Giants gave Carson Tinker largest reserve/futures signing bonus

Of the 18 players they signed, the New York Giants have given long snapper Carson Tinker the largest reserve/futures signing bonus.

The New York Giants have signed 18 players to reserve/futures deals since their season ended in early January, and they’ve given those players a wide variety of signing bonuses.

At the very bottom of that pile is quarterback/wide receiver Joe Webb, who received just $500 at the time of signing. At the other end of that spectrum is long snapper Carson Tinker, who landed an $8,500 signing bonus.

With Casey Kreiter an impending unrestricted free agent, it would make sense for the Giants to ensure Tinker remains around until at least training camp. If Kreiter is re-signed and reassumes his starting role, Tinker could be released or find himself back on the practice squad, where he spent the 2020 regular season.

Ultimately, giving Tinker the largest reserve/futures signing bonus is more about ensuring his availability next season in case the Giants need it.

Reserve/futures contracts guarantee that a player can not jump ship and sign with another team. Although not technically under contract until the new league year begins, their rights belong to the signing team and their salary will impact the following season’s cap.

Giants practice squad protections: Niko Lalos, two others

The New York Giants have protected three practice squad players including new fan favorite, DE Niko Lalos.

The New York Giants have announced the protections of three practice squad players ahead of their Week 13 game against the Seattle Seahawks, including new fan favorite, defensive lineman Niko Lalos.

Lalos originally signed with the Giants back in April as an undrafted rookie out of Dartmouth. He was released as a part of final cuts in September and signed to the team’s practice squad a day later.

Through 11 weeks of the season, Lalos quietly remained on the practice squad before being elevated to the active roster last week. He took his first eight NFL snaps against the Cincinnati Bengals and hauled in an incredibly impressive and game-changing interception.

Prior to the game, Lalos received a shout-out from LeBron James and later drew wide praise from his coaches and teammates.

In addition to Lalos, the Giants also protected quarterback Clayton Thorson and long snapper Carson Tinker.

The Giants signed Thorson on September 29 and have protected him three other times this season so far. And with Daniel Jones hampered by a hamstring injury and only one other quarterback on the roster to date, his protection makes sense.

Tinker was also signed in early September and waived as a part of final cuts before being added to the practice squad.

Update: After re-signing to the practice squad, the Giants also protected kicker/punter Ryan Santoso.

The New York Giants filed the protections of four practice squad players with the NFL on Tuesday, including safety Sean Chandler.

In addition to Chandler, the Giants also protected long snapper Carson Tinker, kicker/punter Ryan Santoso and rookie defensive back Chris Williamson.

Chandler originally signed with the Giants as an undrafted rookie out of Temple in 2018 and has appeared in 31 games for the team.

Tinker was signed in early September and waived as a part of final cuts before being added to the practice squad, while Santoso was signed to the practice squad on September 6.

Williamson was a seventh-round pick of the Giants in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Giants sign LS Carson Tinker, waive TE Rysen John

The New York Giants have signed long snapper Carson Tinker and designated tight end Rysen John as waived/injured.

The New York Giants continue to tweak their roster before Saturday’s 4:00 p.m. ET cut-down deadline by signing veteran long snapper Carson Tinker. In a corresponding move, the club designated rookie tight end Rysen John waived/injured.

Tinker, a three-time BCS National Champion at Alabama, played in 69 games for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2013-2018 after going undrafted in 2013. Current Giants head coach Joe Judge was an assistant for the Crimson Tide at the same time Tinker served as the long snapper there.

The Giants currently have just one long snapper in camp. Casey Krieter, and could be seeking a change at the position but this could be simply a courtesy signing to see what Tinker can do. He apparently did enough in his tryout on Wednesday to warrant the Giants to sign him.

Tinker did not play in the NFL in 2019 after being released by the Jaguars that March. He had a tryout with Houston two weeks ago but was not offered a contract.

Rysen John was a long-shot to make the Giants’ roster and was going to be cut on Saturday when the team pares the roster down to 53 players.

The 6-foot-7 prospect out of Simon Fraser University in British Columbia is a promising tight end but was buried on the Giants’ depth chart. He is a candidate for the expanded practice squad, although general manager Dave Gettleman said on Wednesday that the practice squad will be filled with more pro-ready players because of the prospect of a possible COVID-19 outbreak.
