What are people saying about the Penn State-Central Michigan matchup?

So, what are people from both teams saying about this upcoming matchup? Let’s take a closer look.

Penn State is at home to take on Central Michigan in Week 4. Anything can happen, but this should be a game where the Nittany Lions win quite easily.

Penn State is favored to blow out the Chippewas in Happy Valley. Last weekend, fans from not just Penn State, but from all over the country were talking about their matchup at Auburn leading up to the game

There might not be too much buzz for this one. This wouldn’t really be a game for Penn State to be put on upset alert. Now, if they were to lose, then we would have Nittany Lion nation talking — a lot.

Last week, we also took a look at what Auburn fans were saying leading up to the big matchup that ended up being a 41-12 blowout victory for Penn State on the road.

So, what are people from both teams saying about this upcoming matchup? Let’s take a closer look.

Defensive keys to a Penn State win over Central Michigan

Here are the top three defensive keys to a Penn State win over Central Michigan.

Penn State hosts Central Michigan this weekend in a game that should be a fairly easy win for the Nittany Lions. Several analysts are predicting Penn State to have a big day at Beaver Stadium on Saturday.

The Nittany Lions have plenty of momentum leaning their way after a blowout win at Auburn last weekend. Everything was clicking on both sides of the ball.

One of the most surprising yet intriguing aspects of this Penn State team is the amount of freshmen that have played for them through the first three games of the season. Some don’t really come as too much of a surprise, like running back Nick Singleton, who has been one of the most sensational freshmen to watch thus far.

Heading over to the defensive side of the ball, Penn State has seen plenty of talented underclassmen see the field, and they have been productive. They certainly have the talent to take down Central Michigan on Saturday.

Here are the top three defensive keys to a Penn State win over Central Michigan.

Tale of the Tape: Comparing Penn State and Central Michigan

Tale of the Tape: Penn State vs. Central Michigan

Penn State returns home to Beaver Stadium this weekend for a showdown with Central Michigan. The Nittany Lions are a big favorite against its second MAC opponent of the season, and the crowd should be electric after witnessing the Nittany Lions beat Auburn to a pulp last week down south. Penn State has climbed the national rankings and the national perspective is shifting in a much more positive light for Penn State as a result.

But that doesn’t mean this is a week to let the foot off the gas pedal. Here’s how Penn State measures up against its opponent this week as the Nittany Lions look to improve to 4-0 before jumping right back into Big Ten play for the remainder of the season next week.

For statistical purposes, we are referencing stats as provided by CFBStats.com.

Who are the experts picking in Penn State’s matchup against Central Michigan?

The experts weigh in with picks for this weekend’s Penn State-Central Michigan game.

Penn State is back home to take on Central Michigan this week. They are off to an impressive start, being ranked 15th in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. However, it’s how you finish that really matters. Penn State won their first five games then went on a losing streak last season.

What’s crazy to think about is Purdue was a good test for them, but the Boilermakers aren’t really off to a hot start, after losing last-minute to Syracuse. Speaking of Syracuse, does Dino Babers get any head coaching attention for him to leave for a bigger job? You could say the same thing for Jeff Brohm from Purdue, but it’s kind of tough to argue that now after the first few games of the season.

Staying on topic here, let’s go back to Penn State and talk about their matchup this weekend against Central Michigan.

Who are the experts picking this week? Let’s take a look.

First up, we’ve got Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report. Not only does he think Penn State Beats Central Michigan. But he also thinks the team puts up 45 points. Penn State handily defeated Auburn on the road last week and they held Tank Bigsby to just 39 rushing yards. A redemption game for Penn State’s defense after giving up over 100 yards to him in last season’s matchup. Miller predicts the Nittany Lions to beat Central Michigan with a score of 45–20.

Next up we have the writers over at Athlon Sports. Of the three writers, all of them had Penn State taking down Central Michigan on Saturday.

Next up, we have the writers of the Buckeyes Wire. Every week of the college football season, their staff has been predicting the winners of each matchup from the college wires. This week, they are taking the Nittany Lions to defeat the Chippewas of Central Michigan.

This will be another non-conference matchup for Penn State, and it should be an easy one for them. The Nittany Lions had this momentum last year for the first few games of the season. Yes, their level of competition they have played hasn’t been great. But they have a lot of momentum their way right now.

Central Michigan Chippewas Preview 2022

This is going well under head coach Jim McElwain.

He might have had a rough landing as he got bounced out from the Florida job, but he got the Gators to two straight SEC Championship games.

In his three years at CMU he and the program won at least a share of two division titles, went to two bowls, and has a solid 20-13 record overall and a 15-7 clip in conference.

No, he and the Chippewas haven’t been able to take that extra step and win the conference title, and that’s going to be a whole lot harder to do this year.

The team is good, the coaching is great, but the success has been a slight problem as teams have poached the program for some of the top talents, especially on defense. Combine that with the NFL losses on the offensive line, and this isn’t going to be easy.

Rebuilding isn’t all that new, though, for Central Michigan and McElwain. The team will still be a player in the MAC race.

Central Michigan Chippewas Preview 2022: Offense

The offense managed to crank up enough to efficiently get the job done. The Chippewas were 24th in the nation in total offense, the running game was good, the passing attack was the second-best in the MAC, and the production was steady over the second half of the season. But …

The offensive line loses some massive parts. The interior is good with decent size and depth, but you don’t get better after losing tackles the caliber of Bernhard Raimann (Indianapolis Colts) and Luke Goedeke (Tampa Bay Buccaneers).

The backfield gets back leading rusher Lew Nichols – he ran for 1,848 yards and 16 touchdowns – and welcomes back Kobe Lewis from a knee injury that cost him last season.

Veteran QB Daniel Richardson isn’t too much of a runner, but he was terrific as he grew into the job as a passer last season, throwing for 2,583 yards and 24 touchdowns with just six picks. Now he needs more options to throw to.

Leading receiver Kalil Pimpleton is off trying to become a Detroit Lion and JaCorey Sullivan is gone, but Dallas Dixon is back after making 45 catches for 701 yards and eight scores. Junior Joel Wilson will once again be one of the MAC’s best pass-catching tight ends.

Central Michigan Chippewas Preview 2022: Defense

The defense got poached, and it’s going to hurt. Star safety Devonni Reed (South Carolina), LB Troy Brown (Ole Miss), and LB George Douglas (SMU) are gone along with leading tackler Greg Kreski and top pass rushers Troy Hairston (Houston Texans) and Amir Saddiq (Charlotte).

The D was the best in the nation at coming up with tackles for loss and was fourth in sacks. It led the MAC against the run, but it was hammered through the air. On the plus side …

The secondary has enough experience to potentially be okay. At the very least, the veteran corners are in place and the safeties have good size – even if they’re a little green. They all need help from the defensive front that has to rotate in new parts. There’s decent size in the interior, and the new ends are hybrids who’ll keep on coming.

The linebacking corps is undergoing the biggest overhaul. Sophomore Kyle Moretti is a 230-pound sophomore who made 48 tackles, sophomore Justin Whiteside got in enough work to be ready, but the developed depth isn’t there.

Game-by-game predictions for Penn State football in 2022

It’s time to go on the record with some game-by-game predictions for 2022.

The start of a brand new college football season is quickly approaching, so it is time to officially go on the record with some game-by-game predictions. We’ll be sharing our official staff predictions for Penn State’s upcoming season soon, but I am officially on the record already, so I’ll show my cards to you now.

I took part in providing my game-by-game predictions for Penn State’s 2022 season with the folks over at Athlon Sports this week. It turns out my predicted record was spot-on with the two other experts sharing their opinions for Athlon Sports. The three of us combined for identical 9-3 record predictions for Penn State this fall, although we arrived at those predictions in slightly different ways.

You can see the full post over at Athlon Sports, but here are my game-by-game predictions for Penn State’s 2022 season and a quick thought or two about my prediction.

Nittany Lions Wire Roundtable: Biggest game in September

Purdue or Auburn? Our staff weighs in on which September game is the most important for Penn State.

As we begin to move closer to the start of a new college football season in Happy Valley, the staff at Nittnay Lions Wire is spending some time sounding off on some big questions facing the Nittany Lions this fall. Today’s focus is the biggest game in the first month of the season.

This question boils down to two distinct options, with both being a road game. Penn State opens the season on Thursday, Sept. 1 at Purdue and will play at Auburn in a return trip of a home-and-home deal in Week 3. Penn State also plays home games against Central Michigan and Ohio in September.

Here is what our staff had to say about the biggest game in September, but feel free to share with us your thoughts on Twitter or Facebook.

Sam Dehring, Contributor
@sam_dehring68

September should be a fairly easy set of games for Penn State. If I had to pick a game that would be most important game for the first month, I would have to say Auburn.

It’s fairly close between Auburn and their season opener against Purdue. Though I’m not very high at all on Auburn this year, I think the fact that they’re playing that game on the road will make it tough.

Last year, Penn State took down Auburn 28-20 in the white-out game. Clifford went 28/32 with 280 yards, a touchdown, and an interception all while putting up an 89.9 quarterback rating. However, that game was much from their defensive success.

Overall, for the Nittany Lions to beat Auburn again this season, they are going to need consistency on both sides of the ball.

Kevin McGuire, Editor
@KevinOnCFB

As much as I am looking forward to seeing Penn State play at Aubrun, the bigger game has to be the season opener on the road against a conference opponent. And not just any Big Ten opponent, but one that plays tough at home and knocked off a couple of highly-ranked opponents last fall.

Purdue is not the ideal opponent to play on the road to start the season, so Penn State will absolutely be put to the test right out of the gates of the season. For the third straight season, Penn State is opening the season on the road against a conference opponent, and this one won’t be easy either.

The value of a conference win is much higher than a road win against Auburn. A win at Auburn may draw more attention, but starting the season off with a Big Ten win in a year that Penn State hopes to move back up the Big Ten standings cannot be oversold to me. If Penn State is only going to win one of these games, it has to be the Purdue game to start the season.

But winning both would be great too.
