Manchester United have themselves a trophy

For the first time since 2017, the Red Devils have won a piece of silverware

For a club like Manchester United, six years is a long time to wait for a trophy.

But after a period of floundering, United finally appears to have put two essential pieces in place: a coach and a midfield anchor. That, along with one of the most in-form players in Europe, has made all the difference.

With Erik ten Hag, Casemiro and Marcus Rashford leading the charge, United easily ended their title drought on Sunday by defeating Newcastle 2-0 in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

Casemiro opened the scoring in the 33rd minute with a header off Luke Shaw’s free kick delivery. Six minutes later, Rashford was on hand to score what appeared to be his 25th goal of a prolific campaign, only for the scoring to eventually be changed to a Sven Botman own goal.

Newcastle would hardly threaten the rest of the way at Wembley, as David de Gea needed to make just two saves all afternoon to notch his 181st clean sheet with Manchester United — breaking Peter Schmeichel’s all-time club record.

In Ten Hag, United appears to finally have their first post-Sir Alex manager worthy of leading the club for the long term. The Dutchman has instilled a clear style of play, a system of discipline and has helped rid the club of some of its bigger distractions.

Sunday marked the end of United’s trophy drought but it may not be the last piece of hardware the club lifts in 2022-23. They’re third in the Premier League table and still alive in the FA Cup and Europa League.

For the first time in a while, there is a real sense of optimism at Old Trafford. Now, about that ownership situation…

Who needs Neymar when you have … Casemiro??

How many teams have a defensive midfielder that can score a winner like this?

Even for a team as good as Brazil, Neymar’s injury looms large over the rest of the team’s World Cup campaign.

The superstar suffered an ankle injury in Brazil’s opener against Serbia, forcing him out of Monday’s game against Switzerland amid reports he’s likely out for the rest of the group stage at least.

Brazil may feel Neymar’s absence as the tournament goes on if he’s unable to recover but on Monday, they gave us a reminder that they are still Brazil.

After all, how many teams at this tournament can turn to their defensive midfielder to score a winner as pure as Casemiro’s against the Swiss?

The European side frustrated Brazil through 83 minutes of the match at Stadium 974, with the favored Selecao seeing a second-half goal from Vinícius Jr. waved off due to an offside call.

But as the game entered its final minutes, Casemiro got on the end of a clever flicked pass from Rodrygo and surprised everyone with a quick half-volley that flew into the far corner.

That would be all Brazil needed on the night in a 1-0 victory that took them into the last 16 for an incredible 14th straight tournament. As long as the Selecao keep producing defensive-minded players who can strike a ball this pure, that streak will likely continue.

Casemiro had the best response when asked about missing this year’s Champions League

If anyone can afford to take a year off from the Champions League, it’s probably Casemiro

Casemiro’s move from Real Madrid to Manchester United has raised a few eyebrows across Europe, in part because he was leaving one of the most successful teams in recent history to join, well, Manchester United.

Case in point: While Casemiro would have been defending his Champions League title this season with Madrid, he will instead be playing in the Europa League with Manchester United.

ESPN Brazil put the obvious question to Casemiro, asking him why he would voluntarily give up a spot in the Champions League this season. The Brazilian was ready with an answer.

“Well, I have five already, right?” he said with a laugh.

Fair point! The defensive midfielder did win Europe’s biggest club prize in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2022 with Madrid. Of course, he also outlined his desire to return to the competition with his new club.

“Just because I have five doesn’t mean I don’t want Manchester to win,” he added. “The Champions League is the most important championship, everyone wants to win. United has shown me a lot of affection. From the first day, they made me feel comfortable. The coach was very attentive, charismatic from day one. They always showed interest. This is very important.

“I want to win the Champions League, of course. If we don’t play in it, I’ll be sad. I want to be there, for the greatness of the club. But that happens with work and dedication.”

If anyone can afford to take a year off from the Champions League, it is probably Casemiro. And maybe the Europa League will provide him with a little extra motivation. After all, it’s at least one trophy he has not yet won.

Casemiro is joining Manchester United because Real Madrid has a plan

United was scrambling while Real Madrid was prepared to lose the Brazilian

Casemiro’s move to Manchester United is nearing completion after Carlo Ancelotti confirmed on Friday that the midfielder wants to leave Real Madrid.

“I talked to [Casemiro] this morning,” the Madrid head coach said. “He wants to try a new challenge, a new opportunity. I and the club understand it.

“With what he’s done at this club and the person he is, we have to respect it. There are talks right now, nothing is official, but he wants to leave.

“We wish him all the best in his next challenge.”

Losing one of, if not the best defensive midfielder in the world, would be a terrible blow for most clubs. At the very least, it would send many of them scrambling into the transfer market to find a replacement.

Not Madrid.

“Within the squad we have a replacement,” Ancelotti said. “[Aurélien] Tchouaméni has been signed for this position and at the moment he is one of the best midfielders on the market.

“There is also the option of [Toni] Kroos, who can play in this position, as he did the second year I was here. There is also [Eduardo] Camavinga.”

The midfield triumvirate of Casemiro, Kroos and Luka Modric has been exceptional for Madrid but with all three over 30, the club planned for the future by bringing in two of the top young midfielders in the world in Camavinga and Tchouaméni.

Manchester United didn’t have plan

In contrast, Manchester United has been scrambling to sign anyone and everyone possible as the transfer window enters its last two weeks.

After a disastrous start to the season, the Red Devils should, in theory, massively improve their central midfield with the addition of Casemiro.

But it will be costly.

The Brazilian will certainly help United, but his arrival is also a symptom of the club’s myopia.

Casemiro won’t hold any resale value. This is a win-now move for a team that still doesn’t appear to be in a great position to win a whole lot now.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, has been doing a lot of winning lately and even without Casemiro, that looks set to continue.
