WATCH: Celtics were not close to Nikola Vucevic or Aaron Gordon trades

Boston never got close to the deals that ultimately pried Aaron Gordon and Nikola Vucevic free from the Orlando Magic, it’s reported.

The Boston Celtics were not as close as some might have supposed at the 2021 NBA trade deadline to landing either Orlando Magic star forward Aaron Gordon or his teammate All-Star big man Nikola Vucevic, according to The Athletic’s Josh Robbins.

Speaking on the latest episode of the CLNS “A-List” podcast hosted by Kwani A. Lunis and A. Sherrod Blakely, the trio dove into the trade rumors suggesting the Celtics were trying to get in on a deal for either of the Magic front court denizens at the deadline. With Boston not even close to the package offered by the Chicago Bulls for Vucevic and unwilling to operate in the same sphere of assets as did the Denver Nuggets for Gordon, rumored Celtics involvement was at a much lower level than thought in some corners.

Whether that’s a good thing largely depends on the eye of the beholder.

After reportedly missing on Vucevic, Gordon, is Ainge still ‘Trader Danny’?

It might be time to reassess the nickname.

Perhaps we ought to reassess the popular nickname ‘Trader Danny’ for Boston Celtics team president Danny Ainge after news the former Celtic star and current general manager ended up missing out on not only widely-reported 2021 trade target Aaron Gordon of the Orlando Magic, but also their All-Star center Nikola Vucevic, according to the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach.

While these Monday morning quarterbacking analyses have to be taken from the point of view that we never really know how the trade negotiations went, the familiar refrain of just how close Ainge got to a deal is a trope as stale as Boston’s late-game offense has been in recent weeks.

Which is to say, very.

Report: Aaron Gordon ‘eager’ for Celtics trade, but Nuggets a serious alternative

The negotiations could go down to the wire.

The competition for Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon is starting to heat up, but the Boston Celtics remain in the mix for the Arizona product.

Gordon is reportedly “eager” to be dealt to the Celtics according to The Athletic’s Jared Weiss, but Boston faces real competition from clubs like the Portland Trail Blazers and Denver Nuggets — and win-now moves being made by the Sacramento Kings suggest oft-mentioned target Harrison Barnes is no longer a viable option. Weiss relates that the Atlanta Hawks may want to hang on to John Collins as well, meaning the forward market the Celtics are working with has contracted sharply in the last 24 hours.

Boston may well have to increase its offer to remain in the game.

Report: Boston remains in talks for Gordon, but Nugs emerging as trade favorites

Will the Celtics up the ante ahead of Thursday’s deadline, pivot or stand pat?

The Boston Celtics are reportedly still in the running to land Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon according to new reporting, but may need to add some shine to their current offer to retain pole position for the Magic star.

Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer relates that while the Celtics “remain engaged in Aaron Gordon talks,” the Denver Nuggets have “now emerged as the leading candidate to acquire Gordon from Orlando, with a package centered around Gary Harris.” With reporting today that Boston had been offering a first-round pick and a young player (Brian Robb of MassLive reports it would be either Romeo Langford or Aaron Nesmith), it seems there must be multiple first-round picks given the Michigan State product is having the worst season of his career since his rookie campaign.

It is also possible this is information being leaked to push Boston to get the deal across the finish line.

Whatever the case, teams have until 3 p.m. tomorrow, March 25 to get a deal of any sort called in, with reporting to come within an hour or two beyond that.

Mannix: ‘Boston in heavy in on Gordon, Barnes’ for potential trade targets

The Celtics seem determined to pick up a forward n the trade market.

The Boston Celtics remain focused on Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon and Sacramento Kings forward Harrison Barnes as the 2021 NBA trade deadline draws near according to Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix.

Noting that the Celtics seem poised to use “some or all of its $28.5 million trade exception” generated by the departure of veteran forward Gordon Hayward in the offseason, Mannix relates that the team has “swapped offers with Orlando and have shown a willingness to deal All Defensive team guard Marcus Smart” to the likely chagrin of many fans. However it does not seem certain the Magic are locks to want to take on the Flower Mound native so readily.

The reasoning? It is “in part because Orlando has no interest in winning, in part because Smart may chafe at joining a rebuilding team,” according to the SI analyst.

Stein: Boston may pivot to ‘more affordable options’ like Kings’ Bjelica, Raps’ Powell

A crowded trade market for forwards may see Boston reassess its plans, according to one renowned analyst.

While the Boston Celtics remain in pursuit of forwards like Aaron Gordon of the Orlando Magic and Harrison Barnes of the Sacramento Kings, it seems that the New York Times’ Marc Stein believes the Celtics might consider a pivot to “more affordable options” to improve their roster in his latest newsletter.

The New York Times analyst relates how the Celtics have “duly pursued a variety of big men whose teams are resistant to deals” in the hopes of reigniting their contention hopes after a stumbling season has disappointed in the win column. And with a host of other teams driving up the cost of certain targets like Barnes and Gordon in recent days, Stein implies that Boston may reassess who it ends up going after despite being focused on the latter swing of late.

Those more affordable options? “Sacramento’s Nemanja Bjelica or Toronto’s Norman Powell.”

Odds of Smart in Gordon trade may be shrinking, though Cs remain ‘in pursuit’

It sounds like Marcus Smart has better odds of staying a Celtic while Boston remains in pursuit of several trade targets.

While it seems there is still a very realistic chance the Boston Celtics land Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon in a deal ahead of the 2021 NBA trade deadline on March 25, at least one analyst who has been breaking news about any such potential exchange between the two East teams suggests the odds of veteran guard Marcus Smart being part of the deal are shrinking.

The Action Network’s Matt Moore related on Twitter that he doesn’t “believe Marcus Smart winds up in a Gordon trade (IF it happens),” based on what he has heard about the deal in recent hours.

Moore was one of several insiders relaying news about trade negotiations between Boston and Orlando regarding a Gordon deal on Monday.

WATCH: NBA insider says the Celtics are a PERFECT fit for Aaron Gordon

Jared Weiss of the Athletic has some strong feelings about Aaron Gordon’s fit with Boston.

It’s clear the Boston Celtics are interested in adding Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon to the team ahead of the 2021 NBA trade deadline, but how good of a fit is the Orlando swing?

Gordon’s camp wants a trade before the deadline passes, enticing suitors like the Portland Trail Blazers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets and of course the Celtics, with Gordon intent on playing for a contender. Jared Weiss announced Gordon’s long-held intention of escaping Orlando on a recent episode of the CLNS podcast “Celtics Beat,” calling Gordon a perfect fit for the Celtics, who posses a $28.5 million traded player exception (TPE).

Weiss also maintained the possibility that the Celts could also acquire John Collins from the Hawks in another related Trade deadline rumor, though it seems for now Gordon is the focus.

Report: Magic’s Aaron Gordon ‘not the only name the Celtics are chasing’

Boston is rumored to have several targets of serious interest.

Word on the street on the trade deadline front is that the Boston Celtics have more than one iron in the fire, as the old adage goes.

Monday night, it became clear the Celtics were trying to be players on the trade market in earnest when news the team was matching an offer by the Houston Rockets of two first round picks for Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon, with wing Evan Fournier a possible inclusion. Boston had been tied to other prospects as well over the prior 24 hours ranging from John Collins and Bogdan Bogdanovic of the Atlanta Hawks to Norman Powell of the Toronto Raptors and Nemanja Bjelica of the Sacramento Kings.

Now we are hearing they have multiple serious pursuits in mind.
