Chargers officially sign Andre Roberts, waive K.J. Hill

The Chargers officially locked up the 12-year veteran.

The Los Angeles Chargers announced they have officially signed wide receiver/returner Andre Roberts. To make room for Roberts, the team waived WR K.J. Hill.

Hill served as the Bolts’ primary punt returner, but the third-year played amassed just 6.8 yards on six returns.

Hill is eligible to be signed to the practice squad.

Meanwhile, the Chargers are hopeful that Roberts, the 12-year veteran, can provide a spark as both a kick and punt returner.

From 2018 to 2020 with the Jets and Bills, Roberts picked up two All-Pro nods and trips to the Pro Bowl in each of those seasons.

With New York, Roberts finished with career bests for both punt and kickoff returns with 324 and 1,174 yards, respectively.

In his first season with Buffalo, Roberts returned 53 kicks for 888 yards. He followed that up with a league-leading 30.0 yards per return.

The Chargers struggled to get results in the return game for the first six weeks of the 2021 season.

Coach Brandon Staley and company knew it was a glaring issue in the thick of the team’s evaluation at the bye week, which is why they went out and signed three-time Pro Bowler Andre Roberts.

Roberts, 33, has been in the league for over a decade, and he’s established himself as a reliable return man, earning three trips to the Pro Bowl and two All-Pro nods.

Report: Chargers signing WR Andre Roberts

The Los Angeles Chargers are adding a three-time Pro Bowler.

In need of a special team spark, the Chargers are signing wide receiver Andre Roberts, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

After lacking a consistently productive return specialist, Roberts provides a major boost for Los Angeles.

Roberts, 33, was released by the Texans on Monday.

Prior to being let go of, Roberts returned eight punts for 33 yards and 18 kicks for a total of 386 yards for Houston.

Roberts led the league with 1,174 kick return yards with the Jets in 2018, and he followed that up with two solid campaigns with the Bills, which included a league-leading 30.0 yards per return in 2020.

Roberts appeared in Pro Bowls in each of those years with New York and Buffalo.

Roberts has also played with the Cardinals, Washington, Lions, and Falcons.
