Former Notre Dame infielder Cavan Biggio traded to Los Angeles Dodgers

Hope he does well with his new team.

[autotag]Cavan Biggio[/autotag] wasn’t out of an MLB job for very long. Less than a week after the Toronto Blue Jays designated the former Notre Dame infielder and son of Baseball Hall of Famer Craig Biggio for assignment, a trade partner was found in the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Blue Jays traded Biggio to the Dodgers for minor-league pitcher Braydon Fisher. So basically, Biggio is swapping one blue uniform for another and will be in a much better position going to a World Series contender.

Biggio is in his sixth MLB season and has spent his entire professional career with the Blue Jays until now. This year has been a struggle for him as he’s slashed .200/.323/.291 for a career-worst .614 OPS over 44 games. Perhaps going into a situation where he won’t be pressured or expected to do as much on a stacked roster will be beneficial for him.

Best of luck to Biggio in his new surroundings.

Former Notre Dame Baseball Star Gets DFA’d by Blue Jays

Tough season for the former Domer

Former Notre Dame baseball star [autotag]Cavan Biggio[/autotag] has been designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays.

Biggo was originally called up by the Blue Jays back in 2019 and has spent parts of the last six seasons with the squad.

This year Biggio is hitting just .200 with a .323 on-base percentage while slugging only .291, easily the lowest of his career.

Biggio has played in 490 games for the Blue Jays in his six seasons, recording 336 hits and scoring 246 runs.  He hit 16 home runs in his debut season but never more than nine in a single season since.

Biggio, the son of Hall of Famer Craig Biggio, starred at Notre Dame from 2014-2016, getting on base at a .406 clip and totaling an OPS over .800 with the Fighting Irish.

Biggio will sit in a holding pattern for the next seven days as the Blue Jays have the option to either waive him or trade him, all depending on if any claims are made for him.

Former Notre Dame players currently in Major League Baseball

Who was your favorite at Notre Dame?

As the sun has finally decided to start to come out across the midwest this spring it finally is starting to feel like baseball season, even if the big leaguers have been underway for a solid month now.

Notre Dame is in the middle of another successful campaign under head coach Link Jarrett that should see them reach the NCAA Tournament again after being one win away from a College World Series appearance last season.

What about the Notre Dame baseball stars of yesterday though?  How many might you find if you’re flipping around and stumble into MLB Network or a random baseball game this summer?

Here are the six former Notre Dame baseball players currently on Major League Baseball rosters.

Former Notre Dame pitcher Kohlhepp impressing during Detroit Tigers camp

The former Irish pitcher has impressed early in his MLB career

It’s always a great selling point during the recruiting process to sell players that their future is at the next level. Regardless of what sport it is, every athlete that gets an opportunity to play at the collegiate level has those dreams. For some, it’s not realistic but for others, like former Notre Dame pitcher Tanner Kohlhepp, it is.

We fondly remember Kohlhepp’s part in last years run in to the Super Regionals, then having the Detroit Tigers select him in the fifth round. Not all drafted players are fast tracked through systems, especially when drafted into an organization that is rebuilding. The Tigers were one of the worst teams in the MLB last year, but have the envy of many other teams due to a wealth of minor league talent, Kohlhepp included.

In his first outing facing live hitters since donning the Blue and Gold, Kohlhepp was more than impressive according to MLB.coms Jason Beck.

It’s great to see players like Trey Mancini and Cavan Biggio having big roles for their teams and it looks like Kohlhepp could be doing the same with the Tigers. It looks like Link Jarrett can use Kohlhepp as recruiting ammo in the near future.

Watch: Biggio’s second blast of 2021

Home run number two for Cavan Biggio came Thursday night

The Toronto Blue Jays opened the home portion of their 2021 season on Thursday.

In Dunedin, Florida.

Due to the pandemic, the Blue Jays will spend at least the first month of the year playing home games at their spring training facility.

In the very non-traditional home-opener Thursday night against the Angels a couple of big boppers went yard as Vladimir Guererro, Jr. hit a home run and Mike Trout literally put a ball on an elementary school.

Notre Dame product Cavan Biggio got in on the action, as well as the Blue Jays third baseman, hit his second home run of the year to tie things at four in the sixth inning.

The Blue Jays eventually fell to the Angels in 11 innings, 7-5.

Notre Dame Baseball Alumni Gather on SiriusXM Podcast Episode

This pandemic has resulted in reunions and interviews of all sorts.

This pandemic has resulted in reunions and interviews of all sorts. One of the least likely has come in the form of a podcast episode featuring Notre Dame baseball alumni who were part of the program at different times. One edition of the SiriusXM podcast “Sports From the Sidelines” aired on MLB Network Radio on Wednesday. The episode, appropriately entitled “Three-Run Domer” featured Craig Counsell, Brad Lidge, Cavan Biggio and Pat Connaughton, all of whom represent the program at different times.

There was no shortage of topics during the 47-minute conversation. Counsell, who mentioned how rare it was for the football team to lose during his time at Notre Dame, said it is imperative for MLB to start playing so that college football has a chance to do the same. The Milwaukee Brewers manager can’t see college football kicking off if his own sport isn’t in action.

On a lighter note, Connaughton hasn’t forgotten about baseball. In fact, even as his Milwaukee Bucks wait to see if they’ll have a chance to compete for a 2020 NBA championship, he hasn’t shaken the thought that he might give professional baseball a shot like Michael Jordan and Tim Tebow before him. He didn’t necessarily say he would leave basketball behind like MJ and Tebow left their respective sports, but it’s practically a given he would do that if he was serious about baseball.

If you’re a SiriusXM subscriber, you can go to the service’s website and listen to this episode on demand. You’re not doing much else being stuck at home. Hear what these Domers have to say about their time representing the gold and blue.
