I suggest anyone playing this line wait until the status of Williamson is known. Without Williamson, I would pass on the Pelicans.

However, If he plays, they should be a strong play. The Pelicans crash the glass at the 7th-highest rate in the NBA, rank 9th in turnover rate and sit 12th in effective field goal percentage.

The Celtics don’t turn the ball over and shoot efficiently as well, but the key should be how they defend Tatum. F Herb Jones and Ingram have massive wingspans and should be able to do a better job than most others.

Playing at home, consistently proving to be solid on the glass and having quality, lengthy defenders, back PELICANS (+120) here if Williamson is active.

Against the spread

PASS.

I would rather take New Orleans to win outright at plus money. It has had 1 loss of under 3 points this season which justifies backing the moneyline over the spread.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 229.5 (-110).

The Pelicans have the defenders to make life difficult for the Celtics. Similarly, neither team plays at a high pace and that will undoubtedly impact the total. The Pelicans rank 18th in pace with the Celtics 17th.

The Celtics are 9-5-1 O/U and the Pelicans are 9-6 O/U which should suggest regression is primed, and considering Smart could be back as well, back the UNDER 229.5 (-110).

The Celtics are just .500 this season and haven’t shown enough to comfortably back at -230. Similarly, the Pelicans will likely be down one or both of their stars, making their money line also not favorable for bettors.

Against the spread

BET on the CELTICS -5.5 (-112).

Boston is coming off a loss, and it’s a get-right spot for a team that’s far more talented on both ends of the court.

Despite Big V and Ingram playing, along with nursing a double-digit first-half lead, the Celtics still covered on MLK Day as Boston won 104-92. As noted, Boston has been able to beat up on teams in this spot so far this season.

The Celtics’ issues this season have come with scoring the ball, as seen by F Jayson Tatum‘s 5-for-17 performance against the Hawks in his last outing. He’ll improve to his mean against a Pelicans team allowing 110 points per game.

With that in mind, I’ll take the Boston to cover as it did earlier in the season.

Over/Under

PASS on the total with a slight lean to the Under 213.5. Both of these teams are inconsistent offensively, one reason the Pelicans are just 20-27-1 O/U and the Celtics are 21-28-1.

That bodes well to the Under, but at the same time, the sporadic nature also could see Boston hit well into the 120s, which is why I’d prefer to just play the Celtics spread in this position.

PASS with a slight lean on Pelicans (+125) because I like New Orleans plus the points and sometimes I’ll sprinkle on an underdog’s money line if taking them to cover.

However, since the beginning of last season, New Orleans has won just 30.3% of its games a road ‘dog with a minus-7.5-point average margin.

Against the spread (ATS)

New Orleans’ aggressiveness will help it hang around in this one. According to CleaningTheGlass.com, the Pelicans attempt the 2nd-highest rate of shots at the rim while the Celtics are 27th in defensive field goal percentage of attempts at the rim.

Also, New Orleans runs and scores the most putback points and putback plays per miss, per CleaningTheGlass.com, and scores the 2nd-most second-chance points per game. These are areas of struggle for Boston who give up the 2nd-most putback points per play and is 26th in opponent’s second-chance points per game.

Finally, the Pelicans have the 4th-highest free-throw attempt rate and the Celtics are 27th in defense FT/FGA rate. BET PELICANS +2.5 (-105) for a half-unit.

Over/Under (O/U)

There are a couple of reasons to like both offenses in this matchup. Boston is a top-10 3-point shooting team and New Orleans has the 28th-ranked 3-point shooting defense.

And in transition, Boston is 2nd in both points per possession and effective field goal percentage whereas New Orleans is bottom-5 in both metrics on the defensive end of the floor.

Furthermore, New Orleans has an above-average shooting percentage on mid-range jumpers whereas Boston is 24th in defensive field goal percentage on mid-range attempts, according to CleaningTheGlass.com.

OVER 231.5 (-115) for 1 unit is my favorite play in Celtics-Pelicans.
