Panthers at Chiefs: Game notes

  • The Panthers are coming off a 25-17 loss at home against the struggling Atlanta Falcons in a Thursday game in Week 8. They’re on a three-game slide after a three-game win streak. The Panthers enter on a 3-0 ATS run on the road, however.
  • The Chiefs powered past the New York Jets by a 35-9 score in Week 8, covering a 20-point number. They have won and covered three in a row since a 40-32 home loss against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 5.
  • Kansas City ranks fourth in the NFL in total yards (410.5), fourth in passing yards (286.4) and tied for second in points scored (31.6) per game. Defensively, the Chiefs are 10th in total yards (344.0), third in passing yards (201.3) and third in points scored (19.0) per game.
  • Chiefs RB Le’Veon Bell struggled against his former team last week, posting just seven rushing yards on six attempts, and he has just 46 rushing yards on 12 attempts in his two games with the reigning champs.
  • The Panthers are 4-0 ATS in their past four as underdogs, while the Chiefs are 9-1-1 ATS in their previous 11 at home and 4-0-1 ATS in their previous five against teams with a losing overall record.

Panthers at Chiefs: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Chiefs 37, Panthers 20

Money line (?)

The Chiefs (-556) should easily push past the Panthers (+420), even as the Cats get McCaffrey back for the first time since Week 2 due to a high-ankle sprain.

Risking more than five and a half times your potential return is just not good gambling, though. AVOID, and look to the spread.

Against the spread (?)

The CHIEFS -10.5 (-110) will have their hands full against a Panthers team which will be energized with the return of its biggest star. Still, Kansas City is at home and will be able to do enough to win this one by at least two touchdowns.

The Panthers are just middle of the road in total yards allowed at 357.4 per game, and they’ll struggle with QB Patrick Mahomes and this high-octane offense.

Over/Under (?)

OVER 52.5 (-110) is a strong play, as the Chiefs rank second in the NFL with 31.6 points per game, and they’ll be able to make life miserable for the Panthers D, which was dismal last Thursday against the Falcons.

The Chiefs have allowed 142.8 rushing yards per game, the Achilles’ heel of this D, and McCaffrey and company will be able to add to those uneven numbers. They won’t win, or even come close, but Carolina will be able to put points on the board before Kansas City pulls away in the second half.

Carolina Panthers field-goal favorites over Atlanta Falcons in Week 8

The Carolina Panthers are the betting favorites in their Week 8 home matchup with the Atlanta Falcons.

The Atlanta Falcons (1-6) square off with the Carolina Panthers (3-4) Thursday at 8:20 p.m. ET at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. Below, we take a look at the early Week 8 betting odds and lines at BetMGM Sportsbook.

The Falcons snatched defeat from the jaws of victory yet again in Week 7, blowing a fourth-quarter lead in the worst way possible. They were trailing the Detroit Lions 16-14 with 1:12 left in the game, but they were in field-goal range at Detroit’s 13-yard line. The Lions had no timeouts left and their plan was to allow the Falcons to score so they could get the ball back. It was Detroit’s only chance. Atlanta RB Todd Gurley got down to the 1, tried to hold up from getting into the end zone, but his momentum carried him over the line, breaking the plane for a touchdown. The Falcons added a two-point conversion, and now led 22-16. Gifted another opportunity by getting the ball back instead of the Falcons running more time of the clock, the Lions cashed in. Detroit drove down the field, 75 yards in eight plays, and scored an 11-yard TD pass as time expired. The ensuing PAT won it 23-22. The Falcons continue to discover new ways to lose.

The Panthers gave the New Orleans Saints a run, but QB Teddy Bridgewater came up just short against his former team 27-24. Panthers K Joey Slye attempted a 65-yard, would-be NFL-record field goal at the buzzer to send the game to overtime, but it just missed by about the length of a football. The Panthers did cover as 7-point dogs, moving to 4-1 ATS across the past five. That includes a 23-16 win in Atlanta back in Week 5 as 2.5-point underdogs.

Falcons at Panthers betting odds, spread and line

Odds via BetMGM; last updated Monday at 6:02 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Falcons +135 (bet $100 to win $135) / Panthers -162 (bet $162 to win $100) | Bet now
  • Against the spread: Falcons +3, -110 (bet $110 to win $100) / Panthers -3, -110 (bet $110 to win $100) | Bet now
  • Total: 50.5, Over -115 (bet $115 to win $100) / Under -106 (bet $106 to win $100) | Bet now

New to NFL betting?

At +135 odds, the Falcons have an implied 42.55% chance of winning, or 27/20 fractional odds. If Atlanta wins outright or loses by 2 points, a Falcons +3 (-110) ATS ticket cashes. A 3-point Panthers win is a push, meaning you get your money back.

Place your legal, online NFL bets in CO, IN, NJ and WV at BetMGM. Risk-free first bet! Terms and conditions apply. Bet now!

At -162 odds, the Panthers have an implied 61.83% chance of winning, or 50/81 fractional odds. Carolina needs to win by at least 4 points for a Panthers -3 (-110) ticket to cash.

Panthers at Saints game notes

  • The Chicago Bears cooled off the Panthers last week at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, winning 23-16 to snap Carolina’s three-game win and cover streak. The Panthers’ 16 points marked a season low for offensive production, too.
  • The Panthers hit the Under for the fourth consecutive week in the loss to the bears, and they’re allowing just 19.0 PPG across the past four after yielding 32.5 PPG in the first two outings.
  • New Orleans is coming off its bye. Before the rest, they had won a pair of games, including a 30-27 overtime win over the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 5.
  • The Saints have been the opposite of the Panthers, hitting the Over in each of their five outings this season. New Orleans has scored at least 24 points in every game, and at least 30 points in four contests.
  • Defense isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when discussing the Saints, but they rank a solid eighth in total yards allowed (337.4) and sixth in rushing yards allowed (100.2) per game.

Panthers at Saints key injuries

Panthers

  • CB Eli Apple (hamstring) questionable
  • CB Donte Jackson (toe) questionable
  • WR Curtis Samuel (knee) questionable
  • John Miller (ankle) questionable

Saints

  • C/OG Nick Easton (concussion) out
  • WR Michael Thomas (ankle, hamstring) out
  • WR Emmanuel Sanders (COVID-19) out
  • DB JT Gray (hamstring) questionable

Panthers at Saints: Odds, prediction, betting lines and picks

Prediction

Saints 31, Panthers 27

Money line (?)

The Saints (-345) are expected to win this game, but it will be a lot closer than most people are thinking. Risking more than three times your potential return in a divisional game is not wise gambling. AVOID.

Against the spread (?)

The PANTHERS +7 (-110) are a strong play in this divisional road game. The road team has cashed in 27 of the previous 38 in this series, and Carolina plays particularly well in the Crescent City. The Panthers are 15-5 ATS in their past 20 trips to the Big Easy, with the underdog hitting in 10 of the past 12 in the series.

Over/Under (?)

The OVER 49.5 (-115) is a sound wager despite Carolina trending to the Under lately. In fact, the Over has cashed in each of the past seven meetings in New Orleans, and six of the previous seven in this series overall. New Orleans is the only team in the NFL to hit the Over in each of its games without any Under results or pushes, and that streak will continue at least one more week.
