The New York Giants filed the protections of four practice squad players with the NFL on Tuesday, including safety Sean Chandler.

In addition to Chandler, the Giants also protected long snapper Carson Tinker, kicker/punter Ryan Santoso and rookie defensive back Chris Williamson.

Chandler originally signed with the Giants as an undrafted rookie out of Temple in 2018 and has appeared in 31 games for the team.

Tinker was signed in early September and waived as a part of final cuts before being added to the practice squad, while Santoso was signed to the practice squad on September 6.

Williamson was a seventh-round pick of the Giants in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The New York Giants continue to tweak their roster before Saturday’s 4:00 p.m. ET cut-down deadline by signing veteran long snapper Carson Tinker. In a corresponding move, the club designated rookie tight end Rysen John waived/injured.

Tinker, a three-time BCS National Champion at Alabama, played in 69 games for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2013-2018 after going undrafted in 2013. Current Giants head coach Joe Judge was an assistant for the Crimson Tide at the same time Tinker served as the long snapper there.

The Giants currently have just one long snapper in camp. Casey Krieter, and could be seeking a change at the position but this could be simply a courtesy signing to see what Tinker can do. He apparently did enough in his tryout on Wednesday to warrant the Giants to sign him.

Tinker did not play in the NFL in 2019 after being released by the Jaguars that March. He had a tryout with Houston two weeks ago but was not offered a contract.

Rysen John was a long-shot to make the Giants’ roster and was going to be cut on Saturday when the team pares the roster down to 53 players.

The 6-foot-7 prospect out of Simon Fraser University in British Columbia is a promising tight end but was buried on the Giants’ depth chart. He is a candidate for the expanded practice squad, although general manager Dave Gettleman said on Wednesday that the practice squad will be filled with more pro-ready players because of the prospect of a possible COVID-19 outbreak.
