Joe Joyce knocks out Carlos Takam in sixth round

Joe Joyce knocked out Carlos Takam in the sixth round to solidify his position as a prime heavyweight title contender Saturday in London.

Joe Joyce solidified his position as a next-in-line heavyweight title contender.

The 35-year-old Londoner stopped veteran Carlos Takam in the sixth round of a scheduled 12-rounder that was billed as a WBC title eliminator Saturday at SSE Arena in London.

Joyce (13-0, 12 KOs) already was the mandatory challenger for Anthony Joshua’s WBO title.

The 2016 silver medalist was coming off a break-through 10th-round stoppage of local rival Daniel Dubois this past November, which made him the WBO mandatory.

Takam (39-6-1, 28 KOs) had won four consecutive fights since back-to-back knockout losses against Joshua and Derek Chisora in 2017 and 2018 but he was no match for his taller, bigger and more-talented opponent on Saturday night.

The Cameroon-born Frenchman, 40, was competitive for much of the short fight. Joyce pushed the action but both fighters landed scoring punches for four-plus rounds.

Takam, perhaps tired, seemed to slow down somewhat in Round 5 but he continued to exchange punches with Joyce and hold his own.

Then came the punch that led to Takam’s demise. Joyce hurt him with a straight right seconds after the bell to begin Round 6 and followed with a barrage of hard, unanswered punches that lasted around 45 seconds.

Referee Steve Gray finally decided that Takam couldn’t defend himself and stopped the fight. The official time was 49 seconds into Round 6.

Joyce is now a prime candidate to challenge one of the winners of the Tyson Fury-Deontay Wilder (Oct. 9) and Joshua-Oleksandr Usyk (Sept. 25) fights for a share of the heavyweight championship.

After the fight, he made his preference clear: “What I want is AJ or Usyk!”

Joe Joyce: Daniel Dubois victory showed I can handle pressure

Joe Joyce said that his 10th-round knockout of Daniel Dubois showed that he is able to handle pressure.

Joe Joyce believes he is now a heavyweight contender as he prepares to fight Carlos Takam on Saturday.

Joyce had been expected to fight Oleksandr Usyk, but the failure of Anthony Joshua to make a fight with Tyson Fury upended the boxing schedule and left the 35-year-old Olympian with a task to find a new opponent.

He will now face Frenchman Carlos Takam, a fighter who had been put forward as a potential opponent for Fury last winter.

It was around the same time that Joyce had his most recent fight, a bruising encounter — for his opponent — against Daniel Dubois. Dubois was forced to concede the match in the 10th round after he could no longer take any more punishment to his eye socket from Joyce’s jab.

Joyce sees that win as a vital moment in his professional career.

“It was a turning point for me, where I went from an underdog to pretty much a fully fledged prospect,” Joyce told Boxing Scene. “It was a fight where everyone thought I was going to lose and even get knocked out in the first few rounds.

“I proved a lot of people wrong and won a lot of people money for Christmas.”

Joyce suggested that 23-year-old Dubois had been the fighter with the pressure on him, whereas Joyce’s experience stands him in good stead for any challenge.

“Yeah, it was less pressure and the heat was on Dubois,” he said. “I’ve been in a lot bigger fights, the Olympics for instance, with a lot of people watching me, so I am used to the pressure.

“I just get on with it and perform on the night.”

The 24-year-old product of Cleveland also has a solid amateur foundation — he reportedly was 85-15 in the unpaid ranks — and has power, as his record indicates. He last fought in November, when he stopped Juan De Angel in five rounds. Henderson, a 31-year-old from Arkansas, is also a boxer-puncher. He reportedly had 70 amateur fights and has a high KO percentage, including stoppages in his last two fights. Both principals will fighting in their first scheduled 10-rounder. They were scheduled to meet in October but Henderson pulled out of the fight because he was ill.

Tyson Fury likely to fight Kabayel or Takam on Dec. 5: report

Tyson Fury probably will fight one of two men on Dec. 5 in the U.K., according to his co-promoter Bob Arum.

Tyson Fury probably will fight one of two men on Dec. 5 in the U.K., according to his co-promoter Bob Arum.

Arum told BoxingScene.com that the heavyweight titleholder is likely to fight either contender Agit Kabayel or Carlos Takam, both of whom Arum also co-promotes.

“I’m not doing a bus boy,” said Arum, referring to prospective opponents for Fury. “Fury should beat Takam but Takam is at least known and he has been on ESPN. And he looked pretty good in the last fight.

“The other guy (Kabayel) is undefeated and he has fought some fairly decent guys. I haven’t come up with anybody else.”

Arum told the website that it’s clear whether ESPN will televise the event in the U.S.

“He’s deciding on an opponent,” Arum said. “I don’t know given the football schedule if we can do it on ESPN. But until I get an opponent I’m not going to ESPN [to discuss it].”

Fury (30-0-1, 21 KOs) is coming off a seventh-round knockout of Deontay Wilder in their rematch to win a heavyweight belt on Feb. 22.

Wilder exercised a rematch provision in their contract and a third fight between them was set for July. The fight was pushed back to October because of the coronavirus pandemic and surgery on Wilder’s biceps.

It was then pushed back to December. However, it became clear that the inability to reach a final deal and reported conflicts with college football on ESPN would cause another delay.

At that point, Fury said enough is enough and decided to move on, saying the rematch clause has expired. His plan is to fight countryman Anthony Joshua for all the heavyweight titles if he wins on Dec. 5 and Joshua gets past Kubrat Pulev on Dec. 12.

Kabayel (20-0, 13 KOs) is a 28-year-old former kickboxer from Germany who is ranked by three of the four major sanctioning bodies. He won the vacant European heavyweight title by outpointed Herve Hubeaux in 2017 and successfully defended three times, including a majority decision over longtime contender Derek Chisora.

Kabayel is 6-foot-3 (190.5 cm) and weighed 236¾ for his last fight. Fury is 6-9 and weighed 273 in his rematch with Wilder.

Takam (39-5-1, 28 KOs) is a 39-year-old Frenchman who has been a fringe contender. He has lost most of his biggest fight, including back-to-back knockouts against Joshua and Chisora in 2017 and 2018. He has won three in a row since the Chisora setback.

Nevada officials extend Jarrell Miller’s suspension indefinitely

Nevada officials have extend Jarrell Miller’s temporary suspension indefinitely for failing a drug test before a scheduled fight in July.

Jarrell Miller won’t be fighting in Nevada for a while.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission voted unanimously Wednesday to extend the heavyweight contender’s temporary suspension indefinitely for allegedly failing a drug test before a scheduled fight in July, BoxingScene.com reported.

Miller was scheduled to face Jerry Forrest on July 9 in the bubble at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, his first fight since a previous PED-related hiatus from boxing. However, he reportedly tested positive for GW1516. The substance, also known as cardarine and endurobol,  enhances aerobic power and endurance.

Miller insisted shortly after news broke of his positive test that he has never “willingly” taken a performance-enhancing drug.

GW1516 was one of three substances allegedly found in Miller’s system before his scheduled fight with Anthony Joshua last year in New York. He was replaced by Andy Ruiz Jr. as the opponent for Joshua, who was knocked out.

Miller was not yet licensed to fight in New York at the time he failed the test. Thus, New York officials didn’t have the power to suspend him. Miller had submitted all required paperwork Nevada authorities, which allowed them to take action against him.

They immediately issued a temporary suspension. On Wednesday, they extended it at their monthly commission meeting.

The 32-year-old from Brooklyn presumably would have to reapply for a license at some point if he hopes to fight in Nevada again. It’s not clear when he would be eligible to do so. Some have called for a lifetime ban.

Bob Bennett, the executive director of the NSAC, didn’t immediately return a phone call from Boxing Junkie.

Miller was fortunate to receive a second chance when he signed with Top Rank, which provided a nice platform on which to make his return. The July 9 card – with Carlos Takam replacing Miller – was televised on ESPN and ESPN Deportes.

A few days after the card, Bob Arum, CEO of Top Rank, said, “Jarrell Miller will never fight on a Top Rank card.”

Miller (23-0-1, 20 KOs) also tested positive for a banned substance when he was a kickboxer in 2014.

The 31-year-old from Brooklyn hasn’t fought since November 2018, when he stopped Bogdan Dinu.

Heavyweights Carlos Takam and Jerry Forrest to be featured Tuesday evening

Heavyweight Carlos Takam is scheduled to face Jerry Forrest in the 10-round main event Thursday in the MGM Grand bubble in Las Vegas.

The heavyweights will be featured for the first time in the Top Rank Boxing on ESPN summer series Thursday.

Longtime contender Carlos Takam of Cameroon is scheduled to face Jerry Forrest of Newport News, Virginia in the 10-round main event in the tightly controlled MGM Grand bubble in Las Vegas.

Forrest (26-3, 20 KOs) was originally scheduled to face Jarrell Miller in “Big Baby’s” comeback fight but Miller tested positive for a banned substance and was pulled from the card.

Takam (38-5-1, 28 KOs) has faced many big-name heavyweights but the 39-year-old, who built his career in France but now lives in Las Vegas, has generally come up short in his biggest fights. He has lost to Alexander Povetkin, Joseph Parker, Anthony Joshua (in a title fight) and Derek Chisora since 2014.

Heavyweights Carlos Takam (left) and Jerry Forrest will fight in the main event Thursday on ESPN. Mikey Williams / Top Rank

He hasn’t been in a notable fight since the Chisora bout, which was in July 2018. He has beaten three journeymen since then.

If nothing else, Takam seems to have been serious about his training. He weighed in Monday at 245.7, his lightest weight since the Joshua fight in October 2017. Forrest weighed 225.6.

Forrest (26-3, 20 KOs) is far removed from his biggest fights, losses to Gerald Washington and Michael Hunter in 2013 and 2014.

He won 18 consecutive fights against journeymen after the Hunter loss before losing a split decision to unbeaten Jermaine Franklin in July of last year. He bounced back to win his most recent fight, a second-round knockout of Martez Williamson in September.

Other fighters on the card weighed in as follows:

  • Carlos Castro (25-0, 10 KOs) 123.8 vs. Cesar Juarez (25-8, 19 KOs) 124.4, 10 rounds
  • Joshafat Ortiz (7-0, 4 KOs) 130.8 vs. Joshua Orta (6-0, 2 KOs) 132.7, six rounds
  • Fred Wilson Jr. (6-0-2, 2 KOs) 159 vs. Donte Stubbs (6-1, 2 KOs) 159.5, six rounds
  • Peter Cortez (2-1, 1 KO) 147.5 vs. Corey Champion (1-3, 1 KO) 147.6, four rounds
