Despite 2 DNPs, there is still optimism that Christian McCaffrey plays vs. Cardinals

McCaffrey has missed two straight days of practice with a quad injury.

The Carolina Panthers will host the Arizona Cardinals this weekend in Week 4. They aren’t sure if their best offensive player will be able to play.

Running back Christian McCaffrey missed his second straight day of practice with a thigh injury, putting his availability in doubt to face Arizona.

However, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, there is optimism he can play. McCaffrey is keeping things close to the vest but unless he has a setback with the injury, he should be able to play.

Cardinals defensive coordinator Vance Joseph expects him to play, calling him a “special player.”

Through three weeks this season, McCaffrey has 243 rushing yards and a touchdown, averaging 4.9 yards per attempt.

Against the Cardinals last season, McCaffrey had 95 rushing yards and another 66 receiving yards on 10 receptions.

CB Trayvon Mullen expected to see first defensive snaps of season

So far this season after being traded to the Cardinals, he has been inactive twice and used on special teams once.

The Arizona Cardinals are finally ready to use cornerback Trayon Mullen on defense.

Through the first three weeks of the season, Mullen has been inactive twice and then played only on special teams.

That will change in Week 4 as the Cardinals prepare for the Carolina Panthers.

Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph told reporters after practice that Mullen would “absolutely” get defensive snaps this week.

Mullen was acquired via trade before the season from the Las Vegas Raiders for a conditional seventh-round draft pick. He had an injured toe when he arrived and had not been with the team in camp, so he had to get healthy and did not practice for the first time until two weeks ago.

At 6-2 and 200 lbs, he will add length to the defensive backfield. Byron Murphy has played well. Marco Wilson had a great game last week. Jace Whittaker played a lot last week but struggled. The Cardinals have used three standard elevations on Whittaker this season already to bring him up from the practice squad. Those have been used up.

Now is the time for Mullen, at least until Antonio Hamilton returns, which is probably at least a couple of weeks away.

Kyler Murray to face former teammate Baker Mayfield for the third time

Kyler Murray and Baker Mayfield will meet for the third time when the Cardinals travel to Charlotte to take on the Panthers this Sunday.

Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals have a crucial game ahead of them this Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.

The Panthers’ starting quarterback, of course, is Baker Mayfield. Mayfield and Murray were teammates at Oklahoma, both won the Heisman Trophy and both were drafted No. 1 overall.

Murray and the Cards played Mayfield twice when was with the Cleveland Browns. Both times, the Cards defense had their way with Baker and Murray got the bragging rights, winning both games.

In their first meeting, Murray was a rookie in 2019 nearing the end of his first season. Mayfield and the Browns were not mathematically eliminated from the playoffs but weren’t going to make it that year.

This game was in Arizona and the Cards won 38-24. The highlight of this game was former Cardinal Kenyan Drake’s four rushing touchdown performance that crushed any remaining playoff hopes the Browns had.

Murray and Mayfield both had solid outings, but Murray was more efficient on the day moving the ball.

The second time these two teams met was last season. The Cardinals were struck with a COVID bug and were missing Kliff Kingsbury and Chandler Jones. Kyler Murray put on a clinic with four passing touchdowns and the Cards won 37-14.

Mayfield had a hail mary at the end of the half but was injured late in the game on a sack by J.J. Watt. The Cardinals were in full control of the game by the fourth quarter.

While the Panthers have certainly had the Cardinals’ number, having not lost to them since 2013, the Cards have had plenty of success against Mayfield. Something’s got to give.

CB Antonio Hamilton unlikely to return from NFI in Week 5

Arizona Cardinals cornerback Antonio Hamilton is progressing well in his rehab, but it doesn’t sound like he’ll be ready for next Sunday’s matchup against the Eagles.

The Arizona Cardinals had a freak accident in the cornerback room when projected starter Antonio Hamilton suffered serious burns in a cooking incident.

Hamilton fortunately avoided any major long-term health complications but was placed on the NFI, putting him out at least the first four games of the season.

Following Sunday’s game with the Carolina Panthers, Hamilton is technically eligible to return by rule. However, Kliff Kingsbury didn’t sound overly optimistic that he would be available for Week 5’s contest with the Philadelphia Eagles.

“He’s moving around good,” he said Wednesday after practice. “Next week maybe a little aggressive, but we’re hopeful. I think we’ve got to get him out there to see what he’s retained as far as the football stuff, see how he moves around and make sure he is comfortable, but he looks good in his in his rehab.”

Hamilton posted videos on social media of him going through defensive back drills and looked to be in good shape. The Cardinals could use Hamilton back on the field sooner rather than later, as he was the projected No. 2 cornerback before his injury.

Having Hamilton in the fold allows the Cardinals to move Byron Murphy around in the slot and feel comfortable with their two outside corners in Hamilton and Marco Wilson.

The Cardinals could be looking at serious reinforcements in the following weeks with the return of DeAndre Hopkins, Rondale Moore and Hamilton.

A.J. Green unlikely to play Sunday for Cardinals vs. Panthers

Cardinals WR A.J. Green is expected to miss Sunday’s game with the Panthers with a bone bruise injury suffered in Week 3’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

It has not been the season A.J. Green or the Arizona Cardinals had hoped for when he re-signed a one-year deal with the team following an 800-plus yard season.

In three games played, Green has five receptions for 29 yards. Now, he’s dealing with a bone bruise that is expected to keep him out of Week 4’s crucial matchup with the Carolina Panthers.

When asked about Green’s availability, Kliff Kingsbury had the following to say:

“It looks doubtful unless he really, really comes around he’s probably not going to be available.”

The Cardinals have a size issue at the receiver position, assuming Green does miss Sunday’s contest. The team currently does not have a receiver over 5-9 on the active roster.

More than that, however, is the lack of depth at the receiver position, as the team continues to be without DeAndre Hopkins. Second-year Rondale Moore, however, is progressing the right way, as he was limited in practice Wednesday.

There is currently no time set on Green’s return from injury.

Cardinals hoping to get WR Rondale Moore back for some role vs. Panthers

Moore has not yet played this season with a pulled hamstring. He was limited in practice on Wednesday.

The Arizona Cardinals enter Week 4 with not many healthy or available players at wide receiver. DeAndre Hopkins is suspended for three more games, Antoine Wesley is on injured reserve, A.J. Green has an injured knee and Rondale Moore hasn’t played yet this season with a hamstring injury.

Moore was officially limited on the first injury report of the week and was seen by reporters during the open part of practice Wednesday.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury is not sure Moore will be fully healthy but there is the hope that he will be able to offer something this weekend against the Carolina Panthers.

“(Moore) was limited some, but it was good to have him back out there,” Kingsbury told reporters after practice. “Hopefully he progresses to the point we can get something out of him Sunday. I don’t know to what extent yet.”

With Green likely missing the game, Kingsbury already said on Sunday after their 20-12 loss to the Los Angeles Rams that they would not push Moore back too quickly just because Green is out. They want him healthy enough to play and want to be smart.

The Cardinals have two days left of practice to try and figure things out with Moore and their other injured players.
