Bucs go with LSU’s K’Lavon Chaisson in latest CBS Sports mock draft

See why Pete Prisco of CBS Sports thinks the Bucs will turn to LSU’s K’Lavon Chaisson in April’s 2020 NFL draft.

One of the biggest brights spots for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019 was the strength of their rush defense, which ranked first in the NFL, allowing just 73.8 yards per game, over 13 yards less than the team ranked second in rush defense, the New York Jets (86.9).

Not only were the Bucs dominant in stopping the run, but their pass rush was equally scary, as linebacker Shaq Barrett led the NFL with 19.5 sacks. Barrett is likely going to earn himself a hefty new deal from the Bucs this offseason, but he’s not the only edge player hitting the open market for the Bucs. That’s why Pete Prisco of CBS Sports has the Bucs taking edge K’Lavon Chaisson out of LSU in his latest mock draft.

Per Prisco:

“The Bucs have three free agents among their edge players, including Shaq Barrett, who had 19.5 sacks last season. Chaisson is a raw, athletic player who has the speed off the edge.”

Several other mock drafts have Chaisson going to the Bucs. It worked out well for Tampa Bay last year in the first round when they took an LSU star in linebacker Devin White. Stick with what works, I guess.

These 3 CBS Sports mock drafts shows the Bucs could go a number of ways

See what draft analysts over at CBS Sports believe could happen at the 14th spot for the Buccaneers in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Another day, another set of mock drafts.

We’ve seen both Daniel Jeremiah’s and Mel Kiper Jr.’s mocks this week, and while each expert predicted the Bucs would address needs on offense, they differed on which player would be selected.

Today, we have three mock drafts from CBS Sports’ draft experts, and again, the Bucs’ selection is all over the place, with each analyst going a different route.

Ryan Wilson believes Tampa Bay will take linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson out of LSU:

“The Bucs’ 2019 draft class was defense-heavy and the results were immediate; the unit was the No. 5 defense in the league but the D-line could look completely different next season; Ndamukong Suh, Jason Pierre-Paul and Rakeem Nunez-Roches are all soon-to-be free agents. Chaisson will need to add 10 pounds to his frame but he’s already an explosive, disruptive presence off the edge.”

Chris Trapasso think the selection at 14 will be Alabama safety Xavier McKinney:

“More youthful secondary pieces for the Buccaneers, a team with a defense no one wanted to play down the stretch. McKinney does everything well.”

Josh Edwards is the only analyst who thinks the selection will be one for the offense, as he predicts the Bucs taking Mekhi Becton

“Becton is a large human being and it shocks people how well he moves for his size. There are some aspects of his game that need to be cleaned up but the sky is the limit. Tampa Bay adds some talent on the edge.”

It’ll be interesting to see where Becton actually goes come draft time. Mel Kiper’s mock had him going No. 10 to the Cleveland Browns, while Jeremiah had Becton going as high as No. 4 to the New York Giants.

CBS Sports’ new mock draft has the Buccaneers taking this SEC running back

Find out which star SEC running back could be on his way to the Buccaneers come the 2020 NFL Draft.

For teams like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who missed out on the postseason, April’s NFL draft will provide them a chance to reload on talent and find that missing piece to help get them back to the playoffs. (Well, maybe.)

While there is still plenty of time between now and April, it’s never too early to get a jump on the all-important mock drafts. It’s the one thing that keeps fans going through the offseason since, after all, it’s also never too early to get a jump on potential fantasy prospects for next season.

Which brings us to the latest 2020 mock draft, courtesy of Josh Edwards of CBS Sports. Unlike other mocks that have had the Bucs leaning towards defense again, Edwards opts for a more offensive approach for Tampa Bay, who holds the 14th pick. Edwards thinks the Bucs will take SEC running back D’Andre Swift.

Here’s what Edwards had to say:

“In an ideal world, Tampa Bay would add an offensive tackle or a cornerback. Quarterback can not be ruled out based on recent comments from Bruce Arians. All of that being considered, Swift is the best talent available.”

That would certainly be a major get for the Bucs, considering running back is still a position of need. It took until Week 17 for running back Ronald Jones to have his first-career 100-yard game for the Bucs. Jones, the former second-round pick, is still young, but Swift has playmaker written all over him. He had 1,218 rushing yards on 196 carries to go along with seven touchdowns.

CBS Sports’ 2020 mock draft is a real head-scratcher when it comes to the Bucs

Find out who the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are predicted to select in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 4-7 right now, with the playoffs looking like nothing more than a pipe dream.

When the season does finally come to an end, the Buccaneers will have to face several tough questions, the primary one being what to do with quarterback Jameis Winston.

Winston, who is playing on the fifth and final year of his rookie contract, hasn’t lived up to expectations this season, having already thrown a league-high 20 interceptions. The guy with the second-most interceptions this season? Philip Rivers with 14.

Should the team decide that it’s time to move on from Winston, the 2020 NFL Draft is one place they could look to for their quarterback of the future. But, several mock drafts have shown the Bucs going in a direction other than quarterback.

In last week’s mock draft, CBS Sports had offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs headed to Tampa Bay. This week, Wirfs has moved up into the top 5, going to the Denver Broncos.

The Bucs, projected now to pick 12th, again pass on a quarterback in CBS’ latest mock, opting to go with an offensive tackle, but their choice is a bit of a head-scratcher.

Right now, CBS has Tampa Bay taking offensive tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. out of Alabama. Here’s their reasoning:

“Demar Dotson is 34 years old and whomever ends up under center next season for the Bus will need to be protected. Tampa’s O-line came into the week ranked 20th in run blocking and 22nd in pass protection, according to Football Outsiders. Wills has had a solid 2019 campaign for Alabama and could end up going higher in the draft than teammate Alex Leatherwood.”

Don’t get me wrong, the Buccaneers need to upgrade their O-line, but Wills seems like a bit of a reach, especially when you consider CBS currently has him ranked as the 80th-best prospect in the draft and eighth at his position.

Seems like the Buccaneers could find better value at that spot, especially if a top-rated quarterback prospect like Justin Herbert is available.

Stay tuned…
