Chris Olave carted off after scary hit vs. Panthers

Saints wide receiver Chris Olave was carted off on an immobilizing stretcher after a scary hit from Panthers safety Xavier Woods:

This is the worst thing to see in an NFL game. New Orleans Saints wide receiver Chris Olave was carted off on an immobilizing stretcher after a scary hit from Carolina Panthers safety Xavier Woods. Derek Carr’s pass sailed too high for Olave to catch it and the wideout was sandwiched between Woods and the Panthers defender covering him. He remained motionless on the turf after the collision.

Players from both teams crowded around as the medical staff attended to Olave, as did Saints coach Dennis Allen. It’s an awful situation. Olave raised his arms after he was placed on the cart, which is a great sign, but he’s already suffered three concussions in his brief NFL career. He practiced this  week with a unique Guardian cap over his helmet and considered wearing it into the game, but ultimately chose not to. Few players do.

Hopefully this wasn’t as serious as it looked, but Olave shouldn’t be expected to return to this game against the Panthers. Stay tuned for updates.

Pete Carroll doesn’t expect Seahawks G Damien Lewis to be out for long

After further evaluation, Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll doesn’t expect guard Damien Lewis to be out for long with his ankle sprain.

The Seattle Seahawks got quite a scare Thursday night at Lumen Field when guard Damien Lewis was fitted with an air cast and carted off the field. At first glance, Lewis appeared to suffer a serious leg injury but later testing revealed a lateral ankle sprain.

Coach Pete Carroll is confident Lewis will be able to return to the action sooner than later.

“Only that it is kind of a basketball ankle sprain, so that is a really positive thing,” Carroll explained after Sunday’s practice. “It’s the swelling that he has to deal with. There are no torn ligaments or any of that stuff, so it doesn’t mean that he is immediately popping back, but it’s not going to be a long time.

“It’s like not a high ankle sprain that lingers forever.”

Lewis likely won’t be back by the Seahawks’ final preseason game on Friday but with the opener not until Sept. 12 against the Broncos, all fingers are crossed he’ll be ready to roll by then.

Seahawks G Damien Lewis escapes major injury with lateral ankle sprain

After being carted off the field in an air cast, Seattle Seahawks guard Damien Lewis was determined to have only a lateral ankle sprain.

The Seattle Seahawks struggled mightily in their 27-11 loss to the Chicago Bears on Thursday night. And to add insult to injury, all of Lumen Field watched as guard Damien Lewis was fitted with an air cast and carted off the field.

All indications at the time were that Lewis had suffered a major leg injury.

It wasn’t until his postgame press conference that coach Pete Carroll was able to provide an updated status for Lewis, who by then, had undergone an initial round of tests.

“D-Lew, we’re very fortunate,” Carroll told reporters after the matchup. “He had a lateral ankle sprain out of the deal. Got rolled up on and all that. All the X-rays and stuff were negative. Very fortunate there. He was upbeat about that a little bit.

“Maybe surprised by the results but we’re thrilled by it as well.”

No particular timeline was given for Lewis’ return.
