2022 Free agency: Cowboys bolster front, bringing back DT Carlos ‘Thicc-6’ Watkins

The Cowboys are bringing back Carlos Watkins on another one-year deal, keeping the depth on the defensive line in Dan Quinn’s system. | From @CDBurnett7

Since Dan Quinn took over as defensive coordinator in Dallas, the philosophy on the defensive line has changed in more than the scheme. Quinn constantly rotates players on the defensive line to keep fresh legs on the field at all times.

One of those rotational players in 2021 was defensive tackle Carlos Watkins, who started in 14 games for the Cowboys and had a career-high 32 tackles on the year. The former Texans fourth-rounder is coming back to Dallas on a consecutive one-year deal.

Watkins also had his first career interception on a pick-six to bury the Saints on the road. The Clemson standout returned a Taysom Hill pass 29 yards for the first touchdown of his career.

Returning to the Cowboys for 2022, Watkins keeps the continuity of a defensive tackle room that includes Neville Gallimore, Trysten Hill and Osa Odighizuwa. While the others have a larger impact in pass rush, Watkins is an early-down player that Quinn will continue to use as a run stuffer.

Year by year sack leaders during Brent Venables tenure with the Clemson Tigers

Getting ready for the Brent Venables era, which players led the Clemson Tigers in sacks during his tenure as the defensive coordinator.

It’s a new era for the Oklahoma Sooners, and the biggest change comes on the defensive side of the ball. Brent Venables and a new defensive staff look to take the Oklahoma Sooners back into the top 10 of the national rankings.

One position group that will benefit greatly from the transition to Venables and his group of coaches is the defensive line. During Venables’ time as the defensive coordinator for the Clemson Tigers, their sack leader had double-digit sacks four times. Only once did a Clemson Tiger have fewer than eight sacks.

For comparison, in 2021, Nik Bonitto and Isaiah Thomas each had seven sacks. Back in 2015 for the Clemson Tigers, Kevin Dodd and Shaq Lawson had 12.5 sacks a piece.

Jalen Redmond, Reggie Grimes, Marcus Stripling, Ethan Downs and other defensive linemen will benefit greatly from the hiring of Venables and the additions of Todd Bates and Miguel Chavis.

Christmas came early for a former Clemson defensive lineman this week.

Late in the fourth quarter of the primetime “Thursday Night Football” NFL game, Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Carlos Watkins intercepted New Orleans Saints quarterback Taysom Hill and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown in the Cowboys’ 27-17 victory at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

“It was a weird play,” Watkins told reporters after the game. “They kind of got to the ball early, we kind of went set. Me and Chauncey (Cowboys defensive end Chauncey Golston) had a game going, and I just happened to come around and the ball came right to me. Early Christmas present.”

According to Next Gen Stats, Watkins reached a max speed of 17.26 miles per hour (the second-fastest speed of his career) en route to the end zone during his pick-six – or probably more appropriately called a “thick-six” for the 6-foot-3, 305-pound Watkins.

“It was definitely an early Christmas present. It’s every fat guy’s dream, man,” he said. “You get a pick and then make it to the end zone – it’s every guy’s dream.”

While it was Watkins’ first interception return for a touchdown in the NFL, it wasn’t his first career pick-six – in 2015, as a redshirt junior at Clemson, Watkins provided a highlight of Clemson’s 41-10 win over Appalachian State when he returned his first career interception for a touchdown.

“It’s been a minute,” said Watkins, a fifth-year pro who spent each of the last four seasons with the Houston Texans. “Back like junior year in college, redshirt junior year in college, against App State, I got one. It was like 15 yards. It felt good.”

The worst part of Thursday’s pick-six against the Saints?

Watkins joked it was the celebration afterward when he was swarmed by excited teammates, showing him love in a not-so-gentle way – something he will be better prepared for the next time he finds the end zone.

“That’s like the worst part, though, the celebration,” Watkins said. “Because you can’t breathe, everybody’s grabbing your head. Bash (Cowboys defensive end Tarell Basham) tackled me after the play. But now I see why Tre (Cowboys cornerback (Trevon Diggs), he runs away from everybody. So, I’m going to take that note, and next time I’m running away from everybody.”

Carlos Watkins with big guy, pick-six for Cowboys

All 305 pounds of Carols Watkins ran to the end zone for a Dallas Cowboys pick-six

Dan Quinn filled in as Dallas head coach Thursday as Mike McCarthy missed the 27-17 victory over the New Orleans Saints due to COVID-19 protocols.

The Cowboys’ defensive coordinator was beaming as his defense made four interceptions of Taysom Hill, capped by a pick-six of  29 yards by Carlos Watkins.

All 6-foot-3, 305 pounds of Watkins made a nice grab of the Hill pass and had no trouble finding the end zone.

Watkins’ fellow defensive players had a role in the pick party of Hill, who was playing with a splint on the middle finger of his throwing hand after hitting it against a Dallas lineman’s arm in the first half.

Damontae Kazee, who earlier played a hurdle for Hill on a run by the Saints’ QB.

Jayron Kearse with an incredible pick.

It was the first time in almost 11 years Dallas had four interceptions in a game.

McCarthy: Cooper, Neal could play for Cowboys; Armstong, Watkins, Nsekhe out for MNF

Dorance Armstong, Carlos Watkins, and Ty Nsekhe have been declared out for Monday’s game with Philly. Amari Cooper is limited Thursday. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy delivered updates on several players as the team gets into their prep for the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night. Three line players have already been ruled out of the Week 3 matchup, while the team’s top wide receiver and the linebacker who last week led the team in snaps both have a chance to be ready, with four full days to go before kickoff.

During his pre-practice press conference Thursday, McCarthy revealed that wide receiver Amari Cooper would be limited in the day’s work. Cooper left the field during the offense’s game-winning drive on Sunday. McCarthy classified the injury then as bruised ribs, a re-aggravation of a hit he took in Week 1 versus Tampa.

Defensive end Dorance Armstrong sustained a high ankle sprain in the Week 2 game against the Chargers, and defensive tackle Carlos Watkins suffered a knee injury. Neither will play Monday in the Cowboys’ home opener. McCarthy confirmed.

Of Watkins, McCarthy told reporters that he had just seen the former fourth-round pick in the weight room, and that “he feels good and he’s making progress.”

Armstrong may be out, but McCarthy was not ready to say whether that would mean another week subbing on the edge for rookie linebacker Micah Parsons.

“I’m not going to really get into that,” the coach said. “There’ll be more opportunities playing different combinations. I think, really, the true focus is: this [Eagles] offense is different than the first two teams we played. This offense is about speed and space. Their offensive line is- they just had the one injury last week- but this is the healthiest they’ve been in some time. A big athletic offensive line with five perimeter players that can really, really go. So we’re really focused on speed and space and what we need to do to combat that.”

Randy Gregory has been re-activated from the Reserve/COVID list and is back fully with the team; he is expected to start Monday night at defensive end.

Linebacker Keanu Neal was just placed on the COVID watchlist on Wednesday, but apparently has not tested positive. McCarthy explained, “There’s definitely a chance” he could be cleared to face the Eagles.

Safety Donovan Wilson remains a non-participant in practice as he nurses a groin injury.

And of offensive lineman Ty Nsekhe, who was taken to a Dallas hospital last week with what was termed heat exhaustion, McCarthy says he will not play in Week 3. “It’s an illness,” the coach shared. “There’s a plan to bring him back. Just got to be smart. This is a long year.”

It’s already been an epic adventure for the Cowboys, with players moving to and from the Reserve/COVID list and the La’el Collins suspension adding to the complications of regular football injuries. It’s made for a delicate dance with the club’s practice squad players to keep them ready for action.

“That’s the beauty of this new roster setup,” McCarthy explained. “It gives you the ability to move guys up; you have potentially a COVID exempt also. So all those things factor into it. You have a projected 48 [players] each week, but you never just work 48 players.”

McCarthy went on to say that the whole goal is to not let various injuries paint the coaching staff into a corner when it comes to assigning positions for gameday.

“I think it’s clearly why you play chess the whole week,” he concluded. “You play the different combinations. You want to have foresight on what move you want to make next, because, really, when you get into the game, you want to be playing checkers.”

Report: CeeDee Lamb among 4 Cowboys back to work from COVID list

CeeDee Lamb, Damontae Kazee, Carlos Watkins, and DC Dan Quinn are all back in action with one week to go before the 2021 season opener. | From @ToddBrock24f7

With one week to go before the season opener, the Cowboys are getting several key pieces of the puzzle back on the table. The team’s late-preseason additions to the Reserve/COVID list have substantially impacted only two preseason games and a handful of practices and meetings thus far, but there had been concern with every passing day over whether those names on the list would be back in action in time to play September 9th against the defending Super Bowl champs.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram‘s Clarence Hill Jr. is reporting that wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, safety Damontae Kazee, and defensive tackle Carlos Watkins will likely be activated from the COVID watchlist on Thursday and return to practice with the team.

Offensive lineman Connor Williams remains on the list, as does wide receiver Noah Brown.

Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn had also been under COVID-19 protocol after testing positive for the virus. He missed the club’s last two preseason games and was participating only virtually in team meetings. ESPN’s Ed Werder announced that Quinn was also back at work as of Wednesday evening.

Having players on the Reserve/COVID list technically meant that the Cowboys were able to do a little fudging on Tuesday’s deadline for roster cuts, as players under COVID protocol do not count toward the official 53-man roster. But for each player now activated off of that list, the team will be required to make a corresponding move with someone else.

CeeDee Lamb among 3 Cowboys added to COVID protocol ahead of next round of cuts

CeeDee Lamb, Malik Hooker, and Israel Mukuamu have been added to the team’s COVID/Reserve list, bringing the total number of names to five. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Three more names were added to the Cowboys’ COVID/Reserve list on Monday. That brings the total number to five after defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and defensive tackle Carlos Watkins were late COVID scratches in the lead-up to Saturday’s preseason game versus the Houston Texans. Both left AT&T Stadium before kickoff “out of an abundance of caution,” the team said.

News of the new additions came as head coach Mike McCarthy was wrapping up a Monday afternoon press conference in which he stated that three players would now be placed on the list.

Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, safety Malik Hooker, and rookie safety Israel Mukuamu will now enter COVID-19 protocol.

What happens next for each of the individuals on the list depends on the person’s vaccination status. According to Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News, Lamb is fully vaccinated. Watkins added in a subsequent tweet that Hooker has had one vaccination shot and was waiting for his second.

The news comes with six days to go before the team’s final preseason game, on Sunday against Jacksonville. Of significantly more concern is the Week 1 opener on September 9th. The situation bears a close watch as the club will work to ensure that all players are ready to suit up against the defending Super Bowl champs.

But the COVID news does add a wrinkle to the next round of roster cuts, due to the league office Tuesday afternoon.

The Cowboys had already moved to a virtual format on Sunday in response to Quinn and Watkins entering COVID protocol. As per Jori Epstein of USA Today, the team met virtually on Monday to watch game film from the Texans loss.
