Report: Portland Trail Blazers to ink unsigned free agent Carmelo Anthony

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, former Thunder forward Carmelo Anthony will sign a non-guaranteed deal with the Portland Trail Blazers

The Portland Trailblazers have decided to roll the dice on former Oklahoma City Thunder forward Carmelo Anthony, according to ESPN senior writer Adrian Wojnarowski.

Anthony spent 2017-18 in Oklahoma City. The Thunder brought Anthony in from the Knicks, but the veteran, who has been accustomed to being the headliner throughout his NBA career, never fully meshed with Russell Westbrook and Paul George. During his stint in OKC, Anthony averaged a career-low 16.2 points.

He last played in the league in the 2018-19 NBA season for the Houston Rockets and has struggled to find a home for the final chapter of his now- 17-year career over the summer.

At the same time, cascading injuries and lofty postseason aspirations combined to push a struggling Portland Trail Blazers franchise to warm to the idea of bringing on Melo, who has been perceived in some circles as resistant to accepting a lesser role as he ages out of a starting one.

Now, standing at 4-8 midway through November, the team has decided that injuries to Jusuf Nurkic and particularly Zach Collins, have stretched the frontcourt rotation too thin, especially at the power forward position.

Anthony, per Wojnarowski, will be brought on to help out in that regard on a non-guaranteed deal and will join the team on their coming road trip. No word on other contract details, though presumably, it will be at the veteran’s minimum given the team’s cap situation.

LeBron James celebrates Carmelo Anthony signing with Trail Blazers

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James celebrated his friend Carmelo Anthony getting back into the NBA on Thursday.

One of the most disappointing teams in the early going of the NBA season made a big move on Thursday night, one that got on the radar of LeBron James as one of his closest friends in the league made his way back into the NBA.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Thursday night that the 4-8 Portland Trail Blazers agreed to bring in 10-time NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony, which brought about a response of enthusiasm from NBA fans and of course, the rest of the Banana Boat crew. Dwyane Wade shared his reaction that it was ‘about time’ and LeBron echoed his friend’s tweet.

For those who are wondering, the first game between LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony is scheduled for December 6th in Portland when the Los Angeles Lakers visit the Portland Trail Blazers. They will also play each other about three weeks after that in Portland on Dec. 28.

After it looked for nearly a year like LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony would never play on the same court again, that chance will come sooner than anybody expected.

NBA fans are pumped about Carmelo Anthony joining the Portland Trail Blazers

Carmelo Anthony is back.

Carmelo Anthony is back in the NBA – something that many fans thought might not happen again – as he’s signing a non-guaranteed deal with the Portland Trail Blazers, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Thursday night.

Melo, a future Hall of Famer, hasn’t played in an NBA game since early last season when he lasted just 10 games with the Houston Rockets before being released.

The Trail Blazers made it to the Western Conference Finals last year but have gotten off to a rough start this season as they’re just 4-8 through 12 games and are 13th in the Western Conference.

How much can Melo help this struggling team? We’re gonna have to see, but apparently Damian Lillard was cool with the addition:

Blazers to sign former Rockets forward Carmelo Anthony

The Rockets could face former teammate Carmelo Anthony when the Portland Trail Blazers visit Houston on Monday.

The Portland Trail Blazers are signing former Houston Rockets forward Carmelo Anthony to a non-guaranteed contract, ESPN‘s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Thursday.

The Blazers play in Houston on Monday. Depending when Anthony is activated, he could potentially play against his former Rockets team in that game. Wojnarowski reports that Anthony will join the Blazers on their upcoming road trip, which begins Saturday in San Antonio.

Anthony has not participated in an NBA game since Nov. 8, 2018, when the Rockets lost in Oklahoma City to fall to a disappointing 4-6. The Rockets chose to move on from Anthony after that game, largely due to his defensive difficulties in their switching scheme.

After a Western Conference Finals appearance, the underwhelming 4-6 start had Daryl Morey and the 2018-19 Rockets looking for changes. Remarkably, it’s a very similar predicament that may be prompting the Blazers to sign Anthony, since Portland is currently 4-8 following a Western Conference Finals berth last season.

In all, Anthony played just 10 games for the Rockets after signing with the team in August 2018, averaging 13.4 points on 40.5% shooting (32.8% on 3s) in 29.4 minutes per game.

Now 35 years old, this will be the 17th NBA season for Anthony, a 10-time All-Star and the league’s 2013 scoring champion. For his career, the future Hall of Famer has averaged 24.0 points (44.9% shooting) and 6.5 rebounds in 35.8 minutes per game.

The 6-foot-8 forward has also won three Olympic gold medals with the USA Basketball Men’s National Team, for which he’s the all-time leading scorer in Olympics games.
