Notre Dame breaks two-game losing streak with overtime win over Texas

Back on track in a big way.

Notre Dame and Texas was billed as a game to watch in this year’s ACC/SEC Challenge, and it definitely lived up to the hype. The problem with that was the Irish needed to sweat it out to try and overcome its disastrous two games in the Cayman Islands Classic.

The Irish took all they could handle from the Longhorns, but it was enough to get them back on track. They’ll head into their ACC opener against Syracuse coming off an 80-70 overtime victory.

The Irish (6-2) were in control for much of the game after the first quarter, but the Longhorns (7-1) came alive to begin the fourth, and the teams engaged in a back-and-forth throughout that frame.

[autotag]Olivia Miles[/autotag] broke a tie with what appeared to be the game-winning layup in the final seconds, but [autotag]Liatu King[/autotag] fouled Rori Harmon with one second left and the Irish in the penalty. Harmon hit both free throws to tie it back up. The Irish called a timeout to set up a game-winning shot, but [autotag]Hannah Hidalgo[/autotag]’s corner 3 missed everything, necessitating free basketball.

Kyla Oldacre scored the first basket of overtime 15 seconds in, but that proved to account for the Longhorns’ final points of the game as they missed their final 10 shots. Four of those misses came from Madison Booker, who wasted a 20-point effort.

The Irish were happy to take advantage as their overtime showing was highlighted by 3s from Hidalgo and [autotag]Sonia Citron[/autotag]. The Longhorns couldn’t answer as they simply had run out of gas:

Hidalgo scored a season-high 30 points. Miles and Citron both scored 18 with Citron collecting a career-high seven steals. King achieved a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Notre Dame women’s basketball drops to No. 3 seed in ESPN bracketology

The Irish’s perception continues to suffer.

The Notre Dame women’s basketball team lost both games it played in the Cayman Islands Classic to TCU and Utah. In doing so, it seriously hurt its perception among those who follow women’s basketball for a living.

Not only did the Irish drop seven spots in the latest AP Top 25 poll from third to 10th, further than any other team, but they fell in Charlie Creme’s latest bracketology for ESPN. After a road win over USC allowed them to ascend to a No. 1 seed, they have fallen to a No. 3 seed.

What’s more, the Irish are in the quadrant featuring UConn, the top overall seed in this bracketology. Meanwhile, the Horned Frogs have been bumped up to a No. 2 seed.

While the Irish remain highly ranked, this past week has led many to believe they aren’t as good as previously thought. The good news is it’s early in the season still, and there’s plenty of time to convince people to come back around on them. But it might become harder if they don’t beat at least one of Texas or the Huskies in two of their next three games.

Notre Dame women’s basketball drops seven spots in latest AP Top 25

The Irish have a storm to navigate.

The Notre Dame women’s basketball team had a very damaging Thanksgiving weekend. After getting swept in the Cayman Islands Classic by TCU and Utah, the voters in the first AP Top 25 Poll of December were not sympathetic.

The Irish dropped seven spots in the latest poll from No. 3 to No. 10. That was the biggest fall of any team from the previous poll. Meanwhile, the Horned Frogs had the biggest jump of any team from that poll, ascending from No. 17 to just past the Irish at No. 9. The Utes didn’t crack the poll but received five votes after not accumulating any in the previous week.

Just when the Irish were riding high after beating USC on the road, reality has hit them hard. It’s a reminder that this season might not be as smooth a ride as many thought it would be. The test for them now is responding well to this setback beginning with their game against No. 5 Texas in the ACC/SEC Challenge.

Notre Dame women’s basketball swept during Cayman Islands Classic

Well, this certainly isn’t a pleasant way to get your first two losses.

The Notre Dame women’s basketball team got a rude awakening during the Cayman Islands Classic over Thanksgiving weekend. It’s hard to know if the tropical setting affected the Irish, but what is known is that the Irish won’t just cruise to a national championship.

One day after the Irish suffered their first loss of the season, a 76-68 decision to a ranked and undefeated TCU team, they lost, 78-67, to a Utah team that wasn’t even receiving votes in the latest poll. That drops the Irish to 5-2 on the season, and they most definitely will drop from their No. 3 ranking in the latest poll.

It was a real disappointment for the Irish after defeating USC in its own building, and the schedule won’t get any easier. They next face Texas in the ACC/SEC Challenge, which will come ahead of their ACC opener against Syracuse and then a game against fellow blue blood UConn.

This is a true test for the Irish, and how they tackle it will say a lot about them.

Notre Dame women’s basketball receives No. 1 votes in AP Top 25 poll

The Irish are getting close to the top.

The Notre Dame women’s basketball team is looking stronger than ever, and people are starting to notice. After a huge victory in a much-anticipated game at USC over the weekend, the Irish received three No. 1 votes in the latest AP Top 25 Poll. They also moved up the rankings from six to third.

The top of the latest poll had some serious movement. After UCLA knocked off top-ranked South Carolina over the weekend, it became the new No. 1 team in the country. The Gamecocks slipped to fourth, one spot below the Irish, and the Trojans fell to sixth, one spot behind Texas. UConn remained at No. 2 from the previous week.

After the Irish play two games at the Cayman Islands Classic this weekend, they’ll return home to play the Longhorns in the ACC/SEC Challenge, open ACC play against Syracuse and then host the Huskies. After that slate, we’ll know a lot more about what we can expect from the Irish this season.

Notre Dame will face TCU, Utah during Cayman Islands Classic

The Irish have some business to do Thanksgiving weekend.

The only part of Notre Dame’s schedule that wasn’t know before Tuesday was its opponents for the Cayman Island Classic. We knew this tournament meant the Irish would spend Thanksgiving weekend together, but we didn’t know which other teams lined up would face them. Wonder no longer.

The Irish will face TCU on Nov. 29, then have a meeting with Utah on Nov. 30. Both teams previously have played the Irish three times in the history and lost every single time. The Horned Frogs last lost to the Irish in 2016, while the Utes were knocked out of the 2011 NCAA Tournament.

Among the notable storylines here is that the Irish will face Frogs transfer Hailey Van Lith, a two-time First Team All-ACC selection during her days at Louisville, where she went 5-2 against the Irish. She played last season with defending champion LSU, which fell to Caitlin Clark and Iowa in the Elite Eight.

Let’s hope the Irish will be ready for some fun in the sun over the holiday. More importantly, let’s hope that fun includes a couple of wins.

LSU’s Aneesah Morrow named ESPN Player of the Week

Aneesah Morrow led the team to a 2-0 record in the Cayman Islands.

With [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] currently away from the LSU women’s basketball team for undisclosed reasons, [autotag]Aneesah Morrow[/autotag] has really stepped things up. After an impressive three-game stretch, she was named the ESPN Player of the Week.

Morrow started the week with a 17-point, seven-steal and four-rebound game against Texas Southern, but she took her game to the next level in the Cayman Islands Classic.

She had a 28-point, 10-rebound double-double in the win over Niagara, and in a three-point win over Virginia, she had 37 points and 16 rebounds as she led the Tigers to a win to close out its run in the islands.

She was also named the SEC Player of the Week and the Ann Myers Drysdale USBWA Player of the Week.

Instant Analysis: LSU rolls to sixth-straight win in Cayman Islands opener vs. Niagara

The Tigers began their run in the Cayman Islands Classic on a high note.

LSU’s women’s basketball team started its run at the Cayman Islands Classic, winning its sixth game in a row as it took down Niagara 99-65 in the opener. Next up will be a matchup against Virginia on Saturday as the team closes out its two-game run.

Even without [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] and [autotag]Kateri Poole[/autotag], who didn’t make the trip to the Cayman Islands, LSU shot nearly 60% as a team with [autotag]Aneesah Morrow[/autotag] leading the way with a game-high 28 points. [autotag]Hailey Van Lith[/autotag] (20), [autotag]Mikaylah Williams[/autotag] (19) and [autotag]Flau’Jae Johnson[/autotag] (14) all scored in double figures.

The Purple Eagles turned the ball over 30 times to LSU’s 21, and the Tigers led by as much as 42 in the game.

It was a dominating performance, and it’s one Kim Mulkey’s team will look to replicate when it takes on an ACC opponent Saturday.

LSU women’s basketball’s Angel Reese, Kateri Poole didn’t travel to Cayman Islands

The Tigers will be without their biggest star once again the Cayman Islands.

The Tigers will be without two key players as star forward [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag], as well as rotational player [autotag]Kateri Poole[/autotag], did not make the trip to the Cayman Islands Classic. Both missed Friday’s opener against Niagara, and they will also miss Saturday’s game against Virginia.

The news was first reported by ESPN.

Reese is now set to miss at least four games since she was benched in the second half of a win over Kent State. It’s currently unclear why either is currently away from the team, and coach [autotag]Kim Mulkey[/autotag] has declined to go into detail regarding Reese’s status multiple times.

Both players’ statuses will certainly be something to watch as the Tigers face a top-10 team in Virginia Tech after returning from the islands.

LSU women’s basketball’s Cayman Islands Classic opponents revealed

LSU will face Niagara on Nov. 24 and Virginia the following day.

The LSU women’s basketball team will be heading down to the tropics over Thanksgiving break as the team competes in the Cayman Islands Classic. Now, the Tigers know who they will face in those contests.

LSU will face Niagara on Nov. 24 at 12:30 p.m. CT followed by a matchup against Virginia the following day at 4 p.m. Both contests will take place at John Gray Gymnasium in George Town, Cayman Islands.

Niagara is coming off an 18-13 season and appearance in the WNIT. The Cavaliers went 15-15 last season and were invited to the WNIT but ultimately declined with too few players available due to injury.

After landing a pair of elite transfers in [autotag]Hailey Van Lith[/autotag] and [autotag]Aneesah Morrow[/autotag] to pair with returning stars [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] and [autotag]Flau’Jae Johnson[/autotag], the Tigers will likely begin the year as the preseason No. 1 team and favorite to repeat as national champions.
