Chiefs WR DeAndre Hopkins describes his chemistry with Patrick Mahomes: ‘I’m always learning’

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins is still adjusting to his new team but showed little uncertainty during his star performance in Week 9 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The veteran spoke to reporters after the game about working well with Patrick Mahomes during his press conference.

“A lot more comfortable. Coaches do a great job of getting me prepared,” said Hopkins. “It’s not just Connor (Embree), but everybody on the offensive side. Everybody’s always testing me and asking me questions. You know, just seeing my knowledge of the offense as we go.”

Mahomes and Hopkins connected early and often on Monday, with the five-time All-Pro finishing with eight receptions for 86 yards and two touchdowns.

“Communication, talking through our practice, talking locker room, just communicating every day, just about looks that we see,” said Hopkins. “And me just picking his (Mahomes) brain, asking him what he likes, and when I’m not out there, taking the rep, I’m always learning and just seeing How he does things.”

The growing chemistry between Mahomes and Hopkins should grow with more practice time, as the duo will be back in action on Sunday against the Denver Broncos.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid shares assessment of Travis Kelce’s start to the season: ‘Travis is fine’

Kansas City #Chiefs HC Andy Reid shares assessment of Travis Kelce’s start to the season: ‘Travis is fine’ | @EdEastonJr

The defending Super Bowl champions’ undefeated start doesn’t exclude them from critics seeking potential issues with the team.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke to reporters on Wednesday about the ongoing criticism of star tight end Travis Kelce over his lack of production through three games.

“I know people are saying that he’s old, or whatever, has distractions and all this. The defenses don’t think that,” said Reid. “We have another receiver that plays opposite him that has a lot of yards and catches, and that’s how this thing goes. Travis is fine.”

Kelce has eight catches for 69 yards and no touchdowns through three weeks. He’s had limited targets due to defensive strategy but has opened up opportunities for his teammates.

“He does know that, and he collects people, and then you have the check downs that we had last week, these big gains Noah (Gray) standing in the middle of the field by himself for one-on-one situations,” said Reid. “Trav (Travis Kelce) knows it. I mean, he literally said (as) he came off the field, so just keep dialing him up and let him do that.”

Kelce will look to bounce back this Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi stadium, where he’s had good games in past seasons.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes isn’t worried about Travis Kelce’s slow start: ‘Travis will eat’

Kansas City #Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes isn’t worried about Travis Kelce’s slow start: ‘Travis will eat’ | @EdEastonJr

The unusually slow start from Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce had critics questioning his performance on or off the field. The only stat that truly matters to him is wins, and the Chiefs are undefeated at 3-0 to start the season.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes addressed the ongoing debate regarding his Pro Bowl teammate not having the usual productive games he’s had in last seasons through three weeks.

“I feel like I want to get him the ball more,” Mahomes said. “Whereas he’s just like, ‘I just want to win, man. I don’t care. I’ll run these routes and take guys with me so that other guys can get open.'”

Mahomes has been more critical of his play so far this season. He believes Kelce’s offensive lack of production concerns the defensive matchups.

“We understand he’s an important part of this offense, and we want to make sure that we’re still featuring him. But at the same time, if defenses are going to take away him, we’ll give the ball to other guys and let them make plays,” said Mahomes. “But as the season goes on, if we continue to show that we’re going to throw it to Rashee (Rice) and we’re going to throw it to these other guys, and they are gonna make plays, teams are gonna have to do those one on one matchups, and that’s when Travis will eat.”

The Los Angeles Chargers welcome the Chiefs to town in Week 4 and are expected to be without safety Derwin James in the secondary due to suspension. This could play a factor in the utilization of Kelce more in the passing game.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes discusses teams denying Travis Kelce: ‘He’s going to get his catches’

The regular season is only two weeks old, and the Kansas City Chiefs are undefeated while getting contributions from various players on offense.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes spoke to reporters following Sunday’s victory, addressing the lack of production from Travis Kelce due to defensive schemes in the first two games.

“They’re doing a great job of just kind of having two people for him pretty much the entire game,” said Mahomes. “That’s why you’ve seen guys like Rashee (Rice) and (Xavier) Worthy – I mean, if you look at the first touchdown, I’m actually looking at Trav (Travis Kelce), and the backside safety goes all the way across the field to help guard Travis, and then you throw the ball down the sideline to Rashee, and that’s kind of what

they’ve been doing.”

Kelce was held to one catch for five yards on Sunday and faced constant double teams and attention from several defenders. In the first half, Mahomes was intercepted, trying to target Kelce, who continues to be heavily game-planned against by defensive coordinators after two games.

“Obviously, we’ve played two opponents that we’ve played a lot, so they have a plan on how they’re going to account for Travis,” said Mahomes. “As the season goes on, he’s going to get his catches, he’s going to get his yards. The leader that he is – what’s special is he’s hyping everybody up, he’s keeping everybody motivated, and that’s what you need out of your great players.”

Kelce has four receptions for 39 yards through two weeks, significantly below his usual production over the years. As the season progresses, head coach Andy Reid will likely draw up unique ways to give the Pro Bowler more opportunities.

PFF: Chiefs DB L’Jarius Sneed has allowed just 10 catches, 87 yards since Week 15

According to Pro Football Focus, #Chiefs DB L’Jarius Sneed has been supremely stingy in coverage since Week 15

The Kansas City Chiefs have relied on exceptional play from their defensive backs to keep opposing offenses in check this season, and L’Jarius Sneed has been a key part of the team’s game plans against star wide receivers.

His dominance this season is well documented, but the experts at Pro Football Focus shined a spotlight on Sneed’s recent tear of superb performances ahead of Kansas City’s matchup against the Buffalo Bills this weekend.

According to PFF, Sneed has allowed just 10 receptions and 87 yards since Week 15 and still hasn’t allowed a touchdown this season.

While the veteran defensive back wasn’t part of the Associated Press All-Pro roster or a Pro Bowl selection, Sneed’s tenacity has helped keep the Chiefs afloat in a season where Kansas City needed its defensive stars to step up as its offense plateaued.

Expect Sneed’s matchups against Bill receiver Stefon Diggs to steal the spotlight in the divisional round of the AFC playoffs this weekend.

Look: Bryan Edwards’ best catches from Derek Carr with the Raiders

Look: Bryan Edwards’ best catches from Derek Carr with the Raiders, now together with the Saints

The New Orleans Saints excited some fans early this week with the pickup  of wide receiver Bryan Edwards, who made some of his best catches on passes from Derek Carr when they were both playing for the Las Vegas Raiders. The Saints could use more help at receiver given the thin depth on their roster, so signing Edwards makes a lot of sense.

Now they’re together again in black and gold, and hoping to reestablish the connection that saw Edwards eclipse 500 receiving yards just two years ago. Here’s a quick look at some of their best completions in silver and black, giving us an idea of what they might be able to accomplish in New Orleans:

Here is how many drops current Saints receivers had last season

Which Saints wide receivers dropped the most passes last year? Some of their newest additions, like Jarvis Landry and Dai’Jean Dixon, boast the best hands:

Jameis Winston is back under center for the New Orleans Saints, but a lot has changed around him. Pete Carmichael will be calling plays to his headset, for one. For another, the New Orleans Saints have added a number of new wide receivers to the mix through free agency, the 2022 NFL draft, and the scrum for undrafted rookie signings after the event. But which of them have the best hands? To find out, here are the targets, receptions, and drops for each Saints wideout from the 2021 season.

It’s important to note that drops are a really badly overrated stat, in the sense that they impact such a small fraction of plays. When a receiver is being thrown at 100-plus times in a single season, they tend to catch the ball much more frequently than they drop it. And a player’s drop rate can change dramatically from one year to the next – a great example is Chris Olave, who was only dinged with one drop in the 2020 season before he dropped five passes in 2021. A great receiver can be undercut by a subpar quarterback, too.

So don’t read too deeply into it. At the same time, the player only gets into that position by reliably catching the ball when it’s thrown their way so often in practice. Too many drops in low-stakes situations reduces their opportunities when the bright lights are on, and it can spell their end with the team altogether.

Let’s get to it. Here’s how it broke down for each of the wide receivers on the 90-man roster ahead of training camp, except for Michael Thomas and Kawaan Baker, who were not targeted in 2021. Thomas missed the year with an injury, while Baker was on the practice squad. The list is ordered by their respective drop rates:

Seahawks get 4 spots on NFL’s list of top 100 catches of 2020

The Seattle Seahawks notched four spots on the NFL’s list of the 100 greatest catches of the 2020 season, three by Lockett and one by Moore.

The NFL recently released their list of the 100 greatest catches of the 2020 season, and the Seattle Seahawks had four plays that notched spots on it.

Wide receiver Tyler Lockett had three of the four, while fellow WR David Moore got the other.

Lockett’s touchdown reception against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 11 clocked in at No. 90, and two of his 15 receptions in Week 7 against the same team got in the upper half; his one-handed catch over Patrick Peterson came in at No. 49, and his toe-dragging touchdown to make the score 34-24 got No. 43.

However, the biggest of all was Moore’s 38-yard touchdown catch in Week 2 against the New England Patriots to give the Seahawks a 21-17 lead, a reception that had a particularly notable stat attached to it.
