in those.

With two games left and a playoff spot on the line, Los Angeles should benefit from any reinforcements they can get after being short-handed in their loss to the Texans.

Week 7 injury updates from Chargers HC Anthony Lynn

Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn provided updates on Austin Ekeler, Bryan Bulaga, Trai Turner and more.

To say the Chargers are injured would be an understatement.

The bye week in Week 6, however, came at the perfect time to allow players to rest and those who have missed some time to get healthier before taking the field for Los Angeles’ stretch of 11 straight games.

At Wednesday’s media availability, coach Anthony Lynn addressed the status of some key members of the team, starting with defensive tackle Justin Jones and defensive end Melvin Ingram.

Lynn said that Jones and Ingram will get some individual work this week. He added if they play then it would be on a snap count. Both guys were designated to return off the injured reserve Monday.

On the other side of the ball, guard Trai Turner and tackle Bryan Bulaga have missed a few weeks and have yet to play more than one drive together. The chances of them returning this weekend appear to be slim, as Lynn said the two “aren’t there yet.”

Without them on the field, the offensive line has struggled. Another position that has failed to put together solid production is the running back group ever since Austin Ekeler went down with a hamstring injury in the fourth week of the season.

Ekeler was placed on the IR and while reports said that it could be a six-week recovery process, he might be out longer than suggested.

Lynn said Ekeler’s return will be “later rather than sooner,” calling the hamstring injury “very serious.”

A player who appeared to be a long shot to return, but actually could is linebacker Drue Tranquill. Lynn said that Tranquill has a chance to return late this season.

Tranquill sustained a broken ankle in the season opener against the Bengals.

Chargers designate safety Adrian Phillips for return from IR

The Los Angeles Chargers designated safety Adrian Phillips for return from the injured reserve.

The Chargers have designated safety Adrian Phillips for return from injured reserve, per the league’s transaction log.

Phillips was placed on the IR on Sept. 17 after sustaining a broken forearm against the Detroit Lions.

He will have a three-week window to practice before the team must make the decision to activate him to the 53-man roster. If Los Angeles does not activate him within 21 days, he will not be eligible to play this season.

Phillips, along with his teammate Derwin James are the two players that’ll likely return. They have both been doing speed and agility drills in hopes of making a return as soon as Week 13, which is right after the team’s bye week.

Their presence will be a boost to a defense that needs reinforcements if they look to win the remaining games on their schedule, which would most likely be enough to clinch a playoff berth.
