Everything we know about the Giannis Antetokounmpo game ball drama, the silliest sports saga of the year

This was all such a massive misunderstanding.

Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo scored a career-high 64 points during a victory over the Indiana Pacers, then chaos ensued.

According to league insider Chris Haynes, the Pacers “took the game ball away” after the performance from the two-time MVP. Antetokounmpo then “took off” toward the Pacers locker room to try to retrieve the ball back from the franchise he had just defeated.

But there is more to the story and plenty to unpack with this situation.

So we did our best to gather all the information and put that together in a way that will make some sense.

Based on the reporting we have gathered, here is everything we know:

In recent conversations with the Jazz, the Lakers have targeted Bogdanović, Jordan Clarkson and Malik Beasley, according to league sources. The Lakers’ desire to land the Pacers’ Buddy Hield has also been well-chronicled, with the former Kings guard nearly coming their way via trade last summer. The 29-year-old 3-point specialist has been a focal point in the Lakers’ offseason talks with Indiana as well — alongside Myles Turner — but a deal is not expected on that front. -via The Athletic / September 16, 2022
There are no guarantees that Indiana would even do this deal — league insiders have pointed out that the price for Turner has never been fewer than multiple first-round picks. -via Los Angeles Times / September 16, 2022
At some point, probably before the February trade deadline, the Heat might need to add a helpful rotation piece instead of clinging to all its first-round draft inventory like a squirrel clenching acorns. Now is not the time to do it, not for Jae Crowder, Myles Turner or Bojan Bogdanovic. But at some point, if we get to January and the Heat looks clearly behind the Celtics and Bucks — and anybody else — it will be time to temporarily ditch the hoarding-picks-for-a-star strategy if there’s the opportunity to trade a first-rounder for a high-quality rotation piece. So yearn if you wish. But the waiting for a star seems more wishful thinking than plausible strategy at this point. If you’re going to yearn, yearn for Kyle Lowry and Victor Oladipo to return to their 2019 All-Star form. That seems more realistic, at this point, than hoping a star tries to force his team to trade him to Miami. -via Miami Herald / September 15, 2022

Pacers GM on Tyrese Haliburton: We see him as being the next Reggie Miller

While Tyrese Haliburton may not be comfortable with that label just yet, Pacers general manager Chad Buchanan has no qualms about describing Haliburton as the team’s centerpiece going forward. “We’re gonna build our team around him,” Buchanan told …

It’s not uncommon for professional athletes to have hobbies outside of their sport. Many love to golf. Others play tennis or bowl or cook. For NBA Hall of Famer and current TNT broadcaster Reggie Miller, it’s mountain biking. He recently told The Wall Street Journal’s Jason Gay that he’ll even think about his training schedule or upcoming races while he’s calling a game. Miller became so good at cycling that he races at a level just below “pro.” But Miller, 56, doesn’t think he’ll ever race professionally. -via Yahoo! Sports / July 22, 2022
“It was either sink or swim,” Miller said. “I’ll never be pro, I’m too old to be pro, but I want to be the next level down in my age group. I want to see how far I can take this. And the only way to do that is to go against the best in the 55 to 59 [age group].” -via Yahoo! Sports / July 22, 2022

Whoever made that Dame/KD photoshop was smart enough not to give him #7 and have him go back to 35. Knowing that stuff is a key to a successful jersey swaps. I’ve seen Myles Turner in a Celtics jersey wearing #33 and that kills the intrigue to me. – 4:10 PM

The market for Pacers center Myles Turner is said to feature Minnesota, Toronto and Charlotte. New York has long registered interest in Turner as well, but the Knicks are only considered to be a serious Turner suitor if Mitchell Robinson departs in free agency. -via Bleacher Report / June 23, 2022
The Pacers are seriously discussing trades centered on Malcolm Brogdon and Myles Turner, sources said. The Wizards and Knicks are interested in Brogdon, armed with the Nos. 10 and 11 picks respectively, sources said. The Hornets have expressed interest in Turner, those sources said. -via The Athletic / June 20, 2022
Myles Turner, who’s been the subject of trade rumors yet again, would like to play with Pacers point guard Tyrese Haliburton, a league source told HoopsHype. Turner is intrigued by the chance to play with Haliburton, who would be the best passing point guard Turner’s had as a teammate. Turner would also have an opportunity for the larger role he’s wanted offensively with Domantas Sabonis now in Sacramento. Turner and Haliburton never got a chance to play together last season while Turner was out with a foot injury. -via HoopsHype / June 18, 2022

Pacers, Victor Oladipo’s relationship fractured?

The Pacers fully support Oladipo and whatever he decides, although they haven’t always been on the same page. There was a fracture in the relationship after his injury in Jan. 2019, per sources. It has improved over time. And it’s good that the team has two executives down there, Kevin Pritchard and Chad Buchanan, to assist during this situation. “It’s no surprise that they backed me and they support me,” Oladipo said of the organization. “I’m just thankful that they got my back.”
