Michigan commit flips to Boston College

The three-star linebacker decommits from Michigan football and stays closer to home.

There was a lot to like about one of Michigan football’s 2021 commits that was flying under-the-radar.

A hard-hitting linebacker, Mansfield (MA) Noble and Greenough School three-star inside linebacker Casey Phinney was a hard-hitter, and it didn’t hurt that his teammate and best friend, offensive guard Drew Kendall, is a four-star that Michigan was highly coveting.

However, Kendall has been trending to Boston College, and it appears that the in-state school also wanted his Michigan commit teammate. Phinney announced on Twitter on Saturday afternoon that he has flipped from the Wolverines to the Eagles, joining former Ohio State offensive coordinator Jeff Hafley’s team.

With Phinney out, Michigan is, again, back down to 20 commitments in the 2021 class. Phinney is the No. 1139 prospect in the country this recruiting cycle, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Michigan adds 2021 3-star linebacker from New England

The three-star inside linebacker from Massachusetts pledges to be a Wolverine.

Make it three in two days.

The Wolverines had been sitting with just two commitments for the longest time in the 2021 class, with Giovanni El-Hadi and J.J. McCarthy being long-time pledges to the class. Since then, Michigan’s 2021 class has grown to seven strong, with five recent commitments, and the latest one coming on Friday morning.

After the additions of four-star tight end Louis Hansen and five-star kicker (via Kohl’s kicker rankings) Tommy Doman Jr. on Thursday, 2021 Marshfield (MA) Noble and Greenough School three-star linebacker Casey Phinney decided he didn’t want to wait any longer, and pledged to wear the maize and blue at the next level via Twitter on Friday.

Phinney is rated by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 998 player in the country, the No. 40 inside linebacker and No. 9 player in the state of Massachusetts.

With Phinney in the fold, Michigan now has seven commits in 2021 with one five-star, three four-stars, two three-stars and a five-star kicker (via separate kicker rankings).
