The Sooners join two other teams in pursuit of Jaxson Dart; What does each offer?

Oklahoma is currently in a significant transfer portal recruiting battle with the Ole Miss Rebels and TCU Horned Frogs for QB Jaxson Dart.

Oklahoma and USC have been intertwined so much in the last two or three months you may have thought they were the fiercest of rivals. The reality is that one singular man’s decision married the programs in a way that neither probably wanted.

Lincoln Riley’s departure from Oklahoma had college landscape changing effects. Outside of the out of nowhere coaching search the Sooners undertook, the most significant ripple has been the departures each team has seen since that fateful day in November. The Sooners and Trojans’ have experienced so much player personnel coming and going that it is enough to make the calmest individual anxious and confused.

The biggest domino in this: Sooners QB Caleb Williams entered the portal and it led to Dillon Gabriel coming to Oklahoma to reunite with his former UCF coordinator in Jeff Lebby. Williams and his family were seemingly in LA visiting both UCLA and USC. Visits by Caleb and Mario Williams(also entered the transfer portal) led to folks closest to the program that there is significant reason to believe both could end up there.

On the USC side, things weren’t smooth sailing as former four-star QB Jaxson Dart, who performed admirably in the absence of Kedon Slovis with 1,353 yards and nine touchdowns against five interceptions while completing 61.9% of his throws, also entered the transfer portal.

Dart’s entry into the portal only gained traction as reports of Caleb Williams and USC uniting became a well-discussed topic amongst major college football media. As it stands both are the number one and two overall player available in 247’s transfer portal player rankings.

Oklahoma has shown Dart interest and Dart has an interest in them. According to a report from ESPN, Dart is also looking at Ole Miss and TCU

With that in mind and assuming Dart picks from one of those three let’s take a look at what each school has that could appeal most to Dart.

TCU Horned Frogs

The Horned Frogs may not be the sexy option that Oklahoma is but there’s a real reason to believe that Dart could go there, compete and be a successful quarterback. Why? The head coach has done it before with another transfer and at another school already.

Sonny Dykes has developed names like Jared Goff into the NFL and he also can boast that he helped Shane Buechele and Tanner Mordecai revitalize their careers at SMU. He knows and gets quarterbacks. That’s an undeniable fact.

He also stated that the TCU job is up for grabs this offseason. While Zack Evans transferred to Ole Miss, the Horned Frogs have a talented playmaker out wide in junior Quentin Johnston and incoming freshman Jordan Hudson as weapons for Dart. One would imagine TCU isn’t the betting favorite but they present some real opportunity.

Ole Miss Rebels

In Mississippi, Lane Kiffin waits and hopes he can do whatever he can to get Jaxson Dart on campus. Dart would immediately be the guy at Ole Miss as likely first-rounder Matt Corral is headed to the NFL Draft and John Rhys Plumlee to the transfer portal.

Currently, the only quarterback the Rebels have with any meaningful game action is like Altymer, who saw time in the Rebels Sugar Bowl loss to Baylor.

The aforementioned Zach Evans from TCU transferred to Ole Miss and it’s very plausible that Ole Miss brings in Michael Trigg, another USC transfer and supposedly a very close friend of Dart’s for a visit as well.

With Kiffin’s offensive acumen, recent film of Matt Corral success, and the path of least resistance to a starting quarterback job, the Rebels look firmly entrenched in this race.

Oklahoma Sooners

Last but certainly not least, the Oklahoma Sooners are the third team that figures to be a major factor in the race for Jaxson Dart.

Oklahoma probably has the most to offer but also probably poses Dart with the biggest obstacles to immediate playing time. However, that doesn’t seem to matter as Dart signed to play at USC despite Slovis’ presence and Miller Moss also signed. Competition doesn’t look like it scares him and if not, joining Oklahoma would be a great move.

He’d compete with Dillon Gabriel all spring and summer and assuming Gabriel won out due to familiarity and comfort in Lebby’s offensive system, Dart would be the number two guy. He would only be a play away from seeing the field and we know that he’s comfortable coming off the bench and producing. Assuming Gabriel makes it through the season with a clean bill of health, he’d then go into 2023 with four-star commit Nick Evers as his only real competition.

Lebby’s track record of developing and getting the best out of his quarterbacks speaks for itself and Oklahoma’s offensive weapons with Marvin Mims, Eric Gray, Brayden Willis, Jalil Farooq, Theo Wease, and the incoming freshmen plus the possibilities of his friend and former Trojan Michael Trigg being able to play here have to seem doubly exciting.

All told, this is a fascinating situation that has a very interesting conclusion one way or another. Does Dart presumably switch places with Caleb Williams and head for the Palace on the Prairie? Does he go to Ole Miss and try and forge something with Lane Kiffin? Or does he join the Big 12 and head to Fort Worth to do battle with Max Duggan and Chandler Morris to see who Sonny Dykes’ QB to start his tenure at TCU?

How did Oklahoma football transfers perform with their new teams in 2021?

How did former Oklahoma Sooners like Tanner Mordecai and Chandler Morris perform with their new schools in 2021?

The transfer portal has created a new era of college football akin to NFL free agency. But without the contracts. Players get much more freedom to move than they did a decade ago and are taking advantage of the opportunity to find new places to play that might provide a better chance to perform than their original home.

2021 was a good year for some former Oklahoma Sooners who departed via the portal, some making significant impacts in the chase for conference championships across college football.

Though several will still be playing in bowl games as the 2021 season winds down, let’s take a look at how Oklahoma’s transfer portal departures performed in 2021.

Oklahoma Sooners vs. Baylor Bears: Sooners Wire Staff Predictions

Get ready for Saturday’s matchup between the Oklahoma Sooners and the Baylor Bears with our Sooners Wire Staff Predictions.

On Saturday, the Oklahoma Sooners will take their 9-0 record into Waco to take on the 7-2 Baylor Bears in a game with Big 12 and College Football Playoff implications.

The Oklahoma Sooners have been knocked in the first two playoff rankings primarily because they don’t have a win over a team currently in the Top 25. Though wins over Nebraska, Texas and Kansas State were solid, the close nature of those wins rings hollow in the eyes of the committee.

Blowout wins over TCU and Texas Tech in recent weeks didn’t move the needle much either.

That changes this week as the Sooners take on the Baylor Bears, who are 13th in the College Football Playoff rankings. Though the Bears were upset by the TCU Horned Frogs last week, they dropped only one spot in the rankings.

This week is an excellent opportunity for the Oklahoma Sooners to start Championship November with a statement win over a program that’s very well balanced. The Bears have a defense capable of controlling the game and have one of the best offenses in the Big 12, led by their prolific running game.

With that, let’s take a look at this week’s Sooners Wire Staff Predictions!

5 reasons the Oklahoma Sooners win on the road against the Baylor Bears

Fresh off the bye, the Oklahoma Sooners look to continue their winning ways in Waco against the Baylor Bears. Here are 5 reasons the Sooners win Saturday.

If this was a race, the Sooners are approaching the final lap — no more cruise control, no more distance running. It’s time to pick those knees up, pump those arms and sprint to the finish line. Despite their second consecutive eighth-place ranking in the College Football Playoff rankings, the Sooners have a very real shot at making the playoffs as long as they run the table.

That starts with a win against the Baylor Bears this weekend.

The Baylor Bears are looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss to the TCU Horned Frogs. Coming off their bye week, the Sooners are looking to extend their winning streak with their trip to Waco.

To get ready for Saturday’s “Big Noon Kickoff” game on Fox, here are 5 reasons the Oklahoma Sooners win on Saturday.

Oklahoma transfer quarterback Chandler Morris wows Big 12 coaches in TCU debut

Chandler Morris led TCU’s upset win over Baylor with a big performance. Coaches around the Big 12 reacted to the Oklahoma transfer’s debut.

In his first collegiate start, TCU quarterback Chandler Morris provided a jumpstart to a program in need of some positive juice.

Morris led the way in the Horned Frogs’ 30-28 Saturday upset of Baylor. The Highland Park, Texas product completed 29-of-41 passes against the Bears and racked up 461 passing yards with a pair of touchdown passes.

As was the case at Oklahoma, Morris also demonstrated his dual-threat capabilities by rushing for 70 yards on 11 carries with a 12-yard scoring scamper sprinkled in.

Oklahoma head football coach Lincoln Riley said during the Big 12 teleconference call that he spoke with Morris and his family after the game to congratulate them. With the Sooners on a bye week, he caught part of the action himself as well.

“I did. I got to see some of it. Yeah, he played well. It was awesome to see him play so well. I know he’s been waiting on his opportunity and got an opportunity and obviously rose to the occasion. Moved around, made some big throws. It was good,” Riley said.

“It was just really cool to see him do well. We’ve got a number of guys that have ended up in other spots and we’ve got a number of guys that are doing very well at a lot of places with obviously Chandler, AK, Mordecai. Always root for those guys. Really happy to see Chandler in such a big game with all that’s going on there and playing a really good Baylor team, I was happy to see him play very well.”

TCU interim head coach Jerry Kill marveled at Morris’ debut.

“It was one of those things with Chandler where you don’t get a chance to see something like that very often in a young man’s first start the way he played. It probably goes back to being raised by his daddy and so forth, but he carried us in the game. There’s no doubt about it. We don’t win the game without what he does,” Kill said.

Kill said he and his staff knew Baylor would be difficult to run the football against and that Morris’ legs gave his offense a different dimension to game plan around.

“We knew we were going to have to do some things different. Similar to what we tried to do at Oklahoma and got beat. We tried to mix it up as much as possible, but with his speed he can move around, too, so he was an added run guy that we needed because we only had one running back,” Kill said.

Baylor head football coach Dave Aranda saw firsthand what makes Morris difficult to defend. Morris’ ability to negate a pass rush with his feet was on display and that’s been one of the issues that’s plagued the Bears.

“I think he had a really good game, you know, similar to some of the things that has been happening against us going back to Texas State really. I think you can go throughout kind of our season so far and pull examples. We talked about some of this after last week as well. These are things that while we have improved some, clearly not enough,” Aranda said.

Next up for Morris and TCU is a trip to Oklahoma State. While he hadn’t watched the tape yet as of Monday morning, Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy took notice of what Morris accomplished against Baylor.

“I’m still working on the other side of the ball. I normally don’t get to that until later in the afternoon on Monday. I saw his statistics where I think he threw for 470 and rushed for 70, so obviously they’ve found a quarterback they like that’s had a tremendous amount of success and must’ve played very, very well,” Gundy said.

Oklahoma and Riley’s impressive track record on quarterback evaluations appears like it’s continuing after Morris’ first starting performance is in the books.

How are Oklahoma football transfers performing with their new programs?

How are former Oklahoma Sooners like Tanner Mordecai doing with their new schools in 2021?

The Oklahoma Sooners have been big-time beneficiaries of the transfer portal over the years. The story on QBU’s been told, but Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts transferring in helped pave the way for Lincoln Riley’s tenure in Norman. As much as those players benefited from the transfer portal, there have been some who’ve benefited by finding a fresh start by leaving the Oklahoma Sooners and finding a new place to call home.

SMU and Tanner Mordecai were off to a 7-0 start before dropping Saturday night’s game to Houston, whose only loss came to Texas Tech in the season opener. Mordecai has played great this year and set a single-game SMU record for passing touchdowns in the opener.

After Week 9, let’s take a look at what the players Oklahoma lost in the transfer portal in 2021 have been up to this year.

Every Oklahoma Sooner added/subtracted through the transfer portal

A look at each player the Oklahoma Sooners added or lost through the transfer portal for 2021.

The transfer portal has become free agency for college football. Oklahoma Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley has added quite a bit to the team through the portal and lost his fair share as well. After added six players for the 2021 season via the transfer portal, they only signed a total of 16 players through recruiting.

With the one-time transfer rule being put in place, there will be plenty more where that came from. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, a lot of these recruits signed their letters of intent without seeing the campus or even having a face-to-face meeting with their new coaches. We could see an even larger rise in players entering the portal to find where they believe to fit best.

TCU’s Gary Patterson says Chandler Morris hasn’t been released from Oklahoma

Former Oklahoma quarterback Chandler Morris still hasn’t been released from the Sooners.

Following the end of the 2020 college football season, the Oklahoma Sooners saw plenty of action in the transfer portal. Not just the incoming players from Penn State and Tennesee, but the outgoing talent as well. Continue reading “TCU’s Gary Patterson says Chandler Morris hasn’t been released from Oklahoma”

Oklahoma QB Chandler Morris announces he will transfer

Oklahoma quarterback Chandler Morris has announced via Twitter that he will transfer away from the Sooners this offseason.

Another Oklahoma quarterback is electing to head elsewhere.

Just a couple of weeks after backup quarterback Tanner Mordecai announced he would be entering the transfer portal, fellow quarterback Chandler Morris has announced via Twitter that he will be doing the same.

Morris appeared in five games in his true freshman season in 2020, completing three of his five passes for 39 yards. Though his highlight of the year was not a pass, but a touchdown run he had to get the Sooners a quick lead in the Big 12 Championship Game.

Out of Highland Park, Texas, Morris was rated a three-star recruit by Rivals and committed to Oklahoma after originally announcing his intention to go to Arkansas where his father Chad Morris was the head coach.

A talented player with no clear path to playing time, this seems like a logical move for him and will surely have suitors across the country. Sooners Wire will update on his landing spot when the information becomes available.

Oklahoma quarterback Tanner Mordecai reportedly suffers injury during fall camp

Oklahoma football is getting hit hard early during its fall camp. The quarterback competition became a lot less competitive due to an injury

Oklahoma football is getting hit hard early during its fall camp.

The Sooners were going through a quarterback competition between Tanner Mordecai and presumed starter Spencer Rattler. The competition may have just gotten easier to figure out for unfortunate reasons.

According to a report from SoonerScoop.com, Mordecai suffered an injury during practice that won’t require surgery, but he will miss time.

Lincoln Riley has maintained that Mordecai is in the thick of this quarterback race, but missing time to the heavy favorite is not good for his potential of that.

The Waco, Texas, native came to Oklahoma in the 2018 recruiting class. He was a four-star prospect and one of the best players in Texas.

Austin Kendall was the last quarterback in the position of Mordecai. He transferred to West Virginia after losing the competition to Kyler Murray in 2018 and after Jalen Hurts arrived on campus.

Behind Mordecai is redshirt senior Tanner Schafer and true freshman Chandler Morris.
