Cardinals-Rams Week 3 preview with Lions Wire

Jeff Risdon joins Jess Root on the podcast to preview Cardinals-Lions.

The Arizona Cardinals’ Week 3 opponent at State Farm Stadium Sunday afternoon are the 1-1 Detroit Lions, who are favored to win the game.

Both teams are 1-1 and both teams’ wins came against the L.A. Rams.

To preview the game, Lions Wire managing editor Jeff Risdon joined me on the latest edition of the podcast.

We discuss how the Lions have looked so far. We pointed out the emergence of receiver Jameson Williams and how quarterback Jared Goff has not been as good this year so far. They talk about the dominance of defensive end Aidan Hutchinson and more.

We also talk about some key matchups in the game and make game predictions. Both he and I predict a Lions win.

Cardinals have not beaten Lions in nearly a decade

The last time the Cardinals beat the Lions was in 2015.

The Arizona Cardinals face the Detroit Lions on Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Week 3. While there was a time that the Cardinals dominated the Lions, that has not been the case in recent seasons.

From 2006-2015, the Cardinals won seven straight games against the Lions.

They haven’t beaten them since then.

The Lions are 4-0-1 in the last 5 meetings. Quarterback Kyler Murray has not beaten the Lions yet in his career. The closest he came was his NFL debut, when he rallied the Cardinals from 18 points down to finish in a tie.

The Lions lead the all-time series 35-28-6 in a rivalry that dates back to 1930.

The last time the two teams played, the Lions beat Arizona 30-12 in 2021 behind three Jared Goff TD passes.

Lions injury report: WR Amon-Ra St. Brown has quad injury

A look at the Lions’ first injury report of Week 3 as they prepare to play the Cardinals.

The Detroit Lions’ Wednesday injury report leading to Sunday’s Week 3 game against the Cardinals includes five starters with three on defense, including linebacker Alex Anzalone, who is concussion protocol, and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, who has a quad injury.

The full details are below.

Detroit Lions Week 3 Wednesday injury report

Did not participate

LB Alex Anzalone (concussion)

CB Terrion Arnold (illness)

G Graham Glasgow (knee)

S Ifeatu Melifonwu (ankle)

CB Ennis Rakestraw (hamstring)

Anzalone suffered the injury against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sunday and ended up playing 40 snaps (83 percent) after participating in all 78 in the overtime game the week before against the Los Angeles Rams. He had 13 tackles (10 solo) in that game, but only four (three solo) against the Bucs. He also wears the green dot on his helmet and relays the defensive calls.

Glasgow, the starter at right guard, played all 85 snaps against Tampa Bay. Arnold played 44 snaps (92 percent). Melifonwu and Rakestraw were inactive with the latter suffering a hamstring injury in pregame warmups.

Limited participation

S Kerby Joseph (back)

WR Isaiah Williams (abdomen)

Joseph is a starter and played all 48 snaps against Tampa Bay, while Williams was inactive.

Full participation

DE Marcus Davenport (groin)

WR Amon-Ra St. Brown (quadriceps)

St. Brown was treated twice on the field by trainers against the Bucs, but still had 11 catches for 119 yards on 18 targets. Davenport was inactive.

Cardinals injury report: Dante Stills, Will Hernandez are new additions

The Cardinals had a pair of new injuries pop up in the first injury report of Week 3.

The Arizona Cardinals’ Wednesday injury report leading to Sunday’s game in Week 3 against the Detroit Lions has new two names listed: right guard Will Hernandez and defensive lineman Dante Stills.

Rookie wide receiver Xavier Weaver also remains on the report. The full details are below.

Arizona Cardinals Week 3 Wednesday injury report

Limited participation

DL Dante Stills (shoulder)

Stills was inactive for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams and when head coach Jonathan Gannon was asked Monday about that decision, he said, “I just felt like who we put up was the best way to defend them.”

The question is when Stills was injured. It’s likely he got banged up at some point during practice Wednesday and that affected the remainder of his reps.

Full participation

G Will Hernandez (ankle)

WR Xavier Weaver (oblique)

It’s probable that Hernandez received treatment on his ankle from a possible issue from the game against the Rams, but as a starter it didn’t affect any of his reps in practice.

Weaver was limited all last week and was inactive for the second consecutive week. If he has no additional issues, there likely won’t be a presence on the report next week.

Lions’ Jared Goff hasn’t lost to Cardinals since rookie season

Goff is 8-0 since 2017 against Arizona with 14 touchdowns passes and three rushing touchdowns.

The Arizona Cardinals’ Week 3 opponents are the Detroit Lions, whom they face at home this Sunday. They are led by quarterback Jared Goff.

Goff has had the Cardinals’ number for years.

He is 8-1 against them and has won eight straight games against them.

The Cardinals have not beaten Goff since his rookie season in 2016. In that game, they beat the L.A. Rams 44-6 and sacked Goff seven times.

Since then, he is 8-0 with 14 touchdown passes and three interceptions. He has rushed for three touchdowns as well. In those eight games, he has been sacked 11 times.

Seven of those starts came while he was with the Rams.

In his one start for the Lions against the Cardinals, it was a 30-12 win in 2021. He completed 21-of-26 passes for 216 yards and three touchdowns.

The Cardinals have not beaten Goff since 2016. They have not beaten the Lions since 2015.

They got a 10-year monkey off their back with their first home win over the Rams on Sunday in a decade. Can they finally best Goff this weekend?

Cardinals bring in 2 RBs, 2 TEs for tryouts Tuesday

The Cardinals brought in a former Lions running back for a tryout and others on Tuesday.

There were 44 tryouts and three visits reported by NFL teams Tuesday, the day with normally the most tryouts, and the Arizona Cardinals had four with two running backs (Zonovan Knight and Isaiah Spiller) and two tight ends (Teagan Quitoriano and Joel Wilson).

Here are the backgrounds on all four players.

RB Zonovan Knight

Lon Horwedel-USA TODAY Sports

Knight (5-11, 209) attended North Carolina State and was signed by the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent in 2022. In his high-school career at Southern Nash in Bailey, N.C., he rushed for 5,073 yards with 71 touchdowns.

In 2022, he was signed to the practice squad after being waived in the cutdown to 53 players and was signed to the active roster on Oct. 25. He played seven games with four starts and rushed for 300 yards on 85 carries with one touchdown.

In 2023, he was cut by the Jets in the reduction to 53, was signed by the Detroit Lions for their practice squad and then signed to the roster on Sept. 20. After playing two games, he was placed on injured reserve with a torn labrum on Oct. 14, where he remained for the rest of the season. This year, he was waived on Aug. 27.

RB Isaiah Spiller

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Spiller (6-1, 215) attended Texas A&M and was a fourth-round pick by the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022 and played 15 games in two seasons, totaling 137 yards on 55 carries. This year, he was waived on Aug. 27, signed to the Chargers practice squad on Aug. 28 and then released Sept. 2. In three seasons at Texas A&M, he rushed for 946 yards, 1,036 and 1,011.

TE Teagan Quitoriano

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Quitoriano (6-6, 259) attended Oregon State and was a fifth-round pick of the Houston Texans in 2022. He began that season on injured reserve because of a knee injury and was activated Nov. 3 after which he played nine games with six starts and caught seven passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Last season, he played seven games with five starts before being placed on injured reserve on Oct. 31 (groin/oblique) for the remainder of the season. He had only two receptions for 33 yards in those seven games.

This season, he was waived/injured (calf) on Aug. 27, reverted to injured reserve the next day and was waived with an injury settlement Sept. 4.

TE Joel Wilson

Tork Mason/USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin

Wilson (6-4, 242) attended Central Michigan and was an undrafted free agent with the Buffalo Bills in 2023. He was waived on Aug. 29 and signed to the Bills practice squad the next day. He was released on Nov. 7 and was signed to the Green Bay Packers on Nov. 28 for the remainder of the season. After signing a futures contract this year with the Packers on Jan. 22, he was waived on Aug. 27.

Cardinals sign safety to practice squad

After trying out Friday, the Cardinals added S Jason Taylor II to the practice squad.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a practice squad move on Tuesday. After bringing him in for a workout on Friday, they signed safety Jason Taylor II to the practice squad and made room for him by releasing offensive lineman Marquis Hayes.

Taylor is not related to the Hall of Fame pass rusher. He played collegiately at Oklahoma State and was a seventh-round pick of the L.A. Rams in 2023. He was first-team All-Big 12 in 2022.

The six-foot, 204-pound safety was on injured reserve for a part of last season and played eight games, participating in 39 snaps on defense and 111 on special teams.

This year, he was waived by the Rams in the cutdown to 53 players and signed to the practice squad the following day. However, he was released from the practice squad last week.

Taylor is the only safety on the practice squad.
